Too many holes to plug: MS Dhoni reacts to CSK's torrid IPL 2025 campaign

India Today25-04-2025

MS Dhoni cut a dejected figure once again as Chennai Super Kings slumped to their fourth home defeat of the IPL 2025 season. On a sluggish surface at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, they were comfortably outclassed by SunRisers Hyderabad, failing to rise to the occasion with the bat. A change in personnel brought no respite, as CSK failed to click as a batting unit and couldn't even post a par total on a dewy evening in Chennai.advertisementThe Super Kings made three changes, continuing an uncharacteristically unsettled approach this season. Sam Curran replaced Jamie Overton, Dewald Brevis came in for Rachin Ravindra, and Deepak Hooda took the place of Vijay Shankar. Having now used 21 of the 25 players in their squad, CSK are still searching for a winning combination after nine matches. | CSK vs SRH - HIghlights |With seven defeats under their belt, CSK are now virtually out of the play-off race in IPL 2025.
When asked about the reasons behind CSK's struggles this season, Dhoni offered a characteristically blunt assessment."In a tournament like this, if you have just one or two areas to plug, it's manageable. But if the majority of your players aren't performing, it becomes very difficult."You can make a few changes here and there, but if most players are doing well, you can afford to give them a few more games. If that doesn't work, you move on. But if four players are underperforming at the same time, you're forced to make changes-you can't just keep going with the same team," he said.advertisementSeventeen-year-old Ayush Mhatre and debutant Dewald Brevis tried to inject some intent with their aggressive approach. Mhatre struck 30 off just 19 balls, while Brevis impressed with a 25-ball 42.However, the rest of the batting line-up-Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni and Shivam Dube included-failed to get going, as CSK kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The hosts were bundled out for just 154 in 19.5 overs. Notably, CSK have yet to breach the 160-run mark at home in IPL 2025, with their batting consistently faltering on the tricky Chepauk pitches.CSK NOT PUTTING ENOUGH RUNS: MS DHONIDhoni was candid about the need for a better batting display, urging his players to assess the conditions more smartly and adapt accordingly."We kept losing wickets. In the first innings, the wicket was slightly better, and 155 is not a justifiable score. It wasn't turning much. Yes, after the eighth or tenth over it became a bit two-paced for the pacers, but nothing too dramatic. I feel we could have added a few more runs."We're just not putting enough runs on the board, and that's essential these days. The game has evolved. I'm not saying you always need 180 or 200, but you have to assess conditions and then look to put up a competitive total," he added.advertisementWith little more than pride to play for, CSK will now look to plan for the future in their remaining fixtures. The five-time champions next face Punjab Kings at home on Wednesday, 30 April.Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! Rishabh Pant rejects Sunil Gavaskar's somersault request from the stand after completing twin centuries: 'Maybe later'

Jun 23, 2025 08:14 PM IST The legacy of Rishabh Pant continues to grow as the wicketkeeper batter completed his twin century in the ongoing Headingley Test between India and England at Leeds. Pant, who smashed 134 in the first innings, became just the second keeper-batter after Zimbabwe great Andy Flower to score back-to-back hundreds in a Test match, when he scored his 8th Test ton. Pant fell for 118 but had done his job as India swelled their lead over England to 293 and counting. Pant also joins Dilip Vengsarkar, Sachin Tendulkar, and only a select few to score four Test centuries in England. Not even Virat Kohli has that many. Sunil Gavaskar's somersault request for Rishabh Pant wasn't convincing enough(Screengrab) Surprisingly though, there was no somersault celebration from Pant this time around. He did it the first time in the IPL 2025, when he smashed only his second century in the history of the league during Lucknow Super Giants' last match of the season, and then brought it out again two days ago on Day 2 of the Headingley Test. So when Pant did not swing his body around, it caught a few by surprise, including the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. In fact, the Little Master requested Pant to pull it off, gesturing with his hands, but Pant refused to listen to Gavaskar, who, just 48 hours ago, replaced his infamous 'stupid, stupid, stupid' remark with 'superb, superb, superb'. "Maybe later," said Sanjay Manjrekar on air. Watch the video below: Unstoppable Rishabh Pant In the firing line for his flop show in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year – he had scored 255 runs from nine innings across five Tests – Pant has already scored 252, with four more matches left. Pant's carnage, along with KL Rahul's calm, ensured India push themselves to a stage from where they cannot lose the match. With an eye on setting England a huge total, they would rather fancy their chances of giving the hosts a scare when Jasprit Bumrah gets the ball in his hand.

Team India are 159 runs ahead at lunch on Day 4 with 7 wickets in hand. But skipper Ben Stokes received some good news with star speedster Jofra Archer taking the field in a County Championships match for Sussex against Durham on Monday. Archer is playing his first first-class match after a gap of 1501 days, since 2021, and bowled a spell of 4 overs for 11 runs with 2 maidens. Earlier, the Rajasthan Royals pacer walloped 31 off 34 balls for Sussex with 1 six and 3 fours as his side were bowled out for 361 after batting first. Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede was the pick of the bowlers for Durham, claiming 4/96. For Sussex, batter James Coles top-scored with 148 off 219 balls with 17 fours and 1 six while opener Daniel Hughes notched up 60. Stokes had revealed last week Archer's tremendous eagerness to play Test cricket. 'He's been absolutely desperate to put the white shirt back on,' said Stokes last Thursday ahead of the first Test at Leeds. 'He's had a torrid run with injuries, but he's managed a fair bit of white-ball cricket recently. The fact that we can now put a structure in place for his red-ball return is a great sign.'
