Peter Kay's Car Share co-star Sian Gibson feared she'd 'ruined' his career

Sian Gibson had given up on showbusiness and was was living happily in Mold, north Wales with her family, when an email from the actress' old friend Peter Kay changed everything
Sian Gibson had worked with Peter Kay more than once before winning the role of Kayleigh in Car Share, appearing in That Peter Kay Thing and three episodes of Phoenix Nights. But when she first saw a script for the much-loved BBC series, she had almost completely given up on acting.
'I was working in a call centre in Chester when Peter sent me a script, asking what I thought of it,' she told the Radio Times.

Sian, who pops up on Sunday Brunch this weekend, has stayed busy since the success of Car Share. She's appeared in Death in Paradise, Taskmaster and most recently with Timothy Spall in the BBC's Death Valley.

But she didn't think Car Share would restart her acting career – in fact she thought her performance might have wrecked Peter Kay's career as well: 'When I first saw it, I thought I was dreadful – I was worried that I had just ruined Peter Kay's career.'
Sian's fears proved to be unfounded and Car Share went on to be one of the most-watched shows on iPlayer, winning multiple awards including Best Comedy at the 2016, 2018 and 2019 National Television Awards.
Sian has known Peter for many years. They had bonded over a shared sense of humour while they were studying performing arts at the University of Salford. She says she was sure that he was the student from her year that was most likely to succeed.
Peter would painstakingly edit together his home-made sketches into short films, Sian recalls, and had a perfectionist streak that viewers would soon see in Car Share. Songs on the show's fictitious Forever FM radio station often blossom into wildly imaginative 'pop video' fantasy sequences.

Sian's path to fame was a little rockier than Peter's, she revealed. 'Things were great at the beginning of my career. Because I'm short, I always played younger parts. I was in my 20s and always played teenagers. Then I hit 30 and that doesn't work anymore. It all just dried up.'
She recalled one disastrous audition that, for a while, looked like it would be the last one: "I remember going to the final audition of my acting career,' she recalled.

Sian explained that the audition was for a small role in Emmerdale: "All I had to say was, 'You alright?' I sat in the waiting room getting nervous and I was that desperate for the job I couldn't even deliver the line – I was too hyper because I wanted it so much. That's when I realised it was over.'
She married her husband Ian, a gas fitter, and in 2013 they had a daughter together. She wasn't too keen on her job in a banking call centre but it was steady work and she ended up staying there for several years: "Because the people were nice and it was next door to a lovely garden centre that did the best toasties,' she told the Independent. 'I'm still not entirely sure what they did.'
When Peter sent her the Car Share script, she asked him why he hadn't chosen 'one of those really good actresses' such as Suranne Jones or Sheridan Smith, but he explained to her that what was most important to him was their easy chemistry, which came from a 20-year friendship.

The retired engineer has travelled over 400,000 miles since he started in 1984 and logs every pub he has visited at his West Bromwich home. ‌ ‌ He said: 'Every pub is logged, since number one, and I have over 300 lever arch files with photos, cards and a write up of the pubs. I leave a calling card which I have signed by a pub team member to prove I have been in.' In every pub he visits Peter asks the landlord to make a £1 donation to the Midland Air Ambulance and has so far raised over £35,000. He said: 'Some give a quid, some give a tenner, some £20 and some give nowt. But it's a great charity.' Peter started his journey when he and his pals started visiting pubs listed on a map handed out by Wolverhampton based Banks brewery. After visiting 300 pubs in a year they decided to continue. He said: 'It's taken me 41 years but I've now visited 24,000 pubs, but there are still hundreds more to go. We all love our real ale, but we don't overdo it, 'We have visited every single island with a pub around the British Isles, 69 of them. We've been to the Shetlands, Orkneys, Jersey, Guernsey. It's been a great adventure. I'm going to North Yorkshire next weekend for four days and then Essex after that, so we'll chalk up a few more on the list. Sometimes I'm on my own, but mostly it's a really good crew I travel with. It's brilliant fun. ‌ 'We've travelled across Europe too, to the military sites, the Somme, the Maginot line, the British war graves. We learn about the history and we visit the local pubs too, but they don't count on the list. One of the greatest people we found was a guy from World War 2 who used to look after the SAS war graves in France, He was 92 when we met him.' Peter added: 'I love unusual pubs, pubs with something that makes them stand out. Pubs full of character and antiques. We love our real ales but we also try the stouts and milds.' ‌ Peter also backed The Mirror 's Save Our Pubs campaign - which calls for a "fighting fund" to help struggling pubs, recognising good pubs are the heart of the community. The campaign is crucial because pub closures have a significant impact on communities, leading to job losses and the loss of important social spaces. More than 400 pubs closed for good in England and Wales last year meaning the number of locals has dropped below 39,000 for the first time. Peter said: 'The local pub is vital in so many areas. You can meet for a chat and a laugh. But the prices are ridiculous now. You can pay £7 for a pint. ‌ 'There's the business costs, the taxes, the minimum wage doesn't help. Landlords have to cover the costs and it's a shame so many are closing. The government does need to do more to help.' Peter's top five pubs: Yew Tree Inn, Caulden Staffs: 'You've got to see it to believe it. It's fantastic, full of antiques.' The Mug House, Claines, Worcester: 'A cracking old pub next to a church yard.' The Black Lion, Consall Forge, North Staffs: 'Amazing scenery, next to an old steam railway and canal. It was hard to find, but it's easy now with Sat Nav.' The Rising Sun, Tipton: 'My local, I can't leave that out.' Payton Arms, Stoke Lyne, Oxfordshire: 'A fantastic, unique place. Alan Cumming to receive honorary degree from University of St Andrews

Actor Alan Cumming is to receive an honorary degree from the University of St Andrews during a week of graduations for students from almost 90 countries. More than 2,200 students will gather at the University of St Andrews from June 30 for summer graduation ceremonies. Graduates from 88 different countries, including Canada, Australia and Nepal will receive their awards in the Younger Hall from June 30 to July 4. The graduation ceremony season will include nine 'distinguished individuals' honoured for their contributions to sport, politics, science, medicine and the arts. Marvel actor and The Traitors US presenter Alan Cumming will receive an honorary degree on Thursday July 3, while BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner will be presented with one on Friday July 4. Sustainability campaigner Sara Parkin and US golfer Judy Rankin will also receive the accolade during the week. Also recognised will be Russian-American scientist Eugene Koonin and political theorist and feminist writer Professor Cynthia Enloe. There is one ceremony on June 30 at 2pm, while the other ceremonies will occur twice in one day.
