Edinburgh dog attack horror as boy rushed to hospital after being mauled at park

A Scots mum was left shaken after her son was allegedly attacked by a dog at a busy local park.
Nine-year-old Nicholas Quintero suffered injuries to his face after the horror incident while he and his family attended a surprise birthday party at Leith Links on Thursday night, reports Edinburgh Live.
Nick's mum Maria Cedeno recalled singing happy birthday to a friend before she heard screams and turned round to find blood gushing from her son's face after the dog supposedly lunged at him.
According to Maria, Nick pointed to a Bulldog-type dog as she removed him from the park and called an ambulance. Medics arrived and police were later alerted to the incident.
However, Maria claims the owners of the dog attempted to mask the incident from police and initially denied any wrongdoing. Nick was rushed to hospital and returned on Friday morning, June 20, for surgery due to the severity of his facial injuries.

Maria is now furious following the ordeal and the handling of the incident by the owners of the dog. She claims they are yet to apologise or take any accountability for the attack which has left her son "traumatised."
When approached for comment Police Scotland confirmed a child was taken to hospital after being jumped at by a dog. However, images taken by Maria appear to show a bite mark on her son's body.
Speaking to Edinburgh Live Maria, from Saughton, said: "I took the children to a gathering for a surprise party and it was supposed to be a fun day out and water gun fight.
"The children were getting ready and everyone started singing happy birthday but all of a sudden I hear Nicholas shouting and screaming. My son's friends and him say all he did was pet the dog, there was no trigger for it to react like that.
"The owners tried to tell the police there was balloons but there was none at all. When I saw all the blood I thought he had a nose bleed as it just wouldn't stop but he was covering his face and pointing to the dog.
"My reaction was I have to take him out of the park and phone an ambulance. The ambulance crew phoned the police and the dog was suddenly gone. It took 30 or 40 minutes for them to admit it was their dog.
"We're now in hospital as he needs surgery. He has a cut at his mouth which is properly open and can't be stitched. I'm thankful the dog couldn't properly get a hold of him or he could have lost half his face."
Pictures shared by Maria show the severity of the injury sustained in the attack as he was left with a huge cut on his face pouring with blood.
Maria stated that the incident has already had a significant impact on her son as he was spooked by the family's own dog when he returned home on Thursday.
The attack was also witnessed by Maria's other son, who is 11-years-old, and a friend of his. Police have since confirmed the matter has been passed to the dog warden.
Maria added: "It is all wrong and I want to make people cautious. I also want the owners to take accountability and responsibility as there hasn't even been an apology or a message to ask if they can help.
"Two more children have been left in shock by this as his older brother and his friend were there. As owners we have to take accountability and if this was the other way around I'd be calling an ambulance and helping in any way, but there was no help."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 6.45pm on Thursday, 19 June, 2025, officers received a report of a dog having jumped at a child in the Links Place area of Edinburgh.
'The child was taken to hospital for treatment. The matter has been passed to the dog warden.'
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: 'We received a call at 18:32 on Thursday 19 June to attend an incident on Salamander Place, Edinburgh. We dispatched one ambulance to the scene and transported one patient to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.'

A popular Netflix star has been killed in a horror hit-and-run, which sparked a large-scale manhunt to find the driver. Online attacks on MSPs cross the line of decent debate as hate almost triples
Even if we disagree fundamentally with some of our MSPs' political positions, they deserve to be safe at work, Record View says. The number of abusive social media posts directed towards MSPs has almost tripled in the past year. According to research, MSPs have been on the receiving end of 23,500 abusive posts – an increase from 8000 the 12 months before. No matter your views on the performance of our politicans, this is unacceptable. While robust debate should always be welcomed – and our MSPs should expect a fair amount of anger from constituents – this onslaught of online hate must end. Even if we disagree fundamentally with some of our MSPs ' political positions, they deserve to be safe at work. But it makes it almost impossible for them to engage with voters when they are on the receiving end of so much online abuse. Some will argue MSPs should just get on with it and these hateful messages are nothing more than keyboard warriors letting off steam. But we all know nasty bile poured out online can seep into the real world. We saw the worst of this in 2016, when Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered just a week before the Brexit referendum. If we want politics to make our lives better and spark real change, then we need to engage with ideas and real debate. We should disagree with our politicians. We should argue with them. We can think outside the box and put forward radical ideas. But the minute we start to abuse, threaten and hate those we disagree with, a line has been crossed. There is no excuse for it and those who engage in such tactics deserve nothing but disdain. Slain Ross Monaghan's DNA was found on gun used to shoot 'Gerbil' at Asda car park reveals ex-cop
The former cop claims that new DNA evidence linking Monaghan to the murder weapon emerged after he was cleared. Murdered gangster Ross Monaghan was cleared of killing rival Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll due to a forensics blunder, according to a top cop who worked on the case. The Gerbil was shot dead in an Asda car park in 2010 but rival gangster Monaghan was cleared of the killing two years later after a judge ruled there was not enough evidence. Another man, William 'Buff' Paterson, was later convicted of the notorious murder. Now a retired detective has revealed to the Daily Record that new DNA evidence linking Monaghan to the murder weapon emerged AFTER he was cleared. Monaghan himself was shot dead alongside pal Eddie Lyons jnr in a double execution in the Costa Del Sol last month. The retired cop said fresh DNA on the inner workings of the gun used to kill Gerbil proved Monaghan was one of the two shooters. He said: 'There is no escaping his DNA was on that gun. There is no escaping there was firearms discharge residue on his jacket. 'There is no escaping that a re-investigation found DNA on the inner workings of that gun. Ross Monaghan was responsible for shooting the Gerbil, along with Billy Paterson. One-hundred per cent.' The former policeman said a review of the case was carried out after Monaghan's acquittal and that other evidence came to light which made it clear he was involved in the hit. He said: 'They did find extra DNA on the gun. And it was on the internal workings of the gun in a position that would have absolutely negated any casual touch of the gun.' He also spoke of his anguish at a 'shocker' of a lab mistake that could have nailed Monaghan for the murder. Monaghan's DNA had been found on the handle of one of the guns, but the evidence was undermined when a lab technician's DNA was also found in the sample. The cop said: 'I was hugely disappointed and felt really let down by the mistakes made. 'We didn't know the DNA had been compromised by the lab worker until the trial. I don't know why we had no knowledge of that.' The ex-detective – one of the first officers at the crime scene in Glasgow's Robroyston – said of the mistake: 'That was a shocker because that was the mainstay of the evidence. Everybody was absolutely crestfallen by it.' He claimed evidence was not protected properly, saying: 'Somehow, somebody who shouldn't have been near that gun was allowed to handle it and left their DNA on it. No one has ever explained that satisfactorily.' He blasted: 'The police investigation was very thorough. The cops were let down by a blunder, that blunder made Scotland's streets much more unsafe than they ought to have been for another decade-and-a-half.' Monaghan and Lyons jnr – kingpings in the Lyons crime gang – were gunned down in a bar owned by Monaghan in the Costa Del Sol on May 31. Spanish police believe the executions are part of a bloody gangland feud with the rival Daniel crime clan that has spanned more than 25 years. The former cop does not know why another prosecution did not take place against Monaghan. Scots law allows for retrials in cases where new evidence emerges. His 'theory' is the Crown believed the DNA evidence was something that should have been found during the 'initial examination of the firearm'. He added: 'My understanding is it has to be something that wasn't available to the Crown at the time of the original prosecution.' In 2015, Lyons associate Paterson was found guilty of being one of the two masked gunmen who murdered Carroll. The retired cop added: 'We did incredible work. The Billy Paterson conviction proves that, but on Ross Monaghan we were let down severely.' The former cop, who we are not naming for his own safety, said Monaghan's acquittal 'undoubtedly' prolonged the gangland bloodshed. He said: 'In terms of the live criminal group, Ross Monaghan was central to the violence part of it. Billy Paterson and him were the ones most physically capable of violence. To leave one of them loose after that, of course there was other violence.' He said of the double murder of Monaghan and Lyons jnr in Spain: 'It was audacious but I didn't think it was surprising, given everything that has been going on in Scotland and beyond which, to me, was obviously an extension of the Lyons/Daniel feud. 'When you look at what's happened to all of that crowd, they are all either in the jail or dead. One by one, they have all been picked off.' He added: 'It's the most elongated and intense violence between two gangs I have ever heard of. I have never seen anything like it. It is unprecedented and it carries on to this day.' The Crown Office said: 'Prosecutors work closely with police to explore any evidential developments which would allow us to bring unresolved homicide cases to court. We do not confirm if an individual is, or has been, under investigation through that process.' The Scottish Police Authority said: ' SPA Forensic Services uses cutting edge DNA scientific techniques which are accredited to international quality standards and assessed annually.'
