Opinion - America doesn't trust the media, we do trust nurses. What can one learn from the other?

We recently celebrated Nurses' Week, when we see nurses receiving thanks for their hard work and dedication to health care. This recognition is essential, and our community needs to hear it. And then, for the most part, nurses will fade from coverage again until the next year.
Indeed, for more than two decades, nurses have appeared in only about 2 percent of health news reporting. During that time, two facts have remained unchanged: Nurses make up the largest sector of the healthcare workforce, with a caring presence in every practice setting, and we have been consistently named the most trusted profession, according to Gallup.
One thing that has changed? The simultaneous and rapid decline of trust in mass media — and the rapid rise of misinformation, disinformation and political propaganda in turn. Journalism is, in fact, one of the least trusted professions today.
It follows that, as American journalism scrambles to rescue its newsrooms, the industry would benefit from not just including nurses in their coverage but from adopting a nursing model and lens.
Nurses are trusted to enter people's homes, deliver their babies, clean their wounds and prepare their dead for burial. That trust is not accidental; we cultivate it. Nurses must forge genuine connections with every person they meet in order to be clinically effective. Genuine connection requires unconditional respect — even if a person has done or said (or represents) what you believe to be abhorrent.
Our colleagues in journalism cannot say the same.
And so, we find that nurses are not being shut out of national discourse because of something we lack; we are being shut out because something is lacking in journalism today. Those who claim to be curious are often only selectively curious. Those who claim to speak truth to power might, in fact, be blind to the ways in which they rest in their own power — and uphold harmful power structures.
Across the political spectrum, journalists project the confidence of people who hold the truth. In panel discussions, anchor monologues and reporting, they often start with what they know and confirm their knowing.
One thing nurses know, on the other hand, is how to recognize what we don't know. We could not possibly know the complex worlds from which our patients emerge, carrying their baggage, hope and trauma to the doors of our clinics and emergency rooms. So we ask.
The first step in the nursing process is 'assess.' To assess a situation means asking questions and receiving answers without judgement. It often means sitting with someone in narrative messiness, contradictions and non-answers. It can mean allowing someone to (at least for now) hold onto a false belief as they grapple with a painful or confusing new reality.
Nurses prioritize people's stated need, even if it's not our clinical priority. We validate people's concerns, even if we do not share those concerns.
Asking and listening without judgement is the first step in building trust. Yes, it is common for journalists to ask questions, but for many, judgement is inherent to their professional paradigm. The 'journalist-judge' already knows what their audience needs. So, they scrutinize the relevance of honest human responses, discarding the messy bits, carefully curating a gallery of their own design.
Nurses, on the other hand, practice informed consent. We lay out all the options, discuss the pros and cons, and let people decide their own course of action.
When it comes to giving advice, we use proven, science-based communication tactics to motivate behavior change — teachable tactics that journalistic interviewers could use, too. We collaborate and encourage; we don't tell or force. We know that telling a person stuck in an unhealthy thought or behavior pattern what to do will only lead to resentment or rejection.
We do not mock, interrupt or condescend. In fact, we aim to speak in accessible ways — to speak at a slow pace, define new terms, and confirm that people have heard and understood (using techniques like 'say back'). We aim to bring everyone along, not just those with university educations who can speak English or (in the case of broadcast news) process rapid speech between commercial breaks.
Finally, nurses stay, even when everyone else has left — even when there are no resources. Studies show we are often the last clinician to remain when hospitals and clinics fail, and when rural towns are left with no other healthcare infrastructure. We know it is cruel to see people suffering, offer hope and resources, and then take those resources away.
Nurses stay after journalists leave, too. Wildfires that rage across television screens, houses that float away, death tolls that are unprecedented rarely receive a follow-up by our colleagues who cover them. And how often does the coverage include an actionable take-away, such as a QR code for donations, phone numbers for help lines, or any mechanism for collective action?
The fact that journalists can hold captive to millions of viewers and readers and, quite often, not share anything actionable is unacceptable. You bring the horrors of this world into our lives and leave us with little more than political pseudo-solutions and bipartisan blame. Has this worked yet?
The fact is, newsrooms across the country are failing. Those that survive will be the ones who recognize it's time for a radical departure from business as usual. Good stories, gathered and told through a nursing lens, have the potential to heal our country. They might save our newsrooms, too.

'It's specifically approved for certain medical conditions,' said Kiara DeWitt, RN, CPN, founder and CEO of Injectco. 'Chronic migraine is the main one, but other neurological disorders like cervical dystonia (a painful neck muscle condition), and blepharospasm count too.' DeWitt explained that the catch is Botox isn't covered for cosmetic use, so patients have to meet the clinical criteria. For example, Botox injections are sometimes approved for managing an overactive bladder or severe underarm sweating when other treatments have failed. 'You still need a provider who accepts Medicare and can submit the paperwork right,' DeWitt said. 'Otherwise, you are paying hundreds per treatment when you technically qualify. The system will not advertise this, but it is buried in there. You just need a diagnosis that fits and a provider who knows how to code it.' Many are surprised to learn that certain dental services are covered under specific circumstances. While routine dental care like cleanings and fillings isn't covered under traditional Medicare, Part A may cover dental work if it's part of a hospital-related procedure, such as jaw reconstruction after an injury or surgery that requires dental clearance. 'Medicare beneficiaries often are unaware that dental is included in Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C),' said Eric Salinas, a licensed health insurance agent at El-Mag Insurance. For broader coverage, many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans offer dental benefits that include exams, X-rays, cleanings and even dentures. These benefits vary by plan and location, so it's worth reviewing available options during open enrollment to avoid paying out of pocket for essential oral healthcare. Many beneficiaries are surprised to discover that Medicare still covers a range of home-based and mental health services under certain conditions. From chronic care management, transitional care and telehealth counseling to the innovative GUIDE Model for dementia support, these benefits offer critical assistance for patients and caregivers. 'One of the most exciting developments is CMS's (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) GUIDE Model,' said Jared Laudie, owner of Visiting Angels. 'It's a new dementia care initiative that funds services like caregiver training, respite care and 24/7 care navigation for families managing Alzheimer's or other dementias.' However, the services are subject to specific eligibility criteria. 'In-home medical care usually requires that the individual be homebound and under a physician's care,' Laudie said. 'With the GUIDE Model, participation is limited to providers enrolled in the program, and patients must have a formal dementia diagnosis. Many people miss out simply because they don't know what to ask for or which providers participate.' One lesser-known Medicare benefit is its coverage of speech-generating devices for individuals with conditions like ALS or advanced Parkinson's disease that result in severe speech impairments. These devices can be life-changing, allowing patients to communicate more effectively with caregivers and loved ones. 'But access depends on proper clinical documentation, including a formal evaluation by a qualified speech-language pathologist,' said Dr. Kimberly Idoko, a board-certified neurologist and medical director at Everwell Neuro. For Medicare beneficiaries living with two or more chronic conditions, chronic special needs plans (C-SNPs) offer a tailored alternative that many overlook. 'For those eligible, these plans can provide additional benefits and resources not usually covered by Original Medicare or other Medicare Advantage plans,' said Whitney Stidom, vice president of Medicare enablement at eHealth. 'For instance, some C-SNPs may provide additional resources for people with diabetes, including improved coverage for blood glucose monitoring supplies or access to lifestyle programs focused on improving nutrition and exercise habits. This can help people save on out-of-pocket costs to help treat their condition, while empowering them to adopt a healthier lifestyle.' Extreme heat safety tips as dangerous temperatures head to East Coast

Life-threatening heat is enveloping the eastern U.S., with some cities bracing for what could be their highest temperatures in over a decade. On Monday, the heat index -- what the temperature feels like with humidity -- is expected to skyrocket to 98 degrees in New York City; 107 degrees in Philadelphia; 109 degrees in Richmond, Virginia; and 106 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Charleston, West Virginia. Temperatures are forecast to be slightly higher on Tuesday. Doctors recommend taking excessive heat warnings seriously. Over 700 people die from heat-related illnesses every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and extreme heat is considered the deadliest weather-related hazard in the U.S., according to the Fifth National Climate Assessment. A heat wave is a continuous period of abnormally hot weather, generally lasting over two days, according to the National Weather Service. However, the definition of a heat wave varies by region. MORE: How to conserve energy during a heat wave In the Midwest and the Northeast, a heat wave is considered three or more days in a row of temperatures of at least 90 degrees. But in Phoenix, for example, temperatures are regularly well above 90 degrees and into the triple digits without it being from a heat wave. So a heat wave is relative to the local average temperature and may require temperatures to be significantly above normal for several days, according to the NWS. Here are tips to stay safe from the heat from the CDC: Take precautions to prevent sunburn, which can make you dehydrated and affect your ability to cool down. Use sunscreen that's SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes before going outside. Sunscreens that say "broad spectrum" or "UVA/UVB protection" are best. Drink extra fluids, and don't wait until you're thirsty. Avoid very sugary drinks and alcohol, which can cause your body to lose more fluid, and be wary of extra-cold drinks that may cause stomach cramps. Avoiding hot and heavy meals also can reduce your body's overall temperature. Cut down on exercise during heat waves and rest often and in shady areas. Try to limit your time outside to when it is cooler, like in the early morning and evening. Never leave children in a parked car -- even if windows are cracked open. MORE: Hot car safety tips Anyone can suffer from heat-related illness at any time, but these people are at greater risk: -- Babies and young children -- Overweight people -- Those 65 years old or older -- People who overexert during work or exercise -- Those who suffer from heart disease or high blood pressure and those who take certain medications, including for depression, insomnia or poor circulation Symptoms of heat stroke include: -- Body temperature of 103 degrees or higher -- Hot, red, dry or damp skin -- Fast, strong pulse -- Headache -- Dizziness -- Nausea -- Confusion -- Passing out -- No longer sweating Symptoms of heat exhaustion include: -- Heavy sweating -- Cold, pale, clammy skin -- Fast, weak pulse -- Nausea or vomiting -- Muscle cramps -- Feeling tired or weak -- Headache -- Passing out If someone shows symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, call 911, move them somewhere cooler and use towels to cool down their body. Don't forget about your furry friends! Here are some tips from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for how to keep your pets safe in the heat: provide plenty of fresh water so they don't get dehydrated; don't over-exercise pets; never leave pets alone in a parked car; and watch for symptoms of overheating, which include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate and drooling. Animals with flat faces, like pugs, can't pant as well and are more at risk of heat stroke. These pets, as well as older and overweight pets, should be kept inside as much as possible. Collaboration of over one month has ended based on Hims & Hers deceptive promotion and selling of illegitimate, knockoff versions of Wegovy® that put patient safety at risk Novo Nordisk won't stop taking action to protect Americans from the dangers of illicit foreign active pharmaceutical ingredients in knock-off drugs Efforts will continue to make authentic, FDA-approved Wegovy® directly available through NovoCare® Pharmacy to select telehealth organizations that share our commitment to safe and effective medical treatment for patients living with chronic diseases PLAINSBORO, N.J., June 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Novo Nordisk announced today that the company will no longer be working with Hims & Hers Health, Inc., and that direct access to Wegovy® will no longer be available to Hims & Hers Health, Inc. via NovoCare® Pharmacy. In late April, the FDA resolved the Wegovy® shortage based on its conclusion that Novo Nordisk is fully meeting current and projected nationwide demand for this medicine. In support of transitioning patients from knock-off compounded versions to authentic, FDA-approved Wegovy® through NovoCare® Pharmacy, Novo Nordisk began collaborating with telehealth companies. Over one month into the collaboration, Hims & Hers Health, Inc. has failed to adhere to the law which prohibits mass sales of compounded drugs under the false guise of "personalization" and are disseminating deceptive marketing that put patient safety at risk. "Novo Nordisk is firm on our position and protecting patients living with obesity. When patients are prescribed semaglutide treatments by their licensed healthcare professional or a telehealth provider, they are entitled to receive authentic, FDA-approved and regulated Wegovy®," said Dave Moore, Executive Vice President, US Operations of Novo Nordisk Inc. "We will work with telehealth companies to provide direct access to Wegovy® that share our commitment to patient safety – and when companies engage in illegal sham compounding that jeopardizes the health of Americans, we will continue to take action." Novo Nordisk is deeply concerned and is continuing to take proactive measures to keep US patients safe from knock-off drugs made with foreign illicit active pharmaceutical ingredients. Based on Novo Nordisk's investigation, the "semaglutide" active pharmaceutical ingredients that are in the knock-off drugs sold by telehealth entities and compounding pharmacies are manufactured by foreign suppliers in China. According to a report from the Brookings Institute, FDA has never authorized or approved the manufacturing processes used by any of these foreign suppliers to make semaglutide, nor has FDA ever reviewed or authorized the quality of the "semaglutide" they produce. The report also found that a "large share of [these Chinese suppliers] were never inspected by FDA, and many of those that were [inspected] had drug quality assurance violations." US patients should not be exposed to knock-off drugs made with unsafe and illicit foreign ingredients. Wegovy® may increase the chance of food getting into your lungs during surgery or other procedures.
