2.5cr allocated by GCC for CNG cattle-catching vehicles in city

Time of Indiaa day ago

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has sanctioned the replacement of eight aging cattle-catching vehicles with newly designed, CNG-powered alternatives. The move is expected to improve operational efficiency and support the city's green initiatives.
The civic agency has set aside 2.56 crore for the new vehicles.
Cattle roaming in public areas not only pose a danger to motorists and pedestrians but also contribute to frequent traffic congestion, particularly in densely populated and commercial zones. Currently, GCC operates 20 specially fabricated vehicles equipped with hydraulic lifts to manage such situations. However, eight of these vehicles have been in continuous operation for over 10 years and are now beyond economical repair, officials said.
"Additionally, diesel engines contribute to urban air pollution. Administration is now exploring cleaner alternatives," said a senior GCC official. During the budget session, the mayor announced that the civic body will procure CNG vehicles for cattle.
Each of the new CNG vehicles is estimated to cost 32 lakh, bringing the total project cost for all eight units to 2.56 crore. Once the new vehicles are inducted into service, GCC will initiate the scrapping of the obsolete vehicles, in accordance with environmental and safety regulations.

Members of the public, however, lament over stray cattle menace. "We need permanent solution for the issue. The civic body must carry out an intensive cattle-catching drive across the city and increase penalties for owners who violate the guidelines," said S Antony Prince, a resident of Madipakkam.

12x Top Fuel winner Leah Pruett's comeback plan begins as Tony Stewart Racing grants test day wish

Leah Pruett (Image Source: Getty) Leah Pruett made headlines back in early 2024, but this time it's one of her cars rather than her son, Dominic James. After sitting out the previous two events to recover, the 12-time NHRA Top Fuel winner returned to action on June 23 during a private test session hosted by Tony Stewart Racing at Virginia Motorsports Park. As for a return to full-time play, there is still no official announcement. However, this is a significant indicator of her return to the sport since she stepped away from competition. It came in the waning days following the Virginia NHRA Nationals and allowed Pruett to reacclimate to her dragster in an easy-going, post-race atmosphere. Leah Pruett's surprise test run signals readiness to return Pruett, who drove the No. 14 TSR Dodge//SRT Direct Connection Top Fuel dragster, amassed numerous passes down the race track without missing a beat. It was more than symbolic: with that run, she shed any wayward uncertainty and got reacquainted with the car she knows better than anybody. Pruett walked away to concentrate on family life but remained very much aligned with the team during the year, also continuing her work in areas of operations, testing, and mentorship. But to the sources close to the team, it was not a publicity stunt, but rather a significant step to a return to competitiveness. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Install the Perfect Pool at Home – Start Here Backyard Pool | Search Ads Learn More Undo There is no concrete timetable for her return within the actual competitive season, but everything seems to point towards a return within the next year or so. Tony Stewart's continued support—on and off the track Tony Stewart, who stepped into Pruett's shoes in 2024 and captured NHRA Rookie of the Year honors, has always maintained that the door is wide open for her to return. She has a family reason for stepping back, and he has always been supportive of her decision, saying he will happily step back whenever she wants. ‘I prefer to remember him smiling': Flavio Briatore explains why he stays away from Michael Schumacher

More than a decade after Michael Schumacher 's life-altering skiing crash, former Benetton team boss Flavio Briatore has offered one of the few fresh glimpses into the F1 legend's closed world. Speaking to Italy's Corriere della Sera , and echoed in follow-up coverage across international outlets, the 74-year-old said he still speaks with Schumacher's wife, Corinna, but chooses not to visit the seven-time world champion at their Swiss home. His reasons shed light on both a long, private friendship and the painful reality of Schumacher's condition. A friend who keeps his distance 'If I close my eyes, I see Michael smiling after a victory. I'd rather remember him like that than see him lying in bed,' Briatore told the paper. Those words capture a dilemma familiar to many who have watched loved ones suffer catastrophic injury: the pull between loyalty and the wish to preserve happier memories. Schumacher, 56, has not been seen in public since the off-piste accident in Méribel, France, on 29 December 2013, which left him with severe brain trauma. In steady touch with Corinna Although he stays away physically, Briatore said the lines of communication remain open. 'Corinna and I talk often,' he revealed, underscoring the mutual trust that still links Schumacher's inner circle to the man who first spotted the German's talent in the early 1990s. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What She Did Mid-Air Left Passengers Speechless medalmerit Learn More Undo Corinna has famously guarded her husband's privacy, releasing virtually no medical detail beyond confirming that he continues rehabilitation at their Lake Geneva estate. Briatore's comment respects that secrecy while hinting at the solidarity friends maintain from a distance. The Benetton bond that changed F1 Briatore's connection to Schumacher runs deep: as Benetton team principal he fast-tracked a 22-year-old rookie into the seat in 1991, then built the outfit around him. Schumacher repaid that faith with back-to-back world titles in 1994 and 1995—championships that launched a career which ultimately tied Lewis Hamilton's record of seven crowns. That shared history explains why Briatore's words carry weight; few others were as close during the German's meteoric rise. A guarded legacy, a public yearning Since the accident, official updates on Schumacher have been scant. Even small gestures—like fellow great Sir Jackie Stewart carrying a helmet bearing the initials 'MS' during a Bahrain GP lap earlier this year—make headlines because information is so rare. Briatore's decision 'not to intrude,' as some supporters interpret it, reinforces the family's stance: Michael's recovery is private, and memories of his brilliance on track remain the picture they wish the world to keep. Why Briatore's stance matters Fans, sponsors and former colleagues still crave news of one of motorsport's biggest icons. Yet Briatore's comments remind observers that respect sometimes means restraint. By choosing memories of a champion lifting trophies over the reality of long-term care, he signals that Schumacher's competitive spirit—not his injury—should define his story. As the F1 paddock rolls on without the driver who once owned its record books, that perspective may be the closest thing to an update the public receives—and, Briatore suggests, perhaps the fairest way to honor a friend.
