's push to breathe new life into its lineup will see the debut of an updated version of the Leaf, the struggling brand's compact family car that was the world's first mass-market
electric vehicle

The Leaf has sold almost 700,000 units since it was originally released in 2010, making Nissan an EV pioneer. But the Japanese carmaker struggled to maintain that early momentum, only introducing its second fully electric model — the
Ariya SUV
— in 2022 into a market crowded with high-tech offerings.
Now, as Chief Executive Officer Ivan Espinosa undertakes an ambitious rescue plan to stem the carmaker's rapidly deteriorating financial position, Nissan is betting a revamp of the Leaf will help it regain its edge. The company doesn't need a savior to get back on its feet, according to Espinosa, who has put his focus on slashing jobs and shutting factories to get Nissan back on track.

The third generation of the popular EV has received a major facelift. It's now equipped with flush door handles, a panoramic glass roof and angular headlights. The car will also be the debut of a new powertrain with a smaller motor, according to the company.

The carmaker will assemble vehicles for the US market at its plant in Tochigi, north of Tokyo. Cars will also be made at its facility in Sunderland, in the UK.
The Leaf has enjoyed enduring popularity in Europe and the region is the model's biggest market, with sales of 286,200 vehicles since its debut. Nissan has sold 221,300 Leaf cars in North America and 186,200 in Japan over the same period. It's never been sold in China and Nissan said it currently has no plans to introduce the Leaf to that market.
The Leaf will be sold first in the US, during the fall. The company didn't disclose pricing details, but the current model starts at $28,140
The new Leaf comes part way through Nissan's three-year effort to recover from its worst crisis in decades. The collapse of talks earlier this year to join forces with Honda Motor Co. have added impetus for the automaker to get operations back on track under Espinosa, who took over as CEO in April.
He's helming a restructuring that will see 20,000 jobs cut and the closure of seven of Nissan's 17 plants by March 2028 after the carmaker reported a net loss of ¥670.9 billion ($4.6 billion) for the most recent fiscal year. It withheld annual profit guidance for the current year due to uncertainty about the impact of Trump's trade war.
Nissan is also seeking to raise more than ¥1 trillion from debt and asset sales ahead of a huge loan repayment wall next year, Bloomberg News previously reported, citing internal documents. That includes plans to issue as much as ¥630 billion in convertible securities and bonds, including high-yielding US dollar and euro notes, and a £1 billion ($1.4 billion) syndicated loan guaranteed by UK Export Finance.

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has sanctioned the replacement of eight aging cattle-catching vehicles with newly designed, CNG-powered alternatives. The move is expected to improve operational efficiency and support the city's green initiatives. The civic agency has set aside 2.56 crore for the new vehicles. Cattle roaming in public areas not only pose a danger to motorists and pedestrians but also contribute to frequent traffic congestion, particularly in densely populated and commercial zones. Currently, GCC operates 20 specially fabricated vehicles equipped with hydraulic lifts to manage such situations. However, eight of these vehicles have been in continuous operation for over 10 years and are now beyond economical repair, officials said. "Additionally, diesel engines contribute to urban air pollution. Administration is now exploring cleaner alternatives," said a senior GCC official. During the budget session, the mayor announced that the civic body will procure CNG vehicles for cattle. Each of the new CNG vehicles is estimated to cost 32 lakh, bringing the total project cost for all eight units to 2.56 crore. ‘Cracks' on flyovers raise alarm, officials say no threat
Ranchi: 'Cracks' on the Kantatoli and Siramtoli flyovers have raised safety concerns among commuters, prompting quick inspection and intervention by the road construction department (RCD). These 'cracks', seen as lines along the walls with soft material protruding in some places, led to speculation about structural flaws. However, officials clarified that these are expansion joints, a critical design feature in large concrete structures, and pose no structural threat. "An expansion joint is a deliberate gap left between sections of concrete to allow for thermal expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. The gap is often filled with compressible materials like thermocol or foam to absorb movement. In the case of 2.24-km long Kantatoli flyover, built at a cost of Rs 224 crore, commuters observed thermocol dislodging from the joints before the Kokar ramp, which caused concern," Sunil Kumar, secretary of urban development and housing department (UDHD) and RCD, said.
