These New Yorkers are bringing back Pinkster, which was outlawed in the 1800s. Juneteenth will be marked on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Juneteenth commemorates the day — June 19, 1865 — when federal soldiers arrived in Galveston to take control of Texas and ensure the slaves were freed per the Emancipation Proclamation. It's known as America's Second Independence Day, and it's celebrated today, June 19. Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. It's the longest-running African American holiday, and it became a federal holiday a few years ago. Juneteenth celebrations across the High Desert will include food, music, dancing, art and other activities. Here's what to know about the holiday. Is Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2025? Yes, Juneteenth is a federal holiday in 2025, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. It is one of 11 federal holidays observed every year. The others are: New Year's Day Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Washington's Birthday/Presidents Day Memorial Day July 4 Labor Day Columbus Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving Christmas Day When is Juneteenth observed in 2025? Juneteenth will be marked on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Unlike other federal holidays, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving, which are observed on a specific day of the week, Juneteenth is celebrated on the actual day. What does Juneteenth celebrate? Juneteenth commemorates the day — June 19, 1865 — when federal soldiers arrived in Galveston to take control of Texas and ensure the slaves were freed per the Emancipation Proclamation, according to the History Channel. Juneteenth — short for June nineteenth — marks the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. Why is it called Juneteenth? Juneteenth is a portmanteau of June 19, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston. It became known as "Juneteenth" by the newly freed slaves of Texas, according to the National Museum of African American History & Culture at the Smithsonian. When did Abraham Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation? President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. But its effect was limited, according to the National Archives. It only applied to states that seceded during the Civil War, leaving slavery intact for slave states that stayed with the Union. It also could not be enforced until Confederate states were under Union control, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Therefore, it took until June 19, 1865, for slaves in Texas to be freed. Slavery in America was formally abolished with the 13th Amendment, which was ratified Dec. 6, 1865. When did Juneteenth become a federal holiday? Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. President Joe Biden signed legislation on June 17, 2021, according to USA TODAY, after Congress passed The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act that same month. Juneteenth began rising to prominence in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd, a Black man, sparked protests across the country against police brutality, USA TODAY reports. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., first introduced the Juneteenth bill in 2020 following the killings of Floyd and Breonna Taylor of Louisville, Kentucky. His initial attempt to pass the bill was unsuccessful. Is there mail delivery on Juneteenth? Is the post office open? Does FedEx deliver? No. As a federal holiday, the U.S. Postal Service is closed that day, and there will be no mail delivered. FedEx pickup and delivery services will be available on June 19, according to the company's website. FedEx Office locations will also be open, USA TODAY reports. Are banks open on Juneteenth? Juneteenth is a Federal Reserve bank holiday, meaning the organization that regulates the nation's banking system is closed, according to Banks aren't required to close for Federal Reserve holidays, but they often do. Transactions made during these holidays won't be posted until the next business day. Branches of Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank and JPMorgan Chase will be closed on Juneteenth, USA TODAY is reporting. Capital One Cafes will remain open. Is the stock market open or closed on Juneteenth? The New York Stock Exchange is closed on federal holidays and will be closed on Juneteenth, according to its website. Is trash pickup delayed for Juneteenth? Trash pickup may be delayed because of Juneteenth, depending on the hauler. Contact your municipality or private provider to learn more.

Woman Worries Her 40-Year-Old 'Big Mama's Boy' Husband Will Never Be Independent

A woman worries her husband, who's a "big mamma's boy," will never be independent In a post on Reddit, she writes that his mom weighs in on everything from his 401k to "what soap cleaner is best" "A few months ago I told him his mother is a dealbreaker, but I'm not confident he will ever truly be independent," she writesA woman says her 40-year-old husband is so reliant on his mom that she's worried he'll never be truly independent. The woman shares her dilemma in a Reddit post, writing, "My (35F) husband (40M) is a big mamma's boy. He hid this for the six years we were long distance." "He needs her opinion in every small and big thing and texts and calls daily (401k for new job, will boxes fit in the car for a move, what soap cleaner is best)," she writes. "The thing is, in the beginning he wasn't like this when we dated in person. He had career troubles and court stuff (due to her) so she stepped in and took over; she has access to all his finances, emails, etc since then (unbeknownst to me)." Now, the couple has been married for a couple of years, and his mom's "overreach" is killing the romance. "He has slowly been trying to untangle himself but things came to a head when we moved recently. I rearranged a busy work schedule to move half our stuff on Memorial Day weekend," she writes. "He was agreeable at first, but then closer to the date I suspect he spoke to her and she shut it down bc he refused to do so." Come moving day, the woman enlisted her own parents to help, and her husband got into a fight due to his car being too full of the couple's belongings. "A few months ago I told him his mother is a dealbreaker, but I'm not confident he will ever truly be independent," she writes. "Another thing is he lacks initiative in housework and has to be assigned tasks. My family thinks I deserve better." Now, she's debating what she should do and taking to Reddit to ask others if relationships can improve despite a meddling mother-in-law. "Has anyone seen an improvement being in a relationship with a mamma's boy or is it better to cut losses now?" she writes. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Reddit users aren't confident the relationship can improve. "You're not imagining it, mamma's boy habits like that rarely just disappear," writes one commenter. "And if she's controlling his finances and emails? That's a giant red flag, not 'relationship growing pains.' You're waiting for a man to show up who's been buried under his mom's thumb for years. Time to ask yourself if you want a partner or a perpetual child." Adds another: "If you feel like you're shouldering all the emotional labor and boundary-setting, it might be time to reevaluate. Consider couples therapy to explore these issues further. Ultimately, you deserve a partnership where your needs are respected." Read the original article on People

DAT: Typical May truckload rates, volumes masked tariff turmoil

BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Spot truckload van and refrigerated freight volumes rose modestly in May as shippers positioned inventory ahead of summer and potential tariffs, said DAT Freight & Analytics, which operates the DAT One freight marketplace and DAT iQ data analytics service. The DAT Truckload Volume Index (TVI) reflected typical seasonal changes: Van TVI: 247, up 3% compared to April Refrigerated ('reefer') TVI: 200, up 5% Flatbed TVI: 309, down 4% Year-over-year monthly comparisons for van freight were negative for the second consecutive month, slipping 1.4% compared to May 2024. The Reefer TVI was up 6% year over year and the Flatbed TVI increased 3% compared to May 2024. Spot van, reefer rates gained Amid relatively steady freight volumes, spot van and reefer rates increased solidly: Spot van: $1.99 per mile, up 3 cents from April Spot reefer: $2.36 per mile, up 9 cents Spot flatbed: $2.57 per mile, unchanged The van linehaul rate averaged $1.62 per mile, up 5 cents month over month, while the reefer rate rose 10 cents to $1.95. The flatbed linehaul rate increased 1 cent to $2.12. Typically, van and reefer rates rise in May as demand to move produce and retail goods ahead of the Memorial Day holiday increases, and drivers plan downtime around the three-day Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Roadcheck enforcement event in the middle of the month. 'The averages signaled normal seasonality in May, although in reality, there were swings in rates and volumes from week to week,' said Ken Adamo, Chief of Analytics for DAT. 'Between Roadcheck, Memorial Day, and shippers adjusting imports due to tariffs, it was an uneven and challenging month for carriers, brokers, and shippers.' Contract rates slipped Contract truckload rates dipped compared to April: Contract Van: $2.39 per mile, down 1 cent month over month and 4 cents lower year over year Contract Reefer: $2.72 per mile, down 2 cents and 7 cents lower year over year Contract Flatbed: $3.07 per mile, down 1 cent and 3 cents lower year over year The DAT Truckload Volume Index reflects the change in the number of loads with a pickup date during that month. A baseline of 100 equals the number of loads moved in January 2015, as recorded in DAT RateView, a database tracking rates paid on an average of 3 million loads per month. DAT benchmark spot rates are derived from invoice data for hauls of 250 miles or more with a pickup date during the month reported. Linehaul rates deduct an average fuel surcharge amount, which was 37 cents, 41 cents, and 45 cents for vans, reefers, and flatbeds, respectively. About DAT Freight & Analytics DAT Freight & Analytics operates DAT One, North America's largest truckload freight marketplace; DAT iQ, the industry's leading freight data analytics service; Trucker Tools, the leader in load visibility; and Outgo, the financial services platform. Man in Green Card Process Detained by ICE at Grand Canyon—Boyfriend

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A man in the process of obtaining permanent residency in the United States was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents while sightseeing at the Grand Canyon, his boyfriend told Newsweek. Newsweek reached out to ICE and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services via email, for comment. Why It Matters President Donald Trump campaigned on mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, and has ramped up immigration enforcement since his return to office in January. The Trump administration said it deported around 100,000 illegal immigrants in the initial months of the presidency, and many individuals have been deported following Trump invoking the rarely used Alien Enemies Act of 1798, something which has been criticized and blocked by judges. Although he has said authorities would primarily target individuals with criminal records, there have been reports of non-criminals being detained by ICE agents. Reuters reported earlier in June that about 7,800 migrants with no criminal record were arrested by ICE in June. What to Know Ricardo Dominguez of Kissimmee, Florida, told Newsweek that his boyfriend Juan Vita Leite Pinto, a Brazilian national with a valid Florida ID and work permit, was taken into custody by ICE agents over Memorial Day weekend while visiting the Grand Canyon. While Vita Leite Pinto lives in Orlando, he was out west for work as a harvester at the time. Only one week earlier, the couple visited the Hoover Dam with no issues, Dominguez said in a phone interview on Thursday. But when Vita Leite-Pinto visited the Grand Canyon, he was stopped by immigration agents. He presented his Florida ID card but was told that was not sufficient. He has been held in ICE custody for the weeks since then. Juan Vita poses for a photograph taken by his boyfriend Ricardo Dominguez. Courtesey of Ricardo Dominguez Vita Leite Pinto first traveled to the U.S. in 2012 and fell in love with the country, Dominguez said. He returned about four years ago on a visitor visa and began the process of applying for citizenship. They have since decided to get married and start the process for him to get a green card. His first interview was coming up before the detainment, according to Dominguez. Dominguez has set up a GoFundMe to help pay for legal representation for him, he said. He has spoken with lawyers, but it is expensive to pay for that legal representation, as the U.S. government does not provide immigrants with free counsel. "He doesn't like being in there. He wants to work. He enjoys work. He enjoys his job, and being out, getting to know this country," he said. "He just wanted to go back to his job and working on us getting married." Vita Leite Pinto does not have any criminal record, according to Dominguez. Dominguez said he has been receiving limited information from the agency because the two are not yet married, though the two do speak daily. He is concerned his citizenship process could be made more difficult if he is deported. If that happens, Dominguez said he plans to travel to Brazil with him to continue the process—but that's a "last resort." ICE records show that Vita Leite-Pinto is "in ICE custody" in Arizona's Eloy Detention Center. The agency has not said why he was detained. His cousin was also detained, but the family is still working on finding out exactly where he is, Dominguez said. He said there are a "lot of unknowns" in terms of what identification is needed to show his status as having a work permit. There have been similar incidents across the country where immigrants at various stages of legal residency have been detained. For instance, Kasper Eriksen, a Danish national living in Mississippi and a father of four children, was detained at his citizenship interview in April due to a paperwork discrepancy from years ago. He had liven in the U.S. legally since 2013 Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Newsweek he had a "final order of removal from an immigration judge." A 66-year-old man named Victor Avila, who has held a green card for 58 years, was detained by ICE agents after visiting his son who is a member of the U.S. Air Force, according to a GoFundMe. A man named Sayed Naser, who said he worked as an interpreter for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, was taken into custody during an asylum hearing in California last week. What Happens Next Vita Leite Pinto remains in custody and is awaiting further hearings. His next court date is set for June 27, Dominguez said. ICE has not commented on the case.

I track mattress sales for a living and this is the best deal I've ever seen on the Casper Cloud One

Casper's Cloud One mattress has an innovative approach to side sleeper comfort, and for the first time ever you can save on this plush all-foam bed with 20% off the new Cloud One mattress in the Casper 4th of July sale. We've spent thousands of hours testing beds to find the best mattresses for all sleep styles but the Cloud One is like nothing we've tried, using unique foam pillars to create targeted cushioning and to enhance airflow, resulting in cooler sleep on an all-foam bed. Casper mattress sales are semi-regular and even then, the brand states that the Cloud One is excluded from site-wide discounts. We've been patiently waiting for a sale on the Cloud One and it's finally here, so now is the time to browse. Want a more traditional mattress feel? You can find all the latest deals on all bed types with our mattress sales guide. Casper Cloud One mattress: full was $1,149 now $919.20 at CasperCasper's Cloud One mattress is an all-foam design but it differs significantly from the beds you'll find in our guide to the best memory foam mattresses. Designed using foam pillars, instead of the traditional foam slab, this pocketed approach should improve air flow and add plushness, with each pillar contouring to your body for targeted comfort. It promises a medium feel and we expect it to have a cushioned pressure relief similar to the best mattresses for side sleepers. There are only two sizes of the Casper Cloud One mattress available – full and queen – and this is the first time we've seen them discounted (the Cloud One was full price in the Memorial Day sales). With 20% off a queen is now $999.20 (was $1,249). A 100-night trial and 10-year warranty are included. User score: ★★★★½ (15 reviews) Casper The One mattress: twin was $749 now $599 at CasperCasper's flagship all-foam the One mattress might not have the unusual features of the Cloud One, but its supportive feel impressed in our Casper One mattress review. Firmer than the Cloud One, we think it's a good mattress for back sleepers, while its five-star motion isolation makes it a strong choice for couples. In the 20% off sale a queen is reduced from $999 to $799 and comes with a 100-night trial and 10-year warranty. We have seen slightly bigger discounts on the One, so if you aren't in a rush you might want to wait to buy. But be warned, Casper tends to save its biggest price drops for major sales days, so you might be waiting a while. Our review: ★★★★User score: ★★★★½ (17,000+ reviews)
