Konkan Railway launches full-fledged monsoon action plan for smooth travel of passengers
The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has increased its monsoon preparedness to provide secure and uninterrupted travel for passengers, preparing for heavy rains along the Konkan coast. The 740-km Konkan railway track is known for its picturesque but difficult terrain, making it vulnerable to landslides, soil erosion, and waterlogging during monsoon.
To confront all such challenges head-on, KRCL has initiated a full-fledged monsoon action plan with the safety of infrastructure, real-time surveillance, and emergency preparedness as the focus.
'The largest relief to passengers is that services will be run without any disruption even in the midst of heavy rainfall — thanks to advanced planning, enhanced safety systems, and increased patrolling,' said Santosh Kumar Jha, chairman and managing director of Konkan Railway on Tuesday.
This year, the monsoon schedule will remain in force from June 15 to October 20 with modified sectional speeds to factor in weather-related hazards.
To increase security, 636 trained staff are deputed for continuous patrolling at the infamous and weak points. Rail Maintenance Vehicles (RMVs), accident relief trains, and medical teams have been placed at strategic points covering major stations such as Ratnagiri, Verna, Madgaon, and Udupi.
According to officials, rescue equipment and staff can be mobilised in the event of any disruption within minutes.

'One of the most important initiatives implemented this year was the successful installation of flood warning systems at large rivers and viaducts. These alert the railway personnel when water levels reach hazardous points, enabling timely stoppages and avoiding accidents,' Jha added. Anemometers have also been installed on bridges to measure wind speeds, which can be dangerous for train movement.
Passengers are also guaranteed by the KRCL of uninterrupted communication assistance. Control rooms and walkie-talkies are all connected with high-powered VHF radio sets, mobile phones, and satellite phones. Emergency Communication (EMC) outlets are placed each kilometre for field personnel to report emergencies immediately.
To prevent landslides and boulder falls, major drainage and slope stabilisation works have already been completed. According to officials, these measures have significantly reduced track disruptions during monsoon over the last decade.
'For real-time updates, passengers are advised to visit the KRCL website or call the 139 helpline. With 24×7 control rooms and daily coordination with the India Meteorological Department, KRCL remains committed to passenger safety and convenience. With these preparations on hand, Konkan Railway is ready to provide a safe and picturesque ride even during the dangerous rain,' said a KRCL spokesperson.

Take up urgent repair, maintenance of Garga dam: DC to BSL officials
Bokaro: The district administration has asked the management of Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL) to take up urgent repairs of Garga Dam a day after deputy commissioner (DC) Ajay Nath Jha found serious structural damages in the reservoir during an inspection on Thursday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Jha's letter, which followed a meeting of the district disaster management authority (DDMA) on Friday, directed the PSU to take up urgent repairs after a portion of the dam was found to be collapsed and a few radial gates were out of order. Jha, during his inspection, also noted that the equipment used for measuring water levels were not working properly. The inspection came after a bout of heavy rain which battered Jharkhand and led to a rise of water levels in the reservoir, which is built over Garga, a tributary of Damodar, and provides water to the BSL plant and its township 12 kilometres away. "Given the possibility of further heavy rainfall, the current condition is a recipe for disaster," a senior district official said, requesting anonymity. Jha's letter, officials said, invoked various provisions of the Disaster Management Act of 2005. "A committee will be formed by BSL to oversee all necessary repair and safety actions within one week," said DC. The district administration has directed that any rise in water levels to dangerous thresholds must be immediately communicated to local administrative authorities. Acting on the direction, BSL has now begun making public announcements in all low-lying areas of Garga river. BSL's chief of communication, Manikant Dhan, said, "We have started alerting people by making announcements to those living in low lying areas of Garga river." With 10 radial gates being opened by Tenughat Dam, water level has increased in Damodar River.

Beat the Heat for rupees 29: Eastern Railway to Launch Budget Air-Conditioned Suburban Train Service
(Written by Debasmita Chowdhury) The Eastern Railway zone is running trials for air-conditioned suburban train services which officials said will be offered at significantly low fares. It has received its first AC EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) train manufactured at Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, which has been deployed to the Sealdah Division for testing and trial runs. A second AC EMU rake is expected to arrive shortly at the Eastern Railway Jurisdiction. Officials say that the inaugural service, which is to be operated on the Sealdah-Ranaghat route once the trials are concluded, will offer competitive fares of Rs 29 for journeys up to 10 km and Rs 37 for distances of 11-15 km. Monthly season tickets are priced at Rs 590 and Rs 780 respectively. Dr Uday Shankar Jha, Principal Chief Commercial Manager, Eastern Railway, said, 'It is a matter of great pride that the eastern part of the country, Eastern Railway, is taking the lead to introduce ACAMU services.' He stated that the air-conditioned coaches would provide relief from 'extreme heat, extreme rush, and so many other related discomforts' that suburban passengers currently face. Jha also said, 'Initially, it is believed that AC travel will be very costly, but Indian Railways has introduced a fair scheme which is much more competitive and in comparison to roadways, it is almost 10 times cheaper'. The 12-coach trains will feature stainless steel construction with end-to-end connectivity through sealed vestibule gangways, allowing free movement between compartments. Each coach has four electrically operated sliding doors per side controlled by drivers, three-seater stainless steel seats, and enhanced air circulation systems for approximately 1,100 passengers. Additional amenities include CCTV surveillance, wear-resistant rubber flooring, aluminium extruded modular luggage racks, GPS-based passenger information displays, and large double-sealed windows to enhance the comfort of the passengers. 'Passengers will be able to commute from their home to their office in a pleasant condition and even carry out office work during travel due to better seating and air circulation, hence getting a double benefit,' said Jha. Eastern Railway officials indicate that the service will meet growing suburban passenger demands while modernising rail travel in the Kolkata metropolitan area at a very affordable price. Commercial operations will begin after completion of the current testing and trial runs.

Sr cop starts free online platform to help engg & medical aspirants
1 2 Ranchi: Medical and engineering aspirants who are unable to join expensive coaching classes can now receive free and high-quality guidance in physics and mathematics — considered the two toughest subjects of entrance examinations — through an online platform. Thanks to DIG of the state criminal investigation department, Chandan Kumar Jha, who with his friend Ajit Kumar, both graduates from the National Institute of Technology Calicut, have recently rolled out a digital initiative on YouTube titled EduCop — Education and Cop to coach the aspirants. Within days of its launch, around 1,500 students joined the YouTube channel. Jha and Kumar are uploading one video each on mathematics and physics respectively every day except for Sundays. Besides, they have also launched WhatsApp and Telegram channels to provide study materials, homework, and access to recorded sessions. Jha, who also cracked the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination and the Combined Aptitude Test before qualifying as an IPS officer in 2011, said, "Since my posting as SP Gumla in 2017, I started teaching students whenever I could manage a few hours. The exercise continued during my postings in other districts like Bokaro. The online platform is aimed at reaching out to the maximum number of students. Our focus is mainly on economically weaker sections of society so that no dream is lost for lack of resources." Jha said that every day after returning from the office, he brushes up on a topic with self-study and then uploads a video lecture on EduCop. He said that the channel encourages interactive learning, allowing students to post queries in the comments section or email their doubts. "Each video is accompanied by assignments for reinforcement of concepts," he said. Notably, Jha's friend Kumar has 11 years of teaching experience. Their educational initiative is also aimed at preparing students for NDA and various state-level engineering entrance examinations, he said.
