Jha's letter, which followed a meeting of the district disaster management authority (DDMA) on Friday, directed the PSU to take up urgent repairs after a portion of the dam was found to be collapsed and a few radial gates were out of order. Jha, during his inspection, also noted that the equipment used for measuring water levels were not working properly. The inspection came after a bout of heavy rain which battered Jharkhand and led to a rise of water levels in the reservoir, which is built over Garga, a tributary of Damodar, and provides water to the BSL plant and its township 12 kilometres away.
"Given the possibility of further heavy rainfall, the current condition is a recipe for disaster," a senior district official said, requesting anonymity.
Jha's letter, officials said, invoked various provisions of the Disaster Management Act of 2005. "A committee will be formed by BSL to oversee all necessary repair and safety actions within one week," said DC. The district administration has directed that any rise in water levels to dangerous thresholds must be immediately communicated to local administrative authorities.
Acting on the direction, BSL has now begun making public announcements in all low-lying areas of Garga river.
BSL's chief of communication, Manikant Dhan, said, "We have started alerting people by making announcements to those living in low lying areas of Garga river." With 10 radial gates being opened by Tenughat Dam, water level has increased in Damodar River.

Konkan Railway launches full-fledged monsoon action plan for smooth travel of passengers

The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has increased its monsoon preparedness to provide secure and uninterrupted travel for passengers, preparing for heavy rains along the Konkan coast. The 740-km Konkan railway track is known for its picturesque but difficult terrain, making it vulnerable to landslides, soil erosion, and waterlogging during monsoon. To confront all such challenges head-on, KRCL has initiated a full-fledged monsoon action plan with the safety of infrastructure, real-time surveillance, and emergency preparedness as the focus. 'The largest relief to passengers is that services will be run without any disruption even in the midst of heavy rainfall — thanks to advanced planning, enhanced safety systems, and increased patrolling,' said Santosh Kumar Jha, chairman and managing director of Konkan Railway on Tuesday. This year, the monsoon schedule will remain in force from June 15 to October 20 with modified sectional speeds to factor in weather-related hazards. To increase security, 636 trained staff are deputed for continuous patrolling at the infamous and weak points. Rail Maintenance Vehicles (RMVs), accident relief trains, and medical teams have been placed at strategic points covering major stations such as Ratnagiri, Verna, Madgaon, and Udupi. According to officials, rescue equipment and staff can be mobilised in the event of any disruption within minutes. Konkan Railway Gears Up for Monsoon-2025. — Konkan Railway (@KonkanRailway) June 3, 2025 'One of the most important initiatives implemented this year was the successful installation of flood warning systems at large rivers and viaducts. These alert the railway personnel when water levels reach hazardous points, enabling timely stoppages and avoiding accidents,' Jha added. Anemometers have also been installed on bridges to measure wind speeds, which can be dangerous for train movement. Passengers are also guaranteed by the KRCL of uninterrupted communication assistance. Control rooms and walkie-talkies are all connected with high-powered VHF radio sets, mobile phones, and satellite phones. Emergency Communication (EMC) outlets are placed each kilometre for field personnel to report emergencies immediately. To prevent landslides and boulder falls, major drainage and slope stabilisation works have already been completed. According to officials, these measures have significantly reduced track disruptions during monsoon over the last decade. 'For real-time updates, passengers are advised to visit the KRCL website or call the 139 helpline. With 24×7 control rooms and daily coordination with the India Meteorological Department, KRCL remains committed to passenger safety and convenience. With these preparations on hand, Konkan Railway is ready to provide a safe and picturesque ride even during the dangerous rain,' said a KRCL spokesperson.

Vigil continues as heavy rain hits normal life in Kozhikode

Heavy rain continues to disrupt normal life in Kozhikode on Wednesday (May 28, 2025) amid heightened vigil by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and village-level rescue squads. Arrangements were made to prepare additional relief camps in landslide-prone areas with the support of local administrators and Revenue department squads. 'The village officers in upland areas are closely monitoring the situation. In case of any emergency, affected families will be shifted to the relief camps. Areas where landslides occurred during previous monsoon seasons will be kept under continuous watch,' said a senior Revenue department officer from Vadakara. He added the village officers and local administrators had already reviewed preparedness and the arrangements to open relief camps if an emergency arises. The DDMA has already audited the safety measures taken to protect people living in the vulnerable coastal areas of the district. Fishermen residing near zones previously affected by sea erosion have been asked to relocate to safer locations. Some families have voluntarily moved in response to the cautionary messages. Revenue department squads have also circulated cautionary messages to prevent incidents of electrocution and drowning in the wake of the strengthening monsoon and flooding. Most water tourism destinations remain shut in the upland areas of Kozhikode as a precautionary measure. Entry will also be restricted at beach tourism destinations following the rough weather alert. On Wednesday, the India Meteorological department (IMD) issued fresh lightning alert. It urged the public to use the 'Damini' lightning alert mobile application for instant updates. Instructions were also issued to discourage outdoor entertainment activities during lightning. Domestic animals should not be allowed to graze in open fields, the IMD communication said. Within the last four days, several local bodies convened emergency meetings to discuss disaster management activities and priority areas. Local body members presented details of vulnerable locations during the meetings, and the requirements were sent to the DDMA for consideration. Meanwhile, the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Vilangad, which experienced several destructive landslides during the last monsoon season. The protesters alleged that around 30 affected families were yet to receive their rightful compensation, citing laxity on the part of the State government.
