What's cooking with Perhebat: Sewing and brewing as soldiers return to civilian life
KLUANG: With her military career 'sewn up' including a stint with the Malaysian Battalion Team (Malbatt) in Lebanon, this tough lady wishes to exchange the gun for needle-and-thread thus continuing the legacy of her seamstress-mother once she returns to civilian life. Senior Warrant Officer (Rtd) P. Maygala, 41, who served in the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) until her retirement last year (2024), said her feminine intuition persuaded her to study business management as a second career in the Transition Training programme, organised by the Ex-Servicemen Affairs Corporation (Perhebat). 'Many people ask me why tailoring and not other fields such as security ... my answer is simply that I am a woman, a mother, so the feminine spirit prevails despite the military discipline. Even before joining the army, I helped my mother at her tailoring shop,' she told Bernama after the Perhebat Certificate presentation here today by Commander of the RMN Reserve Force, First Admiral Azhar Adam. Maygala, who has served for 21 years including joining the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force, thanked the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and Perhebat. 'Having just graduated and receiving the certificate today, I will join my mother's clothing business in Johor Bahru by the end of the year,' she said. Another Perhebat graduate, Corporal (Rtd) Helmi Mohd Balawi, 43, said he would open a coffee-based cafe armed with the knowledge he gained from Perhebat 'sTransition Training. With his simmering interest in coffee, he wants to have a meaningful life while generating income after retirement. 'I served in the Johor Military Force (JMF) for 26 years, so I have no other skills. That's why I joined the Perhebat's Transition Training so that I can adapt to civilian life,' he said. Meanwhile, First Admiral Azhar said the MAF and Perhebat would increase their cooperation with the private sector to provide more job opportunities. According to him, eight new memorandums of understanding and agreements have been signed by the MAF in 2025 to support human capital development of MAF retirees and veterans to explore new fields. 'Besides teaching business to produce entrepreneurs, we are shifting our focus to the field of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of military assets with specialised training. 'This Transition Training has churned out a total of 3,473 MAF retirees while five JMF retirees have received certificates. A total of 514 personnel and veterans have also been awarded the Malaysian Skills Diploma,' Azhar added.

J'khand will produce surplus milk in 5 to 7 years: Hemant
Ranchi: Jharkhand would soon be able to produce surplus milk and sell it outside the state, chief minister Hemant Soren said while inaugurating the the state's first milk powder generation plant on the Medha Diary premises at Hotwar here. Inaugurating the plant jointly with Hemant, state agriculture, dairy and animal husbandry department minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey also said the new plant would mean a new chapter in Jharkhand's 'White Revolution' making its dependence on Assam and Chhattisgarh for converting excess milk into milk powder end. T he powder plant will have a capacity of 20 MT per day and will be constructed at a total cost of Rs 80 crore. Hemant also laid the foundation for a silage plant in Nagri, Ranchi, which will use leftover fruit and vegetable residues from the Mother Dairy complex to produce feeds for animals. It will not only provide an additional source of income for the state's farmers but also serve as a nutritious option for animals throughout the year. Additionally, the CM unveiled the 'Medha Ragi Laddu', organic fertilizer 'Medha Sudhan', and a distributor app developed by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) on the occasion. Addressing a function on the occasion attended by 2,000 dairy farmers, Hemant said Medha dairy is among the priority sectors of the govt to augment farmers' income, and put the state on the development map. "The way we are progressing, our state will not just be able to become self-sufficient in the next five to seven years, but will also be in a position to become a surplus milk-producing state." He appealed to the farmers to help protect the environment. The chief minister further said, "Commercial agriculture is the need of the hour. Special attention must be given to increasing the value addition of agricultural products. Our govt is supporting farmers through various means." On a lighter note, Hemant said, "If cricketing icon M S Dhoni can do farming, why can't others?" He also said, "Despite all challenges, our govt is making continuous efforts to promote agriculture and animal husbandry. We are taking concrete steps to make the state self-sufficient in the production of milk, fish and meat among others. The govt is preparing a work plan to enhance milk collection activities." Agriculture minister Tirkey added, "Today marks a special day for Jharkhand as a new chapter in the field of the White Revolution began. Until now, the state had to rely on states like Assam and Chhattisgarh to convert excess milk into milk powder. Now, the milk collected at the Medha plant complex can be easily converted into milk powder." A year after the formation of the state, the Jharkhand Cooperative Milk Federation Limited (JMF), tied with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to boost milk production. In the last decade, JMF strengthened its milk collection, processing and marketing system by establishing state-of-the-art dairy plants with a capacity of 1,00,000 litres per day in Ranchi, and 50,000 litres per day each in Sarath (Deoghar), Sahebganj, and Palamu. Drilling leadership into Johor youth
Mohd Hairi: JYP to involve youngsters from public and private higher education institutions, youth associations and young professionals from various industries. JOHOR government together with the Johor Military Force (JMF) will hold a leadership training programme for 200 youths this year. State youth, sports, entrepreneur development and cooperative committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said the programme called 'Johor Youth Patriot' (JYP) was similar to that of Johor Volunteer Force (JVF). Mohd Hairi said that as the volunteer force's constitution stated that it was only for Johor civil servants, there were no plans to open the organisation to the public. 'However, one of the six main pillars of the 'Maju Johor 2030' agenda is a special focus on youth,' he said. 'The aim is to develop the young generation through 49 strategic initiatives encompassing education, leadership, entrepreneurship, sports and patriotism. 'Among key initiatives is JYP, inspired by the volunteer force and run by Dato' Onn Institute.' Mohd Hairi said the youth patriot programme would train Johor's youngsters in leadership. 'Using a military-based approach, JYP aims to instil discipline, resilience and patriotism. 'The training will be delivered by experienced JMF instructors,' he said. He added that each session would be structured to ensure participants could apply the skills they learn in a practical setting. JYP's target groups, Mohd Hairi said, were youths from public and private higher education institutions, youth associations and young professionals from various industries. The programme will be held over 11 days at Savanna Hill Resort in Ulu Tiram from end August until mid-September, during local college and university semester breaks. 'Those who complete the programme will receive a special certificate,' he said. Earlier, Mohd Hairi explained, 'JVF was founded in 1905 by Almarhum Sultan Sir Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar to train Malay Johor civil servants through military training. 'This was aimed at ensuring civil servants were highly disciplined and efficient in their duties.' JVF is registered with Registrar of Societies Malaysia under Section 7 of Societies Act 1966. Mohd Hairi said this in his reply to Nazri Abdul Rahman (PH-Simpang Jeram) on whether the government had plans to extend JVF to youths. The query was raised during the state assembly sitting at Bangunan Sultan Ismail, Kota Iskandar. In his reply, Mohd Hairi said on March 24, 2021, Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar had decreed the revival of the volunteer force to improve fitness and discipline among government officers. JVF then began to train Johor administrative officers in discipline, survival skills, physical fitness, and basic military knowledge. The training was held together with JMF and later extended to state civil servants. 'The state government began the JVF programme with a course that ran from July 17 to 31, 2022,' he said, adding that the course involved 29 state administrative officers from the 2019 and 2022 hiring intakes. 'The course was designed to produce quality officers with leadership capabilities.' Mohd Hairi announced that this year's JVF programme held with the Civil Defence Force would include emergency and disaster management. 'Training for soft skills would be held from June 9 to 13 at the Southern Region Civil Defence Training Centre in Kluang.' Trainers, he added, would have completed the JMF self-identity and physical fitness enhancement course.
