Five Tennessee roads remain closed six months after Helene as recovery continues
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — This week marks six months since Hurricane Helene devastated parts of East Tennessee and western North Carolina. While the majority of Tennessee roads have reopened, five sections remain closed.
The massive storm took lives, destroyed homes, damaged bridges, shut down part of I-40 between Tennessee and North Carolina, and damaged I-26 in Unicoi County. United States Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said this would 'be the most expensive emergency relief project that we have ever had in the country.'

During these six months, I-40 partially reopened. Of the 49 sections of state roads closed in the aftermath, 44 are back open, according to a Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesperson. Businesses have reopened, and park trails have been restored.
Yet, there is still so much left to do. Five road sections remain closed, according to TDOT, including the following:

Greene SR107 (bridge) estimated opening: June 23, 2025
Washington SR81 (bridge) estimated opening: June 23, 2025
Carter/Johnson SR159 estimated opening: August 31, 2025

Some people have said their FEMA checks have been stolen. Other people have had their insurance companies deny coverage on lost homes. The six months of struggle are reminiscent of Tennessee Governor Bill Lee's words in the aftermath of the disaster.
'Whether it's a loss of a family member, a loss home, the loss of water, the loss of employment… they're survivors,' Lee said. 'Tennesseans are survivors.'

There are several factors contributing to the e-tron's rapid depreciation. Firstly, the e-tron is an electric vehicle. EVs depreciate quickly due to advancements in technology, battery degradation concerns, and high initial prices despite fluctuating demand. Lack of charging infrastructure makes used electric vehicles less desirable than gas cars to some car buyers. Secondly, the e-tron in particular faces some issues regarding driving range. The 2019 e-tron had a total driving range of 204 miles as a brand-new model. An e-tron EV that has accumulated some mileage likely has lost some of its total driving range due to battery degradation. So, drivers with range anxiety may want to avoid the e-tron. Newer, affordable competitors with more driving range also make the EV less attractive from a value proposition standpoint. There are several Audi e-tron models listed on that can be shipped to different CarMax locations in the Volunteer State for affordable prices. The 2019 Audi e-tron produces 355 horsepower and 414 pound-feet of torque (which is good for an SUV of its size). It has a dual-screen display (10.1-inch upper screen, 8.8-inch lower screen). The Prestige trim comes standard with an adaptive air suspension, a panoramic sunroof, and ambient interior lighting. The electric SUV has plenty of standard features that are typically reserved for expensive luxury nameplates. It has "smooth acceleration, a spacious interior, and comfortable seats" according to a vehicle review by Edmunds. The Audi e-tron's biggest con is its lack of driving range (and battery degradation as a used model). If you have access to reliable home charging and nearby charging networks, it has a strong value proposition as a used electric vehicle under $30,000. Relics found as water drastically drops in beloved NC mountain lake. See photos
Water has dropped to its lowest level in a century at North Carolina's Lake Lure, revealing relics long hidden in the mud, photos show. Among the oddities: a 32-foot 'water taxi' and vehicle believed to be a Ford Model T. They have emerged as the 800-acre lake continues shrinking due to damaged caused in September by Hurricane Helene. Many of the finds have been documented on social media by the Lake Lure Dock Company, which calls them 'a haunting look into the past.' 'This is the first time the lake has been this low since it was first filled nearly a century ago,' company owner Jake Mohl told Fox News. 'We've worked on this lake for decades, and we're seeing things no one's laid eyes on in generations.' In some instances, he has been baffled by the discoveries, such as 'the forgotten set of concrete steps.' The set appeared in June, and a photo shows it was far from being accessible to people on the bank of the lake. 'Fully intact and leading to ... nowhere,' the company wrote in a June 17 post. 'These steps likely once belonged to a building or residence — a quiet reminder of what once stood before the water came.' In the case of a 32-foot wooden boat found in the mud, Mohl theorized it was intended to be a water taxi in the 1950s, Fox News reports. 'Complete with what appears to be an old 4-cylinder Ford flathead engine,' the company wrote of the boat. 'No telling how long it's been down there or what story it carried with it to the bottom, but it's a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the lake's hidden history.' The 'chilling' remains of a Ford Model T were found around the same time, after being frozen in place for a nearly century. The vehicles were introduced to the market in 1908 and remained in production until May 1927, Ford says. 'It doesn't seem to have simply rolled into the water. The way it lies — tipped on its side, parts stripped away — suggests it may have broken down long ago, and was salvaged and abandoned, left for the lake to eventually claim,' the dock company wrote. 'Now, nearly 100 years later, it resurfaces — a silent reminder of life, labor, and machinery from a bygone era.' Long-time residents of the area expect more to show up, based on folklore. 'There are a couple of old bridges on the lake bottom too,' Clint Calhoun wrote on Facebook. 'One is in Tryon Bay not far off shore from the Lodge on Lake Lure if I recall. It's mostly intact.' 'They flooded the town to create the lake,' Julee Bee posted. 'There are still houses, churches, graves, etc down there. People had to leave everything behind.' The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is lowering the water level by 30 feet to scrape out 376,000 tons of silt and sediment pushed into the lake by Hurricane Helene, the town said in a June 17 news release. 'The Lake is currently lower than it has ever been since it was built in the mid 1920's,' the town. 'This is an important step in the recovery process for Lake Lure. We are unable to specify the length of the drawdown period as this is dependent upon the sedimentation and debris removal process being overseen by the US Army Corps of Engineers.'

NHTSA revises exemption process for vehicles without driver controls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has streamlined its 'Part 555' exemption process, which permits manufacturers to sell up to 2,500 motor vehicles a year that do not fully comply with current Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced in a June 13 press release. The streamlined application process, the framework of which was announced in April, extends to commercial robotaxis and other autonomous vehicles built without steering wheels, pedals or mirrors, which is a requirement for all passenger vehicles. The revisions are designed to expand mobility options in the U.S. and foster innovation in the development of self-driving technology. The revised Part 555 exemption also includes internal changes at the NHTSA to expedite application processing time, improve transparency and increase engagement, which includes notifying companies of what to expect during the process. Dive Insight: In a letter to stakeholders announcing the updates, the NHTSA said the previous Part 555 exemption was intended for traditional vehicles and was not well suited for vehicles with autonomous driving capabilities. It added that the streamlined application process would expedite deployment of robotaxis and autonomous trucks carrying fright. The NHTSA anticipates that the changes will reduce application processing times for exempt vehicles from years to months. 'The Part 555 exemption process has been rightly criticized for taking years – bogging developers down in unnecessary red tape that makes it impossible to keep pace with the latest technologies,' Duffy said in a statement. 'We've streamlined this process to remove another barrier to transportation innovation in the United States, ensure American AV companies can out-compete international rivals, and maintain safety.' Although the changes allow manufacturers to sell up to 2,500 vehicles each year, companies still must demonstrate to the NHTSA that their vehicles provide an equivalent safety level as FMVSS compliant passenger vehicles and that the exemption is in the public interest, according to the release. The previous Part 555 exemption process for AVs hindered innovation and stifled progress, per the NHTSA, as deploying and testing these types of vehicles on public roads in the U.S. is a necessary safety step, especially for those intended to carry passengers. In 2020, the NHTSA granted one of the first exemptions to AV startup Nuro to deploy its compact R2, a low-speed, electric delivery vehicle which was not designed to carry passengers and could operate on sidewalks. In 2022, General Motors requested the NHTSA revise its Part 555 exemption for vehicles it planned to use for its former Cruise robotaxi service in San Francisco. The automaker sought to deploy a fleet of Chevrolet Bolt AVs built without steering wheels or pedals, as well as the multi-passenger Cruise Origin autonomous shuttle built in collaboration with Honda Motor Co. and not equipped with any human driver controls. GM has since abandoned its robotaxi plans and its subsidiary Cruise now develops autonomous driving technology for its passenger vehicles. 'This next step in NHTSA's AV Framework will advance innovation by supporting the commercial deployment of purpose-built automated vehicles that can satisfy safety requirements,' NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser said in the release. 'The agency continues working to modernize the FMVSS for automated vehicles, and in the meantime Part 555 exemptions will play an integral role in enabling the ongoing advancement of our domestic AV industry.' The NHTSA also amended its Standing General Order on Crash Reporting effective June 16 for vehicles equipped with advanced driver assistance systems and other autonomous driving technology. Among the changes, it requires that companies submit a report to the NHTSA within five days of any serious crashes with airbag deployment if a vehicle's automated driving system was engaged. The NHTSA's Part 555 exemption updates are supported by various trade groups, including the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, American Trucking Associations, Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, Intelligent Transportation Society of America and the Zero Emission Transportation Association. The group of companies sent a letter to Duffy in March urging that the agency to make policy changes to accelerate the deployment of AVs and help the U.S. remain a global leader in the technology.
