Beaufort County Sheriffs Office talks boating safety ahead of Memorial Day
WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Not only is May 17-23 National Safe Boating Week but Memorial Day weekend is around the corner and Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is making sure people are staying safe out on the water.
'It's the river, It's not the ocean, but we got 130 square miles of water in this county. A lot of people out on the boats, people from out of town that come,' Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Captain Kasey Neal said. 'With that said, people get out in the water, people start drinking, speeding, things like that. Accidents do happen.'
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has a new safety boat they got in August of 2024 through a grant.
'This gives us the ability to get out here and respond to maybe someone who's just fallen overboard, maybe has gone unconscious, maybe is skiing and hit a log here, which is popular in the Tar River, Pamlico River,' Beaufort County Sheriff Scott Hammonds said. 'We have injuries and we just want to be able to be another asset to respond.'
Capt. Kasey Neal said just last week officials rescued a man who fell off his boat in Belhaven.
'It could've been avoided. So, when you have a life jacket on, or if you have a kill switch on the boat, especially with life jacket, we've been able to locate that person a lot, lot quicker. So, I don't like things that are avoidable,' Capt. Neal said.
Memorial Day weekend is a big weekend for people to go out on the boat with friends and family.
'Alcohol and boating is not the combination. You want to be cold out here on the waterfront, operating on the river,' Sheriff Hammonds said. 'The tragedy of that is injury or death and it is an experience that is thoughtless and reckless.'

Ruidoso looks back on the impact of the South Fork and Salt Fires
RUIDOSO, N.M. (KRQE) – One year ago, fear and panic struck Ruidoso as a wildfire exploded. The entire village packed up what they could and left, with many coming back to nothing. The South Fork and Salt Fires left two dead, thousands of homes destroyed, and a long road to recovery. 'We were evacuated for a week and a half. Didn't know what was going on with the fires. Didn't even know if we still had a building left,' said Hunter. On June 17, 2024, flames spread through the village quickly. The South Fork and Salt Fires burned more than 25,000 acres and 1,400 structures, many of them homes. After that came burn scar flooding. Hunter, owner of A Quilting Stituation' in Alto, said business has been slow the past year. But it's given her the opportunity to be there for the community in a new way. 'We got to hear a lot of stories of a lot of people coming here of people who lost their homes from either the fire or the flood…it just breaks your heart.' The Village of Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford remembered the heartache. 'So that was a big day, a lot of devastation,' said Mayor Crawford. But when the worst of it passed, he pushed forward. 'But it was setting up those avenues of how do we help people get back to normal or whatever that new normal was going to look like?' said Mayor Crawford. Another loss came when tourism took a hit during the height of the summer season. 'That's where most of the businesses make the majority of their money annually,' said Mayor Crawford. He's reminding people that the popular tourist town is open for business. 'We've been doing a lot of marketing and advertising for the community to say 'hey, we're open, come back and see us. Tourism is our industry,' said Mayor Crawford. A lot of work has been done from de-silting the river, cleaning out and replacing culverts, removing debris, deepening the river and runoff channels, but the work isn't over. 'Whenever you have a tragedy like this you see neighbors coming together you see people helping out one another,' said Hunter. While the village has rebuilt, there is still the fear of something like the South Fork and Salt Fires happening again. 'You see smoke, and a chill fear goes through you,' said Hunter. Tuesday night, the Village of Ruidoso held an event designed to honor those impacted by the fires. Defense attorney for suspect in Aliza Sherman's murder hints at strategy: I-Team
CLEVELAND (WJW) – The accused killer of Aliza Sherman was in court on Tuesday for his first pretrial and his attorney is now hinting on plans to fight the charges. Gregory Moore, 51, is accused of killing Sherman in 2013. Her murder went unsolved for 12 years. Moore was indicted on several charges, including aggravated murder, on May 2. His defense attorney, Jon Paul Rion, is questioning why prosecutors are filing the charges now. 'The delay in this case is of concern,' Rion said. 'It is not clear if there is any new evidence.' What is the Prenatal Equal Protection Act? New bill would effectively ban abortion in Ohio Prosecutors allege the murder happened because Moore was not prepared to take her case to trial. Prosecutors have also said there is technology available now that was not available more than a decade ago when the murder happened. 'You have a due process right to have a trial within a reasonable period of time, when all the witnesses and evidence are available for both sides,' Rion said. 'If there are material witnesses or other evidence no longer in existence that could adversely affect the defendant, in this case Greg Moore, the court has to look if it's even fair to have a trial.' Cleveland Clinic to extend hours for surgeries, specialty appointments at many NE Ohio locations Sherman's estranged husband died last year. Prosecutor's have said he was not a suspect in the case. Moore remains jailed on a $2 million bond but his attorney said he may file a motion asking for a bond reduction. Moore is due back in court next month. His trial date has been set for March 30.
