Marvel's Thunderbolts Mints $162 Million At Box Office Over The Weekend
Thunderbolts' post-credit scenes tease the anti-heroes in the future.
Marvel's latest cinematic offering—Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan starrer Thunderbolts—has finally opened in theatres, making clean moves at the box office. With a strong start, the film ignited to collect $76 million in the US, going a little slower than usual Marvel releases, which generate at least $100 million to start.
All eyes were set on Thunderbolts, which brings to the fore a team of antiheroes like Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell's John Walker, and David Harbour's Red Guardian, among others. With similar results as the debuts of The Eternals ($71 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($75 million), it is yet to be seen if Thunderbolts will make a large stride at the box office.
As per Entertainment Weekly, the film has brought in $162 million globally. Despite being far from becoming the strongest opener in MCU history, it has made a solid lead on other Marvel films like The Eternals ($71 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($75 million). On the other hand, Thunderbolts' domination at the weekend box office has surpassed Ryan Coogler's Sinners, bringing an end to its undefeated run over two weeks.
As of now, Thunderbolts has finished the weekend with $162 million, amassing $86 million from international markets, according to a Variety report. Made on a budget of $180 million and another $100 million to market, it is yet to be seen if Thunderbolts will make a large stride at the box office.
About Thunderbolts
The Marvel film centres around a group of anti-heroes forced together by Valentina Allegra for a dangerous mission. While struggling with their past traumas and inner struggles, the group manages to pacify Bob and deal with The Void, only to find themselves being introduced as the New Avengers in the post-credit scenes.
With that said, while the main Thunderbolts cast is set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, it is still unclear what roles they will have in the sequel.
