Old Dominion's May update in line with prior Q2 guide
Less-than-truckload carrier Old Dominion Freight Line saw 'continued softness' in May as revenue per day fell 5.8% year over year. Lower volumes were again only partially offset by higher yields. The trend is a continuation from what was experienced in April and during the first quarter.
Old Dominion (NASDAQ: ODFL) reported an 8.4% y/y decline in tonnage per day during May as shipments fell 6.8% and weight per shipment was down 1.9%. The carrier's April tonnage was off 8.8%, which followed a 6.3% decline in the first quarter.
The monthly tonnage declines continue to moderate on a two-year-stacked comparison. May tonnage was down 6.9% (down 6.5% in April), which is an improvement from the low-double-digit declines recorded last year and into the first quarter.
A prolonged freight downturn and a sagging industrial sector have weighed on LTL demand.
The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) – a bellwether for manufacturing activity – remained slightly in contraction territory during May at 48.5. The index has been underwater in 29 of the past 31 months. The PMI dataset typically leads inflections in LTL volumes by approximately three months.
The PMI new orders subindex – a proxy for future near-term activity – improved slightly but remained in decline at 47.6. The new export orders subindex continued to see the overhang of tariffs, falling into 'extreme contraction' at 40.1.
The LTL industry continues to capture rate increases despite the demand malaise.
Old Dominion said revenue per hundredweight, or yield, was up 3.2% y/y for the first two months of the second quarter (5.6% higher excluding fuel surcharges). The dip in average shipment weight modestly benefited the metric.
Retail diesel fuel prices were off 8.5% y/y in May following an 11% decline in April. A sliding fuel surcharge scale makes higher diesel prices incrementally more accretive to LTL carrier margins but presents a headwind when fuel prices are falling.
'We believe that our market share has remained relatively consistent throughout this extended period of economic softness, despite the year-over-year decrease in our LTL volumes,' Old Dominion President and CEO Marty Freeman said in a Wednesday news release. 'Customers have continued to value our industry-leading service, which supports our ongoing yield management initiatives.'
The company previously guided to second-quarter revenue of approximately $1.4 billion (a 7% y/y decline, or a 5% decline on a per-day basis) assuming April's volume and yield trends held throughout the quarter. That outlook included a 5% to 5.5% increase in yield (excluding fuel), which is in line with the actual result seen during the two months.
A second-quarter operating ratio forecast calls for only 100 basis points of sequential improvement from the first quarter versus the normal change rate of 300 to 350 bps of improvement. That guide implies a 74.4% OR, which would be 250 bps worse y/y.
The company normally sees an 8% step up in revenue sequentially in the second quarter but is only seeing a 3% increase so far this year.
'While the macroeconomic environment remains uncertain, we will continue to focus on executing on our long-term strategic plan,' Freeman added. 'Our service metrics and value proposition remain best in class, which we believe puts us in a unique position to win profitable market share and increase shareholder value over the long term.'
Shares of ODFL were off 1.1% in early trading on Wednesday compared to the S&P 500, which was up 0.3%.

Why Couchbase Stock Is Skyrocketing Today
Couchbase announced that it's on track to be acquired by Haveli Investments. The company is set to be acquired at a $1.5 billion valuation that works out to a buyout price of $24.50 per share. The acquisition looks set to close in the very near future, and Couchbase stock is now valued very close to the buyout price. 10 stocks we like better than Couchbase › Couchbase (NASDAQ: BASE) stock is seeing a huge jump in Friday's trading following news of a buyout for the company. The software specialist's share price was up 30% as of 3:25 p.m. ET. Before market open this morning, Couchbase published a press release announcing that it had entered into an agreement to be acquired by Haveli Investments. The deal will see Couchbase acquired at a $1.5 billion valuation, representing a 29% premium compared to the company's price at market close on June 18. With the company valued at $1.5 billion in the acquisition, shareholders will receive $24.50 per share as part of the all-cash buyout. Couchbase will become a privately held company after the deal is completed. The company says that the buyout is expected to close before the end of this month, and Haveli indicated that Couchbase's strengths in artificial intelligence (AI) development tools was a key factor in its acquisition move. Couchbase says that the acquisition agreement includes a "go-shop" period, which will allow the company to explore other buyout offers before 11:59 p.m. ET on June 23. While this potentially leaves the door open for another suitor to come in with a higher buyout offer, it's also an extremely short window for another potential buyer to come in with their own buyout terms. Couchbase's press release for its acquisition by Haveli Investments suggests that it's extremely likely that the purchase will be completed after this coming Monday. As of this writing, the company's share price has risen to be roughly in line with the scheduled buyout price -- which suggests that there's very little reason for new investors to enter the stock at this point. Pre-Markets Climb on Rate Cut Visibility
Friday, June 20, 2025We finish off the trading week after a nice edge-of-summer break for Juneteenth yesterday. Pre-market indexes are climbing a quarter-point to a third of a point higher at this hour, with the small-cap Russell 2000 already up more than +1%. Only the Russell is up over the past five trading days, but the other indexes are Dow is up +114 points right now, with the S&P 500 +14. The Nasdaq is +62 points at this hour, with the Russell +25 points. Currently, only the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq are up (marginally) year to date. Bond yields are remaining in place, more or less: +4.44% on the 10-year, +3.95% on the 2-year and +4.94% on the 30-year. Headline Philly Fed manufacturing came in at -4.0 for June, equalling the prior month's level and notching the third-straight month lower. Business conditions, capital expenditures, new orders and prices paid were all lower last month. And the Employment Index sank lower than expected, to -9.8. This could be seen as a further indication of a softening labor market in the traders are not missing this opportunity: a sinking Employment Index, while a relatively minor part of the Philly Fed Index (which focuses on the region around Philadelphia and the goods-producing sector there), do point to an opening for the Fed to lower interest rates at some point in the future. But the Fed would have to see demonstrably worse employment numbers first. We will most certainly track this new infusion of positivity into the stock market; it may even bring us a positive trading week over all, depending on the size of gains. We also have to keep our eyes and ears open about potential trade deals ahead of the July 9th deadline, as well as any new developments in the Middle East, on which President Trump has cooled his rhetoric (with yet another self-imposed deadline of two weeks before making a decision on whether to make a move on Iran). After today's open, the latest U.S. Leading Economic Indicators (LEI) report will come out for the month of May. Expectations are for a headline to drift marginally negative: -0.1%, from a deeper -1.0% for April and -0.8% for March. We are now scraping 9-year lows on LEI — well off the late 2021/early 2022 April, all components were lower except Lending Credit and Manufacturing New Orders, both of which were up marginally. Meanwhile, the Coincident Economic Index (CEI) has fully recovered from Covid-era lows to keep its upward trajectory. While the LEI is a leading indicator for growth, the CEI reflects current economic conditions. It's a big data week starting on Monday. Various prints on the housing market, Services and Manufacturing PMI, Durable Goods, Jobless Claims and Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) — a week from today — will all be hitting the tape. PCE levels in particular are important, as they tend to have a pronounced effect on future Fed monetary policy or comments about this article and/or author?
