Canadian Grand Prix signs Formula One contract extension through 2035

MONTREAL – The Canadian Grand Prix is staying on the Formula One calendar until at least 2035.
Octane Racing Group — the Canadian GP promoter — and several government officials announced a four-year contract extension on Tuesday.
The race was previously under contract through 2031. An agreement signed until 2029 was extended two years after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the 2020 and 2021 editions.
Octane Racing Group president and CEO Jean-Philippe Paradis joined Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante, Quebec tourism minister Caroline Proulx and federal MP Carlos Leitão in a news conference on Île Notre-Dame on Tuesday.
The extension arrives after a successful Grand Prix last weekend, an important step for organizers after last year's fiasco sparked some speculation about whether Montreal would stay on the F1 calendar.
Congestion, flooding and ill-timed downtown patio inspections disrupted the 2024 edition and damaged the race's reputation.
Next year's Canadian GP is scheduled for May 24, moving back from its traditional June slot to reduce travel and environmental impact. The event will now take place following the Miami Grand Prix instead of being sandwiched between races in Europe.

The Canadian GP — set for its 55th edition next year — joined F1 in 1967 and first staged races in Bowmanville, Ont., and Mont-Tremblant, Que.
The event moved to Montreal in 1978, and hometown hero Gilles Villeneuve won the city's inaugural race. Initially called Circuit Île Notre-Dame, the track was renamed to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after the local icon's untimely death in 1982.
The Canadian GP gained significance as the only North American race on the F1 calendar for several years in the 1990s and 2000s. There are currently three stops in the United States and one in Mexico City.
Grand Prix weekend provides a major economic boon to Montreal. An announced 352,000 spectators attended this year's event over three days.

Devers homers against his former team to key 3-2 win for the Giants against the Red Sox

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rafael Devers hit his first home run for San Francisco against his former team on Saturday, and the Giants beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 just six days after the big trade between the teams. Devers was acquired from Boston on Sunday. He delivered his first long ball for the Giants in the third inning on Saturday after he went hitless in his first six at-bats in the series. Devers sent an opposite-field drive off Brayan Bello (3-2) over the left-field fence for a two-run shot that happened to be caught by a fan in a Red Sox T-shirt. Devers got loud cheers from the big crowd in San Francisco as he rounded the bases for his 216th career home run that gave San Francisco a 3-0 lead. Devers was traded by Boston less than two years into a 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension that he signed in 2023. Heliot Ramos also homered for the Giants, who won for just the second time in their last seven games. Landen Roupp (5-5) bounced back from a rough start last Saturday against the Dodgers, throwing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts to earn the win. Camilo Doval allowed two runs in the ninth before getting his 12th save in 15 chances. Boston had won seven of the last eight games. Key moment Boston scored twice in the ninth against Doval and had the tying run on second base with one out. But Doval got Marcelo Mayer and pinch-hitter Romy Gonzalez on groundouts to end the game. Up next RHP Luis Giolito (3-1, 3.74 ERA) will start for Boston against LHP Robbie Ray (8-2, 2.68 ERA). ___ AP MLB:

Thunder's Chet Holmgren has struggled in the NBA Finals. Can he bounce back in Game 7?

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Chet Holmgren hasn't quite been himself on offense during the NBA Finals. The Oklahoma City Thunder's versatile 7-foot-1 forward averaged 18 points per game on 57% shooting from the field in the Western Conference finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Those totals have dropped to 11.3 points on 35.3% shooting against the Indiana Pacers. In Game 6 of the finals, Holmgren scored just four points on 2-for-9 shooting as the Pacers rolled to a 108-91 win. He acknowledged afterward that he'll need to improve in the decisive Game 7 on Sunday in Oklahoma City. 'I personally, myself, could be better trying to help us get things going in the right way,' he said after Game 6. Holmgren hasn't panicked. He said a balanced approach to handling difficult games has served him well throughout his career. 'You can't obsess over it to the point where it has a negative effect,' he said. 'But you also can't just completely detach from it to the point where you don't care about it.' Holmgren has made just 11.8% of his 3-pointers against Indiana. He said he doesn't worry about numbers as much as he focuses on effort and mentality. 'I do everything I can — good or bad, win or loss — I do everything I can to be better and improve after each game,' he said. 'That doesn't guarantee anything, but that's kind of just the process that I've always had.' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle knows Holmgren is capable of doing damage. Holmgren had 20 points and 10 rebounds in Game 4 and 14 points and 15 rebounds in Game 5. 'He is a great young player, and he has had a lot of stretches where we have not dealt with him well,' Carlisle said. Bouncing back from a few bad games is nothing compared with recovering from a foot injury that cost him his entire first season in 2022-23 and a pelvic injury that cost him 50 games this season. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 'I wouldn't say I enjoyed the injuries, but other than that, I've pretty much enjoyed the whole ride,' Holmgren said. 'It's a beautiful thing, the easy parts, the hard parts, good parts, the bad parts, it's all part of it. I would say I enjoy it all.' After all that, he's one win from an NBA title in his second season of action. He is thankful to be in this position given how his season started. He's trying not to overthink the situation heading into Game 7. 'You have to take the emotions out of it, even though it's everything you dreamed of, and you just have to try and do what you can to continue to prepare how you've prepared all year,' he said. ___ AP NBA:
