The Indiana Fever suffered their fifth loss of the season, with head coach Stephanie White back at courtside after missing the previous matchup against Angel Reese's Chicago Sky, falling 77–58 to Brittney Griner's Atlanta Dream.

Speaking about the tough defeat, White said Atlanta's physical play disrupted Indiana's performance in the second half, and she also cited WNBA Player of the Month Allisha Gray as one of the other reasons.
"Allisha Gray had a great game. One of the Olympians we were talking about. She's had a great season too," She said.
"She's one of my favorite players in this league. I just think that she's incredibly talented. She's gotten better every year. She continues to just allow the game to come to her." White continued.

Gray put up 23 points on Tuesday, playing 33 minutes. She made one three-pointer and found the bottom of the net on four of her six free throws. White was left impressed by her playstyle.

"She's aggressive to the rim. Her three-point shooting is really good. Great scores get to the free-throw line. She does that. She uses her size well. She plays off of her teammates really well. She's just a tough matchup." White added.
Gray averages 20.4 points per game this season, with 5.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists. She adapted well to Karl Smesko's machinery and has been a pivotal figure in recent games.
Indiana missed two of their stars due to injury against Atlanta. Caitlin Clark, who is recovering from a left quad strain, and Sophie Cunningham, who is sidelined with a right ankle injury.

White announced that Clark could be back for the next game against the New York Liberty.

If you buy something through a link in this article, we may earn commission. Pricing and availability are subject to change. Back in February, the Indiana Fever acquired Sophie Cunningham and the No. 19 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft from the Phoenix Mercury in what ended up being a four-team trade. Given the wild events that unfolded in the closing seconds of the Fever's dominant 88-71 win over the Connecticut Sun on June 17, it seems like the deal for Cunningham is already paying off through just seven games played by the guard. Advertisement For a very quick refresher, Cunningham got into a scuffle with Sun guard Jacy Sheldon after a hard foul that ended with the Fever's new enforcer placing a grip on the back of Sheldon's head and neck while holding her ground amidst the growing chaos. And there's a perfectly good reason why Cunningham appeared to display not even a sliver of fear in that moment, given her accomplished, legendary background both as a karate-kicking child as well as the clutch role she ended up playing for her high school football team. Sophie Cunningham (L) of the Indiana Fever and Jacy Sheldon of the Connecticut Sun face off during an altercationr at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on June 17, 2025 in Indianapolis, the young age of six—seriously, just six-years-old—Cunningham amazingly became a black belt in taekwondo. Advertisement To put that in proper perspective, most children at the age of six are on the cusp of learning to read and, athletically, probably just hoping to kick the soccer ball somewhere in the vicinity of the opponent's goal rather than their own. The Missouri native would eventually end up serving as her high school football team's backup kicker after the starting kicker went down after suffering a torn ACL. The following clip not only includes footage of Cunningham successfully kicking an extra point, cleanly splitting the uprights, but also shows her receiving Homecoming Queen honors while wearing a football uniform, obviously. It's probably safe to say that taking on the role of balancing the scales and protecting a star teammate by dishing out a hard foul is basically an effortless task for Cunningham. Advertisement Looking back, everything Cunningham said in March, prior to the season, about having Clark's back and sticking up for her teammates now carries some serious, legitimate weight in a major way. "I want her [Caitlin Clark] to go do her thing and anything she needs from me, I'm gonna be here. But again, I think that's just the competitor that I am, I'm fierce, I'm sassy. I stick up for my teammates, I stick up for myself," Cunningham stated. "Sometimes, I think that it's okay to be feisty and to be yourself." Cunningham's popularity has understandably surged ever since the very moment the 28-year-old guard went after Jacy Sheldon in the name of protecting Caitlin Clark, with her No. 8 jersey proceeding to sell out on Fanatics by the following morning. Advertisement That No. 8 jersey has since been restocked in most sizes, all while Cunningham's fame continues to sky-rocket, with the seven-year WNBA veteran unofficially, or perhaps officially, being dubbed as Clark's "enforcer" and reaching borderline superhero status among Fever fans. Amber Cox, general manager of the Fever, certainly sounded like someone who knew exactly what the team would be getting based on her statement in February following the acquisition of Cunningham. "Sophie is a player that we have targeted for a while, and one that we believe is a perfect fit for the style we want to play," Cox said. "She is a fierce competitor, works incredibly hard on both ends of the floor and is one of the best shooters in our league. We are excited to add her to our squad." Up next for Cunningham and the Indiana Fever is a road game against the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, June 22, in a featured nationally televised game with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN. Dawn Staley Shows True Character With Comment On Caitlin Clark

Dawn Staley Shows True Character With Comment On Caitlin Clark originally appeared on The Spun. Dawn Staley is showing her true character with a comment on Caitlin Clark and her fans. The legendary South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball coach, who has led the program to three national championships, twice faced Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in the NCAA Tournament. Clark and the Hawkeyes pulled off an upset in 2023, advancing to the national title game, where they lost to LSU. Then, in 2024, Clark and Co. fell to Staley's Gamecocks in the national title game. Advertisement It would be understandable if Staley wasn't the biggest fan of Clark. However, that does not appear to be the case at all. Staley appeared on Kylie Kelce's "Not Gonna Lie" podcast this week. She opened up about her thoughts on Clark and the WNBA star's fan base. (Photo by Thien-An Truong/)Thien-An Truong/Staley made it clear that she was - and is - a very big fan of the Indiana Fever superstar. However, Staley made it clear that Clark is criticizable, too. "She's quite incredible, quite an anomaly when it comes to how many eyeballs she's bringing on the game," Staley said. "And the newness of those eyeballs — they only want her to do well. Only want you to speak very highly of her. Only, you know, want you to agree with what they agree with. And that's kind of hard." Advertisement Staley said that it's hard because, "we're critics to everyone that plays the game. We're critics. It is part of the fabric of sports. It's part of athletics. It's the competition. That's what we do." It's not easy for someone like Staley to be so honest about Clark, given the discussions surrounding the Indiana Fever star. However, she made sure to let her feelings on Clark be known. Staley understands just how dynamic Clark is, too. "For me, the most dangerous thing of Caitlin Clark is her passing ability," she said. "Her ability to make other people better, and her ability to have other people's production along with her production. That's how you win." Advertisement Clark is as good of a shooter as women's basketball has ever seen, but Staley thinks her passing is what makes her most dangerous. Staley could face some criticism for her comments, though she's standing by them. Caitlin Clark's shocking cold streak continues as Fever crumble in the fourth quarter to Aces

Caitlin Clark's shooting slump continued in the Indiana Fever's loss to the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, 89-81. Clark went 7-of-20 from the field with 4-of-4 made from the free throw line for a total 19 points, but she was just 1-of-10 from three-point territory. Combined with her 0-of-7 from beyond the arc in the loss to the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday night, Clark is an uncharacteristic 1-of-17 from three in her last two games. But the Fever were leading throughout this game, heading into the fourth quarter with a 61-58 advantage. However, the Aces, led by three-time league MVP A'ja Wilson and her 24 points for the game, started to take over on their home court in crunch time. Teamed up with Jackie Young (19 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals) and Chelsea Gray (18 points, three rebounds, three assists), Wilson and the Aces outscored the Fever 31-20 in the fourth quarter to run away with the victory. While Clark was struggling with her jumper in this game, the Fever were seeing great contributions from the game's leading scorer, Aliyah Boston, who had 26 points on 12-of-19 shooting, and Kelsey Mitchell, who had a big chunk of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to keep Indiana in the game. But after Mitchell's three-pointer tied things at 69 apiece with five minutes to play, the Aces strapped in and started to pull away, thanks to some key baskets from Young, Wilson and Gray. Since Clark's 20-point game in the win over Connecticut, a game that got super-contentious between both sides, with Clark getting poked in the eye and shoved to the ground at one point, she hasn't shot well, and the Fever haven't been able to come away with a win on this West Coast trip. Granted, Clark has played in just eight of Indiana's 13 games this season due to injury. This is her fourth game back, and she shot very well in the first two, which were wins over the New York Liberty and Sun. Of course, Clark, even as good of a shooter as she can be, can fall into a slump every now and then. But once again, the Fever weren't able to overcome those missed shots. The West Coast schedule continues with a final game against the Seattle Storm, winners of back-to-back games entering Sunday, on Tuesday before the Fever head back home.
