Indiana Fever Make Caitlin Clark Announcement in Game Against Valkyries
Indiana Fever Make Caitlin Clark Announcement in Game Against Valkyries originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark is one of the WNBA's best distributors, setting the single-game record for assists during her rookie season and earning some praise from her team after dropping a dime in their clash against the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday. Advertisement The team shared praise for Clark's tight quarters pass to a driving Natasha Howard during the third quarter of Thursday's game. Howard took Clark's pass and finished strong, scoring and drawing a foul to extend Indiana's lead to 10 points. The Fever shared a replay of the pass in a post on X, announcing that Clark had the State Farm Assist of the Game. The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year has already filled her season with milestones, becoming the first player in league history to record 100+ points, 30+ assists and 30+ rebounds through her first five games of the season. She also became the first WNBA player to record back-to-back games of 20+ points and 10+ assists. Clark helped pick up the slack on Thursday in the absence of Fever coach Stephanie White, who missed the game due to personal reasons. Assistant coach Austin Kelly took over against the Valkyries, saying the team was ready to rally together. Advertisement "It's going to be the same. I think we are an extension of each other," Kelly said Thursday via Kendra Andrews of ESPN. "The message is still the same that we talk about in the locker room: playing for each other, getting it done on the defensive end and then having that help fuel us on the offensive end. But the vibes are good." Indiana Fever Assistant Issues Statement on Stephanie White's Sudden Absence
Indiana Fever Assistant Issues Statement on Stephanie White's Sudden Absence originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever were dealt a significant blow ahead of their game against the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday. This came in the form of head coach Stephanie White having to leave the team to deal with a personal matter, which means that she won't be able to coach the Fever in Thursday's contest. Advertisement Stepping in for White is assistant coach Austin Kelly, who addressed the issue during his pregame press conference. Kelly, however, did not provide any details on White's situation, instead opting to focus on how the Fever are reacting to the sudden turn of events. "Steph's got some personal stuff going on," Kelly said. "... It's kinda business as usual. (I'm) just stepping in. Same message. Our team understands that." Kelly made it clear, however, that despite White's absence, the team has kept its eye on the goal. "This group's focused," he said. "We're refocused. It's our first West Coast trip of the year. We're focused on Golden State right now, and come to play, we're ready." The Fever did not reveal the nature of White's personal leave. However, this is not the first time that White has missed a game due to personal reasons. The first-year Fever shot-caller was also unable to coach her team on June 7 in their game against the Chicago Sky. Advertisement It is worth noting that White's partner, ESPN sportscaster Lisa Salters, has also already missed three games of the NBA Finals due to a "personal matter." Stephanie White's Behavior Insider Fever Locker Room is Turning Heads
Stephanie White's Behavior Insider Fever Locker Room is Turning Heads originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The vibes inside the Indiana Fever locker room appear to be pretty immaculate of late. This comes as no surprise, considering how this team is coming off arguably their biggest win of the season on Saturday after taking down the defending champions, the New York Liberty, 102-88. Advertisement On Monday, All-Star forward Aliyah Boston submitted video evidence proving just how much fun the players are having right now that even head coach Stephanie White decided to join in on the action. Boston's video, which she posted on her Instagram stories, shows the 6-foot-5 forward-center dancing with teammate Sydney Colson. The big highlight of the video, however, is Coach White lip syncing the song and busting out her dance moves as well. While Boston and Colson's moves were admirable, it was White's antics that stole the show for the fans on social media. "aliyah saying it was steph's idea lmfao," a comment on X read. Advertisement "How many coaches would even let their players convince them to do something like this??? Coach White is a player coach. I ❤️ The Fever!" another said. "they got coach before caitlin😭" a user wrote. "They can never make me dislike our coach," declared a fan. "Y'all sure Steph lost the locker room? 😭😭😭😭" asked another. White is currently in her first season coaching the Fever, but based on this video alone, it appears that she's already made a strong connection with her players. Her relationship with her squad will, without a doubt, play a crucial role in this team's quest for a championship this season. Caitlin Clark's WNBA Coach Is Stepping Away From Team
Caitlin Clark's WNBA Coach Is Stepping Away From Team originally appeared on The Spun. As if this week couldn't get any crazier for the WNBA right now, the head coach of Caitlin Clark's team is suddenly stepping away. Advertisement On Thursday, the Indiana Fever announced that head coach Stephanie White will be stepping away ahead of tonight's game against the Golden State Valkyries to attend to "a personal matter." White is in her second stint with the Fever, having previously coached the team from 2011 to 2016, first as an assistant and then as a head coach. In her absence, Austin Kelly will serve as acting head coach and was in charge of Thursday's shootaround. Kelly has been one of White's top assistants since they worked together on the Connecticut Sun. "It's going to be the same. I think we are an extension of each other," Kelly told reporters, via ESPN's Kendra Andrews. "The message is still the same that we talk about in the locker room: playing for each other, getting it done on the defensive end and then having that help fuel us on the offensive end. But the vibes are good." The timing of White's absence isn't great as the Fever are beginning a glut of games and a lengthy West Coast trip. They're currently playing five games in just eight days with a three-game trip out west starting today and ending next Tuesday. Advertisement "We're just trying to manage everything within the game and then we're going to put a lot on them to get treatment in between games," Kelly explained. "We're here, Vegas, Seattle, then back home. It's about us taking care of business on the floor, first and foremost, and looking for opportunities throughout the game to manage those minutes." (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images Given how suddenly Stephanie White is stepping away we can only hope that whatever it is isn't something serious. As for the team, White has led them to a 6-5 start on the season. Last year they didn't get above .500 until the 33rd game of the year. They never rose more than two games above .500 at any point last year and they'd like to change that to be sure. Advertisement How will Caitlin Clark respond to her new interim head coach? Caitlin Clark eager to move forward after Indiana's scuffle with Sun
SAN FRANCISCO — Caitlin Clark has no interest in rehashing Indiana's physical, testy win against Connecticut when she was shoved to the floor by Marina Mabrey. Mabrey's hit on Clark in Tuesday night's game was upgraded to a flagrant 2 on Wednesday. 'I think Steph (Fever coach Stephanie White ) talked about it plenty after the last game and it is what it is, you move on,' Clark said Thursday before playing the Golden State Valkyries in her first visit to San Francisco. 'My focus is just on tonight.'
