‘We need to take risks': Thomas Frank promises to attack in bid to make Spurs ‘serial winners'

Yahoo2 days ago

Thomas Frank intends to build on Ange Postecoglou's Europa League triumph and turn Tottenham into 'serial winners'. The new manager described Postecoglou as a 'legend' as he considered how the Australian had ended the club's 17-year trophy drought with victory against Manchester United in Bilbao on 21 May. It was not enough to save him from the sack after a dismal Premier League season.
Frank, who has joined from Brentford on a three-year contract, acknowledged the barriers that his predecessor had broken down. But as he promised in his first interview at Spurs to take risks and play on the front foot, he made it clear that the goal was to create more memories by winning silverware.

Frank's comments, given to the club's website, came after the chair, Daniel Levy, said on Tuesday that he wanted to win the league and Champions League. Spurs' Europa League success has got them back into the Champions League.
'Huge congratulations to the club, to the team … huge congratulations to Ange,' Frank said. 'He will for ever be a legend at Tottenham. It's very important to understand that we all stand on the shoulders of others so I am going in on the foundations that Ange has built. I'm very humble about that and I'll do my very best to continue the great work he put in.
'But the feeling and excitement, the joy and happiness you could see in the fans' faces [after the Europa League win], the pictures you saw were … wow! Hopefully we can create more of those moments. That would be the ultimate dream to do that and build on that. Hey, no one can say they are not winners; the team and the players are winners. Now we need to do [our] best … to see whether we can be serial winners in the future.'

Frank talked about wanting to create 'magic' for the fans, undertaking a journey with them, making the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium a fortress. He also hit the right notes when he discussed how his team would play. 'The intention is to play aggressive, front-footed football,' he said.
'I know the ethos and the history of the club is massive on attacking football and there is so much attacking talent in the squad. I'm very, very big on principles … what we do in the final third in terms of creating chances, crosses, bring balls in the box, play [in] behind.
'I always say this one-liner: if you don't take risks, you also take risks. So it's important we take risks. Risk is you need to play forward. If you don't risk the ball, you can't create things. We need to be brave.
'For me, if they lose the ball by trying, it's never a problem. But if they don't work hard? I struggle more with that. That's my non-negotiable. We need to take risks. If we don't take risks, it's impossible to achieve something big.'

Virgil Van Dijk's: The Constant in Liverpool's Historic Success of Recent Years

Virgil van Dijk Remains the World's Best Defender Virgil van Dijk's brilliance has become so reliable that it now risks being taken for granted. While new Liverpool manager Arne Slot made headlines by winning the Premier League in his debut season, and Mohamed Salah dazzled once again, Van Dijk was the constant force holding everything together. His influence is quieter now in the wider football narrative, but it remains just as powerful on the pitch. Advertisement In his second season as Liverpool captain, Van Dijk stepped up following Jurgen Klopp's departure and filled the leadership void left by Jordan Henderson. He didn't just cope with the pressure, he excelled under it, guiding Liverpool to a league title with composure, consistency and class. Photo: IMAGO Rock at the Back Van Dijk made 49 appearances across all competitions, anchoring a defence that was often rotated due to injuries and tactical changes. He didn't just survive the chaos, he provided calm through it. While he had the odd slip, such as a mistake against West Ham, his responses were swift, often followed by commanding performances or crucial goals. Advertisement His presence changes Liverpool's entire defensive line. When he is missing, the team visibly suffers. His positioning, reading of the game and aerial dominance are unmatched, making him a truly irreplaceable figure in the squad. Passing Range and Leadership What often goes unnoticed is Van Dijk's incredible passing. His long diagonals to Salah, Diaz or Gakpo are not just clearance kicks, they are measured attacks in themselves. This level of precision turns defence into attack instantly, giving Liverpool a key weapon in transition. As captain, Van Dijk has brought poise and unity to the club's new era. He rallied the players and even urged fans to create a sea of red in support. He's not only a tactical leader, but an emotional one too. Recognition Long Overdue Despite his impact, Van Dijk has not been widely included in Player of the Season discussions. Much of that is due to Salah's consistent brilliance, but it's also a reflection of how fans become desensitised to greatness. Advertisement Van Dijk is not just still world-class — he's still the best in his position. As Liverpool prepare for their future under Slot, Van Dijk's new contract is a massive boost. He remains the foundation of the team and the perfect leader for this next chapter. This is an abridged version; the full article is available on our 'It Was Always… Liverpool' Substack page:

Ex-Premier League midfielder predicts Saints to 'struggle' under Still

FORMER Premier League midfielder David Dunn has predicted Saints will struggle in the Championship under new boss Will Still. Dunn, a one-time England international, believes new Southampton boss Still faces a real challenge in charge of the recently relegated side. Advertisement Saints are currently the second-favourites to win promotion from the Championship, behind Ipswich, who won 10 points more than them in the Premier League last season. Speaking to OLGB, Dunn said: 'I watched him on Monday Night Football a couple of months ago. He came across well. I think he's done well in his previous job. Will Still cut his teeth in Belgium before making a new for himself in French football. I think Southampton could struggle.' Saints won just 12 points in the Premier League last season, cycling through two managers before appointing Simon Rusk in interim charge until the end of the season. Belgian-born Still has never worked in English senior football, but joins Saints after guiding Lens to an eighth-place finish last season, missing out on Europe by five points. The 32 year old, who has signed a three-year deal, has set out to win promotion in his first season at the club.

Neymar: $262 million (222 million euros) Advertisement Paris Saint-Germain shattered the world-record transfer fee by signing the Brazil superstar from Barcelona in August 2017. It was more than double the outlay of Manchester United to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus for $116 million a year earlier. It remains the record transfer fee. ___ Kylian Mbappé: $216 million (180 million euros) A few weeks after buying Neymar, PSG also secured a loan deal for Mbappé — then the rising star of French soccer playing for Monaco — that included the option to make the move permanent in 2018. PSG did so, making it an outlay of nearly $500 million on two players. ___ Philippe Coutinho: $192 million (160 million euros) Advertisement Flush with cash after selling Neymar a year earlier, Barcelona spent most of it in a deal to buy Brazil playmaker Coutinho from Liverpool for a Spanish record fee. ___ Moises Caicedo: $146 million (115 million pounds) The Ecuador midfielder's move was previously the most expensive deal by a British club, with Chelsea buying him from Brighton in August 2023. ___ João Félix: $140 million (126 million euros) Atletico Madrid triggered a buyout clause in Félix's contract to sign the Portugal forward from Benfica in August 2019. ___ Jude Bellingham: $139 million (128.5 million euros) The England star got his big move to Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund in June 2023, for an initial up-front fee of 103 million euros plus add-ons linked to performance. Advertisement ___ Antoine Griezmann: $134 million (120 million euros) Atletico could afford to sign Félix after selling France forward Griezmann to Barcelona for a similar fee a few weeks earlier. ___ Neymar: $98 million (90 million euros) Outside from Europe, the biggest transfer deal also involved Neymar when he joined Al Hilal, a team in the Saudi Pro League, from Paris Saint-Germain in August 2023. That came at the height of Saudi Arabia's push to sign high-end soccer talent to ignite the oil-rich state's domestic league. ___ AP soccer: Steve Douglas, The Associated Press
