Edinburgh dog attack horror as boy rushed to hospital after being mauled at park
GRAPHIC IMAGE WARNING: Maria was celebrating a friend's birthday with her son when he was allegedly attacked by a dog. A Scots mum was left shaken after her son was allegedly attacked by a dog at a busy local park. Nine-year-old Nicholas Quintero suffered injuries to his face after the horror incident while he and his family attended a surprise birthday party at Leith Links on Thursday night, reports Edinburgh Live. Nick's mum Maria Cedeno recalled singing happy birthday to a friend before she heard screams and turned round to find blood gushing from her son's face after the dog supposedly lunged at him. According to Maria, Nick pointed to a Bulldog-type dog as she removed him from the park and called an ambulance. Medics arrived and police were later alerted to the incident. However, Maria claims the owners of the dog attempted to mask the incident from police and initially denied any wrongdoing. Nick was rushed to hospital and returned on Friday morning, June 20, for surgery due to the severity of his facial injuries. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Maria is now furious following the ordeal and the handling of the incident by the owners of the dog. She claims they are yet to apologise or take any accountability for the attack which has left her son "traumatised." When approached for comment Police Scotland confirmed a child was taken to hospital after being jumped at by a dog. However, images taken by Maria appear to show a bite mark on her son's body. Speaking to Edinburgh Live Maria, from Saughton, said: "I took the children to a gathering for a surprise party and it was supposed to be a fun day out and water gun fight. "The children were getting ready and everyone started singing happy birthday but all of a sudden I hear Nicholas shouting and screaming. My son's friends and him say all he did was pet the dog, there was no trigger for it to react like that. "The owners tried to tell the police there was balloons but there was none at all. When I saw all the blood I thought he had a nose bleed as it just wouldn't stop but he was covering his face and pointing to the dog. "My reaction was I have to take him out of the park and phone an ambulance. The ambulance crew phoned the police and the dog was suddenly gone. It took 30 or 40 minutes for them to admit it was their dog. "We're now in hospital as he needs surgery. He has a cut at his mouth which is properly open and can't be stitched. I'm thankful the dog couldn't properly get a hold of him or he could have lost half his face." Pictures shared by Maria show the severity of the injury sustained in the attack as he was left with a huge cut on his face pouring with blood. Maria stated that the incident has already had a significant impact on her son as he was spooked by the family's own dog when he returned home on Thursday. The attack was also witnessed by Maria's other son, who is 11-years-old, and a friend of his. Police have since confirmed the matter has been passed to the dog warden. Maria added: "It is all wrong and I want to make people cautious. I also want the owners to take accountability and responsibility as there hasn't even been an apology or a message to ask if they can help. "Two more children have been left in shock by this as his older brother and his friend were there. As owners we have to take accountability and if this was the other way around I'd be calling an ambulance and helping in any way, but there was no help." A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 6.45pm on Thursday, 19 June, 2025, officers received a report of a dog having jumped at a child in the Links Place area of Edinburgh. 'The child was taken to hospital for treatment. The matter has been passed to the dog warden.' A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: 'We received a call at 18:32 on Thursday 19 June to attend an incident on Salamander Place, Edinburgh. We dispatched one ambulance to the scene and transported one patient to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.'

‘Simple' fan hack will cool you down faster and better — and save your wallet, energy expert says
Summer is almost in full swing, and with that comes uncomfortable scorching temps and often high electric bills, thanks to the constant run of air conditioning. NYC is gearing up for its first heat wave of the season, with forecasters predicting temperatures to reach a high of 100 degrees next week. This hack can help keep you cool and comfortable during the hot summer months. Maria – Thankfully, there is an expert-backed trick that can solve New Yorkers' sweltering problems. To save yourself and your wallet — an expert recommends utilizing a fan in a specific way to keep the temps inside your home nice and cool. By default, most people think to point a fan directly at themselves to cool off, yet Les Roberts, an energy expert from Bionic, told the Daily Mail that fans should be pointed out the window instead. 'Opening opposite windows or doors allows air to flow through,' Roberts said. His logic is that if two windows are open, the fan can help push the hot air inside the room out, allowing for cool air to enter from the other window. Sounds genius. 'For even better airflow, you can place a second fan facing inward at the opposite opening to pull cooler air into the room, creating a strong cross-breeze,' he told the outlet. To reap the effects of this tip, the expert said people should do this in the early mornings or later evenings — the coolest parts of the day. 'It's a simple trick that could make a noticeable difference, especially at night, when outdoor temperatures drop,' he said. This simple yet effective trick seems to be one that some people weren't aware of, according to the comment section of a viral TikTok that demonstrated it. 'When he says if we point the fan out the open window, it will cool the room down quicker and he's right,' text read in the video with over 2 million views. 'wait how do i do this?? can i just point a fan out the window or do i need another window open in the house for a breeze to come from??' one commenter asked. 'Why am I learning more on TikTok than I learned in school?' asked someone else. While many others chimed in, agreeing that this hack is a game-changer. 'yuppp bathroom window open, bedroom window open with fan pointing out, cool in minutes,' a comment read. 'I have my fan right in front of one open window to suck cool air into my room, and another window open so the warm air gets pushed out. Bliss,' agreed someone else. 'I've always pointed my fan out of the window and opened a window elsewhere, open the door and you're then funneling cool air through the gaff!' read another comment.

Japan project to nurture film creators unveiled in Cannes with director Kore-eda as judge
CANNES, France -- A Japanese visual media business has launched a project to encourage next-generation creators to produce original films with the aim of submitting the movies to prestigious international film festivals and winning awards. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda, who attended an announcement of the project near the main venue of the Cannes Film Festival in May, took part in judging submissions in the project's inaugural edition. He expressed his hopes that it would "develop not only Japanese films, but also expand to include young Asian filmmakers as candidates." The project was initiated by Imagica Group Inc., a company involved in the visual media business based in Minato Ward, Tokyo, as a gesture of gratitude to the industry on the group's 90th anniversary. The goal is to discover and nurture talented creators and provide them with opportunities to shine on a global stage. Imagica Group will solicit film proposals from companies under its wing and select one film annually to be produced. External creators can also apply if they collaborate with a producer from within the group. The project is set to continue for five years, with a budget cap of 70 million yen (about $500,000) for the first production. Kore-eda, who won the Cannes Festival's highest Palme d'Or in 2018 for his film "Shoplifters" and served as a competition jury member in 2024, welcomed the new project as a long-awaited development. "While national support is important for introducing new Japanese talent overseas, I've always felt that the angle of discovering and nurturing new talent from within the industry has been weak," he said, adding that it would be wonderful if the project continued for 10 or 15 years and supported Asian filmmakers. Other judges include Tokyo International Film Festival Programming Director Shozo Ichiyama. He explained that in Japan, raising funds for film production is difficult without popular source material like novels or manga. "There is great significance in supporting projects based on original screenplays. After reading the submitted scripts, I realized that there are many talented young directors out there," he said delightedly. Yuka Sakano, executive director of the Kawakita Memorial Film Institute, remarked, "I've never heard of a private company supporting a project on this scale. It's innovative." The first project unanimously selected by the three judges from among 88 initial submissions was "Maria," written by Tomoka Terada, 31, who reflected her experience as a social worker in the screenplay. The story follows an 18-year-old girl, Maria, working as a caregiver in Japan, who turns to crime to fund an abortion for her unwanted pregnancy. Terada explained, "The background of the story includes various issues facing modern Japanese society, such as inequality, poverty, the harsh working conditions of care workers, and gender discrimination." Despite its serious themes, the production is described as having a comedic tone, portraying a protagonist who lives with humor and strength. Raised by a single mother working in caregiving, Terada also chose to work in the welfare field, supporting homeless individuals and women who had suffered sexual abuse. She had a passion for writing and a desire to engage in creative expression. During the COVID-19 pandemic, as more clients faced financial difficulties and she struggled to find the time to deal with each one, she watched films. She found they could intricately depict the life of individuals beyond systemic constraints, and that led her to pursue filmmaking. While continuing her work, she has been learning about how to make movies and will be directing for the first time in this project. Visiting the Cannes Film Festival in May, Terada stated, "I thought this was a very distant world, so I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to speak here. I feel that the festival tends to select films that stand with people in difficult situations and strongly convey social messages even from a small-scale perspective. I would be delighted if my work is chosen someday." Hana Tsuchikawa, 31, who is from the same generation as Terada, is working as a producer on "Maria." "I was moved by the story's realism and the warmth of its worldview. I feel a strong connection with Terada as we are the same age, the same gender, and both are taking on the challenge of directing and producing for the first time," she noted. Director Kore-eda praised Terada's screenplay, saying, " It is down-to-earth and depicts universal human beings." He said with a smile, "It was by far the best, and if the other judges hadn't supported it, I was considering producing it at my company."
