Jaffa Cake fans convinced the sweet treats taste different nowadays
McVities Jaffa Cakes have been around for almost 100 years – and some believe the recipe has evolved over the last century. So have you noticed any differences?
Jaffa Cake enthusiasts are adamant the sweet treats don't taste like they used to. The McVities favourites, which have been around for almost a century, have come out in plenty of different varieties over the years. These include limited edition options such as raspberry, strawberry, lemon and lime, plus blackcurrant.
The classic recipe is a sponge base with a layer of orange flavoured jam topped with dark chocolate, which is an absolutely delightful combination. However, when was the last time you picked up a packet?
After not eating Jaffa Cakes for a while, foodies are convinced they taste a lot different than they remember. On Reddit, one critic said they felt "dry".
Asking other customers if they had experienced the same, they asked: 'That 'spongey' bit? It's not the same spongey bit I remember growing up. It's like drywall. Well, drywall is a bit far, but it ain't no sponge. I had three, just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, and they were all the same.'
Apparently, they weren't the only Jaffa Cake fans to feel this way. Their pals "all said the same thing" and were convinced they're 'just not the same'.
Urging others to share their thoughts, they asked the social media forum: 'Has something changed? Have false memories allowed me to remember an absolutely supreme experience whilst munching on these delights? Or have they just decided to change the whole recipe to save a few quid?'
People were quick to share their opinions – with many convinced the product has evolved over the years. One Redditor wrote: 'I used to think as you get old your taste buds change or you grew bigger but no, they f***ed with the sizes & recipes.'
Another claimed: 'Off-brand Jaffa cakes have been superior for a few years now. Aldi ones are pretty good, M&S too'.
Meanwhile, someone else complained about the size of Jaffa Cakes. They wrote: 'They used to be 12 but now 10 in a packet. They have shrunk as I can easily get one in my gob as 20 odd years ago I would struggle. So that's 10 mouthfuls for me.'
One reason people may have noticed a change is that McVities made some tweaks a few years ago. Back in 2022, Jaffa Cakes were reduced from 5.5cm to 5cm across.
That wasn't all either – as the orange filling was retracted from 4cm to just 3cm. That's bound to have impacted the eating experience for some!

A disappointed Aussie has questioned if his favourite ice cream has shrunk in size after he bought a Magnum from his local petrol station. The man placed his hand beside the ice cream to give Aussies a size reference. 'Is this a special servo size or is this just how big a magnum ice cream is now?' he captioned a photo of the sweet treat on Reddit. 'Haven't had a Magnum ice cream in ages.
