F1 first reviews out: Brad Pitt's film gets 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics celebrate its ‘high speed splendour'
The anticipation around Brad Pitt's upcoming sports drama F1 is on the rise as Rotten Tomatoes has finally given its verdict on the film. While the rating is expected to go up, the current 'tomatometer' score sits at 85%. Pitt's last tango as an actor was alongside George Clooney in the film Wolves, which received an underwhelming rating of 67%. F1 meanwhile, received positive reviews during its first official press screening, as critics deemed it a 'high-octane crowd-pleaser' and even compared it to Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick.
Both Top Gun: Maverick and F1 have several similarities, the biggest being director Joseph Kosinski, who helmed both the projects. Both films contain high-speed and potentially dangerous stunts, while also sharing the veteran and rookie trope. Kosinski will hope to match Top Gun's impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 96% and the 'popcornmeter' (reviews by fans) score of 99% with F1. Movie critic Jake Coyle of the Associated Press wrote, 'A fine-tuned machine of a movie that, in its most riveting racing scenes, approaches a kind of high-speed splendour,' while Sophie Butcher of Empire Magazine congratulated the director and said, 'Joseph Kosinski has done it again.' It seems that with the great first reviews and the expansive press tour Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem are on right now, the sky is the limit for the film as it moves towards the start of its theatrical run. Bardem went on The Tonight Show and told Jimmy Fallon how Brad Pitt was multitasking his way through the entire film, as he 'drove the F1 cars at 180 mph', while acting and producing. He also complimented him on his attitude on set and said, 'He had to deal with so many things, and he always made sure that he was taking care of everyone else and was giving all the actors their time to shine and would take a backseat.'
Pitt plays the character of Sonny Hayes, a driver who was once considered a great prospect but never quite lived up to his potential. He is brought back to the world of Formula One by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), who is now the team principal of a struggling crew. Cervates pairs him with rookie driver Joshua Pierce, played by Damson Idris, and expects Sonny to mentor him so that the two of them can pull the team out of the ditch.
Directed by Kosinski, F1 hits the theatres on June 25. The cast of the film includes Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Lewis Hamilton, and Simone Ashley. Other F1 drivers like Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will also be seen going wheel to wheel with Pitt and Idris. Pitt's highest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes as an actor is 12 Years a Slave (2013) with a rating of 95%, followed closely by Moneyball (2011) with 94%.
