Exercise improves colon cancer survival, Canadian researchers say
TORONTO — Canadian researchers say a new study shows regular exercise improves survival for colon cancer patients.
The study, published Sunday in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that patients who participated in a supervised exercise program after completing their chemotherapy were 28 per cent less likely to have their colon cancer return than patients in the control group.
"It's the first clinical trial in the world asking whether exercise can improve cancer survival. And in fact, the results were astounding," Dr. Christopher Booth, a co-chair of the international study and a medical oncologist at Kingston Health Sciences Centre in Kingston, Ont., said in an interview.
The patients in the exercise group regularly met with a physical activity consultant — usually a physiotherapist, kinesiologist or personal trainer — to help them stick to a structured exercise program for three years.
The patients in the control group received health education materials that encouraged physical fitness after their chemotherapy, but were not given a physical activity support person.
The patients in the structured exercise group had a 37 per cent lower risk of death than those in the control group, the study said.
The study, which was conducted in cancer centres across Canada and in other countries including Australia and the U.K., shows a prescription for a structured exercise program should be part of the treatment for colon cancer, said Booth, who is also a professor of oncology at Queen's University.
"If we had a cancer drug with this amount of benefit, it would cost between $100,000 and $200,000 per year (and) it would be celebrated in all the major guidelines across oncology societies worldwide," he said.
"And there's no question it would be funded by health systems worldwide and included as a standard of care."
Although the research team hasn't yet done a formal cost-benefit analysis, Booth said the cost of providing a physical activity support person for three years would likely be between $3,000 and $5,000 per patient.
That would be a worthwhile investment for the health-care system to make, he said.
"When we have something like exercise, which is both incredibly affordable and sustainable for health systems with comparable magnitude of benefit, I think it would be a tragic failure of health policy not to ensure this is provided to all patients."
Booth and his colleagues started the randomized control trial, a model widely considered the gold standard in medical research, more than 15 years ago after seeing promising data in observational studies suggesting exercise would benefit colon cancer patients.
The trial included 889 colon cancer patients, followed between 2009 and 2024, who had completed their chemotherapy treatments.
The researchers assessed their baseline level of fitness and randomized them to assign half the participants to the structured exercise group and the other half to the control group.
Those in the exercise group saw a physical activity consultant every two weeks for their first year in the study and then once a month for two years afterward.
During those sessions, they would work on motivation and goal-setting to reach their targeted hours of exercise per week. The second part of the session was a supervised exercise session.
Their goal was to increase their exercise level by at least 10 metabolic equivalents, or METS, per week. A MET is a unit of energy expended.
Participants could choose what exercises they wanted to do as long as they met their MET target. Many chose brisk walking, which adds up to about four METS an hour.
One of those participants was Terri Swain-Collins, who lives in Kingston and is one of Booth's patients.
Now 62, Swain-Collins was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in June 2021 after a screening test and follow-up colonoscopy.
When Booth asked if she would be interested in participating in the study, she didn't know whether she would be in the structured exercise group or the control group.
Swain-Collins was assigned to the exercise group. At the time, she was returning to work as a busy X-ray technologist after her treatment, plus helping to manage her husband's business, and wasn't sure where she'd find the time for exercise.
Thanks to the physiotherapist assigned to her, she was motivated to walk for at least 45 minutes, three times a week.
"Being accountable to her is what really helped me continue with it," Swain-Collins said in an interview.
"If I'd have been just told, you know, 'exercise is good for you and off you go,' I never would have done what I'm doing now," she said.
There's no sign of her cancer returning and Swain-Collins said she's "definitely" more fit now.
"I hope anyone diagnosed with cancer does get this type of opportunity," she said.
"I think it might really make a difference."

Measles 'out of control,' experts warn, as Alberta case counts surpass 1,000
Alberta's measles outbreaks have now eclipsed the 1,000-case mark and infectious disease specialists are warning the virus is "impossible to contain," given the current level of transmission. The province reported another 24 cases on Friday, including 14 in the north zone, nine in the south and one in the Edmonton zone. This brings the total confirmed cases since the outbreaks began in March to 1,020. "It is a very grim milestone," said Dr. Karina Top, a pediatric infectious disease physician at the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton, which has been treating children with measles. "I'm very worried we're going to see more hospitalizations and some deaths soon because we know the death rate is about one to two per thousand. So it's likely that we're going to see that and that will be a very tragic day." Measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications including pneumonia, brain inflammation — which can trigger seizures, deafness and brain damage — as well as premature delivery. A premature baby who was born with measles died in Ontario recently. And another young child died of measles in that province last year. Doctors warn there are severe long-term consequences as well, including immune system impacts and a degenerative neurological condition that occurs seven to ten years after an initial measles infection. It is rare but nearly always fatal. 'Out of control' Alberta's case count has more than doubled in the last month. On May 20, a total of 486 cases had been confirmed. "This is out of control," said Top. The hardest hit areas are the south, central and north zones, where there are some very low vaccination rates among young children. Case counts have been rising quickly in the north zone, which has now topped 200 cases. The south zone has confirmed 681 cases and the central zone has 105. And health officials are warning the virus is more widespread in those areas than case counts reflect. "Due to the number of people in these areas who may not be immune to measles, it's likely that some cases are going undetected or unreported," the Alberta government's measles web page states. "I think we really need to be doing everything we can to engage with those communities that are affected and community leaders to see how best we can work with them to try to get people vaccinated to help contain this infection," said Top. "And [we need to] get everyone else up to date so that if there are other cases introduced in Edmonton, Calgary or elsewhere in the province, it can be contained more quickly." University of Calgary infectious disease physician Dr. Dan Gregson is also worried about Alberta's surging measles cases. "This transmission is just out of the box. It's impossible to contain at the present time," he said. "The risk, right now, of your child getting measles in Alberta if they're not immunized is pretty high." Gregson is urging parents who have opted not to immunize their children to rethink that decision. "If you had made a decision not to vaccinate because measles was not circulating, that's no longer true. We don't have herd immunity. There's measles circulating in the community. And the best way to prevent your child from having a complication would be to get them vaccinated," he said. The vast majority of Alberta's measles cases are among the unimmunized. The most recent data shows 85 Albertans have been hospitalized due to this year's outbreaks, including 14 who have ended up in intensive care. "Most of these hospitalizations are due to patients having pneumonia — they're short of breath, they have to wear oxygen. Some of them are due to brain inflammation. [It's] not a pleasant thing for the parents or the child to have to go through," said Gregson. In Edmonton, where the Stollery Children's Hospital is treating the sickest patients from northern Alberta, Top said the outbreaks are taking a toll. "It is distressing as a pediatrician to see children that are sick from a disease that is completely vaccine preventable." According to provincial data, as of Friday there was one Albertan in ICU due to measles. No deaths have been reported.

Vitalhub concludes Induction Healthcare acquisition
Canadian software company Vitalhub has announced the completion of its previously announced acquisition of Induction Healthcare Group. The acquisition was finalised through a court-sanctioned scheme of arrangement under Part 26 of the Companies Act 2006. Vitalhub consented to the acquisition terms in April, agreeing to a cash purchase that values Induction Healthcare at approximately £9.7m ($13.06m).
