Eric Dane Speaks Out on ALS Diagnosis: 'I Don't Think This is The End of My Story'

Yahoo5 hours ago

Eric Dane sat down with Good Morning America's Diane Sawyer for what marks his first television interview since revealing his ALS diagnosis in April.
'I wake up every day and I'm immediately reminded that this is happening,' Dane tells Sawyer in a teaser clip posted by GMA on Thursday morning, to which Sawyer replies, 'It's not a dream.' Dane confirms that it is not a dream and he really is facing the brutal reality of ALS, which is often referred to as one of the most cruel diseases one can face.

The brief 30-second clip also finds Dane expressing optimism by saying, 'I don't think this is the end of my story. I don't feel like this is the end of me.' Judging by the teaser, it appears to be a powerful conversation as it shows Sawyer and Dane holding hands at one point, and Dane breaking down in tears at another. Some of the footage also features the two walking down the street on a sunny day.
When he revealed his diagnosis two months back, Dane said, 'I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.' It's unclear if he's already wrapped his role as Cal Jacobs for the third season of the critically acclaimed HBO Max series.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS and Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurological disease that is always fatal. It causes nerve cells to gradually break down and die, and eventually all muscles are affected, leading to full paralysis while the mind still is active. Life expectancy depends on the type of ALS one is diagnosed though the typical average is two to five years. While there is no cure, there have been recent medical advancements, including new medications, to fight the disease.
Sawyer's full interview with Dane is scheduled to air on Good Morning America at 7 a.m. ET on Monday, June 16.

Is Young and the Restless June 17 Playing ‘The Most Dangerous Game'?

In 1924, a short story called 'The Most Dangerous Game' was published. The movie version came in 1932. It was remade in 2022. Is The Young and the Restless June 17 episode about to give us the television version? In the 100-year-old tale, the story of a hunter who washes up on an island… only to become prey for a General who has gotten bored hunting big game animals and wants a bit more of a challenge. As in, a man-shaped one. Now, Jack (Peter Bergman), Diane (Susan Walters), Kyle (Michael Mealor), and Audra (Zuleyka Silver) were forced to navigate a maze (not unlike the one in 'The Shining,' but let's leave it to one movie reference per post) in order to get to the lunch where Victor (Eric Braeden), Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), Nick (Joshua Morrow), Sharon (Sharon Case), Billy (Jason Thompson), and Sally (Courtney Hope) are already waiting. Are they being fattened up? Like lambs to the slaughter, perhaps? MORE: See a sneak peek of what's happening this week on Y&R. The mysterious Aristotle Dumas is already watching his guests through closed-circuit TV. Why shouldn't we assume this is all a big game to him? One in which he's the predator… and our favorites from Genoa City are the prey? He wants to lull them into a false sense of security before he launches the final test — one where they all run for their lives as he stealthily tracks them. READ MORE: Find out what happens next on Y&R. So why not include Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) in the fun and games? She'd probably say it's because he recognized her brilliance from afar and knows that, in a battle of wits, she'll always come out on top. He's basically intimidated by her self-proclaimed genius. But we suspect it's simpler than that. Even a man who has hunted everything the earth has to offer doesn't want to hear her shrieking in indignation. She can stay where she is and drink her champagne. Dumas has more important fish to fry. Maybe literally.

‘Duke Nukem' Show Coming From Game Adaptation Honcho Adi Shankar

After helping get adaptations for Castlevania, Devil May Cry, and Far Cry onto Netflix, Adi Shankar has now set his sights on Duke Nukem. The well-known showrunner-executive producer recently told Esquire Magazine he bought the rights to the shooter franchise. He probably won't get to it for a while—he's got a second season of Devil May Cry to work on, plus adaptations for Assassin's Creed, PUBG, Hyper Light Drifter, and who knows what else—but he's already got an idea for what the potential series will be. 'It's a middle finger to everybody,' he said. 'When Duke blew up, a bunch of people sat around trying to turn it into a brand. It can't be made by a corporation, because the moment a corporation makes Duke Nukem, it's no longer Duke Nukem. I don't intend on having anyone tell me what to do on this one.' The original Duke Nukem was a 2D platformer released in 1991 from Apogee Software and 3D Realms. Later installments transitioned to first and third-person shooters, but each game puts Duke in fights against aliens or the military. Its last installment was 2011's Duke Nukem Forever, which came out after Borderlands creator Gearbox (which now owns the franchise) took over development duties with Triptych Games and Pirahna Games, and opened to pretty lousy reviews. The franchise hasn't been seen since, but over the years, there's been suggestions of a film adaptation, and the Cobra Kai creators are attached as of 2022. Who knows if Shankar's show means a Duke Nukem game is on the horizon, since Gearbox is currently on Borderlands 4 duty and his other adaptations haven't yet yielded new games for their respective source materials. But if the show ends up happening, it'll certainly be worth talking about, for better and worse. Want more io9 news?
