2025 NFL Draft: Drake Maye gets help as Patriots take OT Will Campbell with 4th pick

Yahoo21-05-2025

The good news about having a roster in disrepair is that practically any first-round draft pick will fill a position of need.
The New England Patriots didn't need a quarterback coming into the NFL Draft, having selected Drake Maye with the third overall pick last year, but they needed just about everything else. The bad news was there was a quarterback (Cam Ward) and two generational prospects (Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter) in this year's draft and the Patriots had the fourth pick, meaning they didn't have a shot at that upper tier. They can thank a win in last season's finale for that.
The Patriots decided that protecting that young quarterback was a priority. New England selected LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell fourth overall on Thursday night. Given the fireworks that happened with a stunning trade between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns for the second pick, which Jacksonville used on receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, the Patriots' pick of an offensive lineman flew as far under the radar as possible.
Maye had to be happy to see that pick though.
The Patriots were on track to get the first pick of the draft until a win in the season finale.
Heading into a Week 18 game against the Buffalo Bills, New England would have clinched the first pick with a loss. But against a Bills team that had its playoff seed clinched, and perhaps didn't want their division rival to get the first overall pick, the Patriots won 23-16. Backup quarterback Joe Milton III, who was traded to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, had a fantastic day in leading the win.
That win pushed the Patriots from the first pick to the fourth. That meant they were likely out of the mix for Hunter or Carter, either of whom would have fit perfectly in New England's rebuild.
But the Patriots need blue-chip talent at just about every position and there were options. They badly needed offensive line help to help Maye and could've picked any tackle in the class. The defensive line is still an issue, even after adding help in free agency, and defensive tackle Mason Graham was available. New coach Mike Vrabel would never turn down help on that side of the ball, as the Patriots' defensive-heavy free agency haul showed.
The Patriots couldn't go wrong getting their second-year quarterback some help, however.
Campbell was debated among the top offensive tackles in the draft. He has shorter arms than most teams prefer at offensive tackle, and that was discussed extensively. But the track record was too strong to pass up.
Campbell is 6-foot-6, 319 pounds and a good athlete who tested well at the NFL scouting combine. He played against plenty of NFL-level talent in the SEC and was a first-team All-American. He started right away as a freshman at LSU and dominated throughout his career.
Maye had a promising rookie season playing behind a poor offensive line, but the Patriots knew they needed to upgrade his protection. They signed tackle Morgan Moses this offseason, but a cornerstone on the line was still needed.
Picking Campbell isn't as exciting as some other picks in the first round, but it made perfect sense for New England.

3 Steelers defenders primed for breakout season in 2025

As the Steelers' 2025 roster begins to take shape, several defensive players are positioned for huge breakout seasons this year. These three defenders have flashed moments of greatness — but 2025 could be the year they break out and solidify themselves among the NFL's elite. Pittsburgh won 34-11. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports Porter's first two years in the NFL were filled with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows — but all that should change in Year 3 for the Steelers corner. The acquisition of Darius Slay Jr. should work wonders for Porter's development, as the veteran cornerback has claimed he's already taken the young Steeler under his wing. Mandatory Credit: Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images Wilson had a tremendous rookie season and has shown zero signs of slowing down this offseason — having added weight to his frame in preparation to deliver an even more impressive Year 2. The return of veteran ILB Cole Holcomb could push the young linebacker to new heights, as Wilson gears up to potentially lead the retooled Steelers defense. NT Keeanu Benton Aug 17, 2024; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Keeanu Benton (95) sacks Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitchell Trubisky (11) during the first quarter at Acrisure Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Barry Reeger-USA TODAY Sports Benton has steadily improved every year since being drafted by the Steelers in 2023 — and there's no reason to assume that'll change in 2025, especially after the unit vastly improved this offseason through both free agency and the NFL Draft. Nose tackles may be the unsung heroes on defense, but no one will be able to deny Benton's impact this year as he pairs with Cam Heyward and rookie Derrick Harmon to form one of the league's strongest interior defensive lines. Washington Commanders star spotted at NBA Finals Game 6

The Commanders were represented at the NBA Finals on Thursday. The NBA Championship series game six was being played in Indianapolis, as the Indiana Pacers, down three games to two, were hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder in a must-win game for the Pacers. The Pacers broke open a tight game early in the second quarter and never looked back, defeating OKC by 17 points (108-91). In attendance was Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Most Commanders fans probably recall McLaurin being drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft, having played his college ball at Ohio State. Not as readily known (and understandably so) is that McLaurin was actually born in Indianapolis. Most recently, McLaurin made the news because he did not attend OTAs or the mandatory minicamp. He is negotiating a new deal. Under contract through the 2025 season, McLaurin has made no indication that he might not show up for the beginning of training camp. Two weeks ago, there was a report that McLaurin was frustrated with the Commanders. However, seeing that McLaurin never broadcast his feelings on the matter via social media or the press, there was reason to believe that perhaps his agent was the source of the "report." As of Saturday (June 21), no public details of the contract were known. We do not know if the sticking point is years of the contract, guaranteed money, or perhaps money upfront that is preventing the deal from being consummated. We simply don't know anything that would help us understand why the two parties have not yet come to an agreement. McLaurin played his high school football at Cathedral High in Indianapolis, so it's understandable that Terry is definitely pulling for the Pacers in the NBA Finals. Mark Clayton, a big-time receiver in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers (1983-93), also played his high school ball at Cathedral. In all, ten Cathedral players, have played in the NFL, with Clayton and McLaurin being the most recognizable of the group.

Predicting Steelers potential trade package for Jalen Ramsey

There is nothing more exciting than trade speculation — and there has been no shortage of it with the Jalen Ramsey to Pittsburgh rumors. Luckily for the Steelers, however, acquiring the Dolphins' All-Pro cornerback could come at a bargain, as Miami is likely desperate to offload his massive contract. The Rams demanded just a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long in the trade that sent Ramsey from Los Angeles to Miami — but that was two years ago, when his contract was more feasible. Advertisement Ramsey's current deal, which expires in 2029, is far from ideal for any team looking to acquire him — with $25 million due in 2026, $26.8 million in 2027, and $36.1 million in 2028. That financial burden should force the Dolphins to settle for a Day 3 draft pick. In addition to Miami potentially eating some of his contract, the Steelers could theoretically acquire Ramsey for a fourth- or fifth-round draft pick — potentially creating the most dangerous secondary in the NFL with cornerbacks Joey Porter Jr. and Darius Slay Jr., as well as safeties Minkah Fitzpatrick and DeShon Elliott. Will the Steelers pull the trigger on the blockbuster trade, or will the Dolphins corner be sent elsewhere?
