ENG vs IND: Sai Sudharsan first Indian batter in 14 years to bag duck in maiden Test knock

He walked in at No. 3 following KL Rahul's dismissal, which ended a solid opening partnership of 91 runs with Yashasvi Sudharsan appeared nervous at the crease, clearly eager to get off the mark. In his short stay, he was involved in a couple of hesitant calls with Jaiswal, attempting to steal quick singles by playing the ball late-signs of a debutant eager to make an on the fourth delivery of the final over before lunch, Ben Stokes bowled an inswinger that was never threatening the stumps. The ball started from leg stump and swung well outside the pads. Keen to get bat on ball, Sudharsan tried to flick it fine in search of a boundary. Instead, he got a faint edge, which was neatly taken by wicketkeeper Jamie looked dejected as he trudged back to the pavilion without troubling the young Tamil Nadu batter, who won the Orange Cap in IPL 2025 for the Gujarat Titans, thus joined an unwanted list of Indian players dismissed for a duck in their first innings in Test cricket. Normally, he wouldn't go for that. But he was tense-it's natural on debut. Let's give him some time."He's a confident cricketer. There's no need to criticise him harshly. These things happen, and I'm sure he'll come back stronger in the second innings. On debut, getting out down the leg side is just one of those things-there's not much a batter can do in that situation."India went to lunch at 92 for 2, having handed England a chance to claw their way back into the contest. Disappointment Galore! Sai Sudharsan Departs For Duck On Test Debut
Last Updated: Sai Sudharsan's Test debut for India vs England ended in disappointment with a four-ball duck by Ben Stokes on Day 1 of the Headingley Test. Star India batter Sai Sudharsan's Test debut didn't go as planned as he departed for a four-ball duck in India's first innings against England on Day 1 of the Headingley Test on Friday. The 23-year-old was outsmarted by England skipper Ben Stokes, as Sudharsan's nerves got the better of him. Coming in to bat after Brydon Carse had dismissed a well-set KL Rahul for 42 in the 25th over, a lot of eyes were on Sudharsan, who had won the purple cap in the recent IPL 2025 due to his stupendous run-scoring spree. Sudharsan was challenged first up as Carse's last delivery of the 25th over swung back into him. He defended well, and since it looked like a bat-first situation, England didn't go up for the review. The third delivery that Sudharsan faced, from Stokes, pitched down leg, but the English players did go up in an appeal. But on the next ball, the Indian youngster made a nervy blunder to draw an early close to his innings. It was a stupendous plan from England, and Sudharsan fell into it. Stokes put fielders all around the debutant to increase the pressure. The plan was to make him doubt the shot that he plays. Sudharsan knew there were a few men behind him and went for the flick, which was a soft one, but he managed an edge which Jamie Smith caught while diving to his right. Watch the video here: At lunch on Day 1, Yashasvi Jaiswal was batting on 42 off 74 deliveries with eight boundaries as the twin strikes took some sheen off a brilliant session for India. Rahul put on 91 runs for the first wicket with Jaiswal, making 42 from 78 deliveries with eight boundaries. First Published:

"Not Going To Be Easy...": Ravi Shastri Warns Shubman Gill Ahead Of Test Captaincy Debut
As India prepares to begin a new era in Test cricket under the leadership of Shubman Gill, former head coach Ravi Shastri has shared a few thoughtful words of advice for the young skipper. Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri urged Gill to stay patient and composed as he steps into one of the most challenging roles in world cricket - leading India in a five-match Test series in England. 'I think, take your time,' Shastri said, offering his guidance to the 25-year-old. 'It's not going to be easy. He's been asked to do a tough job - that is to captain India on a tour of England.' With veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recently announcing their retirement from the longest format, Gill has been handed the responsibility of leading a relatively young Indian side. The upcoming series, beginning on June 20 at Headingley, also marks India's first assignment in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Despite Gill's relatively modest record in red-ball cricket - 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05 in 32 Tests - Shastri remains optimistic. He believes the tour will serve as a vital phase in Gill's leadership journey. 'It's never easy,' Shastri continued, 'but I think he will learn from this exposure.' Shastri also reflected on Gill's recent leadership stint in the IPL 2025, where the youngster captained Gujarat Titans. While the team fell short in the Eliminator, Gill's calm and composed demeanour stood out to the former India coach. 'What I saw of him in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, he seemed very composed and calm. He's got a good temperament.' Gill, who has also been in impressive form in white-ball cricket this year, scored a half-century in India's recent intra-squad match in Beckenham, signalling his readiness for the challenge ahead. The Test series in England, however, presents a different kind of examination - one that has historically tested the technique and temperament of even India's most established players. The tour is also an opportunity for India to break their 17-year Test drought in England, with the last win coming in 2007 under Rahul Dravid's captaincy. Shastri concluded by highlighting the broader significance of the journey ahead for Gill. 'He's matured as an individual, he's got some young players around with him, and I think it's a learning curve as far as Shubman Gill goes.'

Sai Sudharsan Makes Test Debut for India in First Test vs England at Headingley
B. Sai Sudharsan will make his Test debut after being named in India's playing XI for the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, starting June 20 at Headingley. Cheteshwar Pujara presented Sudharsan with his Test cap ahead of the toss. With three ODI appearances and one T20I already under his belt, his Test debut completes the full set of international formats. Sudharsan has been a consistent force in white-ball cricket. He was the leading run-scorer in IPL 2025, winning the Orange Cap and cementing his reputation as one of India's brightest batting prospects. While his first-class average stands at a modest 39.93 from 49 innings, the selectors have backed his potential and long-term upside. That said, the last Indian top-order batter to have a sub-40 first-class average at the time of Test debut was Wookeri Raman, against West Indies in Chennai in 1987/88. What works in Sudharsan's favour is familiarity with English conditions — he featured in a few County Championship matches for Surrey during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. In five innings for Surrey, he averaged 35, including a century against Nottinghamshire last year — a knock that hinted at his adaptability in seaming conditions. Related Topics Sai Sudharsan
