Duo charged with raping their relatives

Kota Kinabalu: Two men were charged separately with raping their own relatives in Penampang and Tuaran, last year. Both the men who appeared separately before Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
Advertisement In the first case, the 34-year-old man is accused of raping his 14 years and eight-month-old cousin at a house in a village in Penampang in July 2024. The man was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, on conviction. The court set July 16 for mention and the man was released on bail of RM6,000 in two local sureties with permanent address and job. Additional conditions were imposed on the man, namely to report to Penampang police station on the first day of every month until the disposal of his case, to surrender his passport, if any, to the court and not to disturb or contact any of the prosecution witnesses especially the alleged victim. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Bryan Francis appeared for the prosecution while the man was not represented. In the second case, the 24-year-old man allegedly raped his 16-year-old niece at 11pm in June 2024 at a house in a village in Tuaran. He was charged under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between eight and 30 years and whipping of at least 10 strokes, on conviction. His case would be mentioned back on July 17 and succeeded to obtain bail of RM6,000 in two local sureties as well as to report to the nearest police station once a month. Rare Irrawaddy dolphin found dead in illegal ray net off Kuala Kedah
ALOR SETAR: A rare Irrawaddy dolphin was found dead, tragically entangled in an illegal ray fishing net known locally as 'pukat pari' that was left behind by fishermen in the waters off Kuala Kedah yesterday. She added that the loss of even a single Irrawaddy dolphin has a major impact on the ecosystem, given its critically low population and elusive nature. Meanwhile, Noor Azreyanti said the latest seizure was the sixth involving ray nets in the Kuala Kedah maritime zone so far this year. 'The use of the nets not only affects the population of stingrays, which are benthic predators, but also disrupts the overall balance of the ecosystem if left unchecked,' she said. She also called on the public to report illegal fishing activities or suspicious activities at sea via the 999 emergency line or the Kuala Kedah maritime zone operations centre at 04-7310579.

Couple held for series of housebreaking, robbery cases since January
MELAKA: Police have arrested a couple suspected of involvement in seven housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka and neighbouring states since January. Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the unemployed couple, aged 24 and 31, were arrested in Kuala Kurau, Perak, on June 4. "On May 28, police received two reports involving housebreaking and robbery in the Melaka Tengah district, linked to the couple. "Their modus operandi included targeting homestays and stealing various electrical appliances and furniture," he said in a statement today. Initial investigations found they were involved in three housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka Tengah, and four others in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Various items were seized, including electrical appliances, furniture, a gold bracelet, two cars, five pawnshop receipts, and five mobile phones. The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and Section 392 for robbery. In a separate development, Christopher said a clothing dealer was arrested for allegedly firing a shot from an air pistol at Jalan Johor, Semabok, on June 8. "Following intelligence gathering and a public tip-off, the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Puchong, Selangor, on June 17. Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief.
