Biden to attend Juneteenth celebration in Galveston
Former President Biden will attend a Juneteenth celebration at a historic church in Galveston, Texas, on Thursday, The Associated Press reported. Biden will attend the event hosted by the Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church — one of the places the order announcing the end of slavery in Texas was read on June 19, 1865. That historic day is now commemorated each year on June 19. Biden signed legislation into law making Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021. The church, which describes itself as 'the birthplace of Juneteenth,' hosts an annual celebration including a 'family fun day,' a historic reenactment of the 'emancipation march,' and an 'emancipation service,' according to the website. Biden marked Juneteenth last year about a week early, hosting a celebration concert at the White House that included singers Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle. 'The day reminds us that we have a hell of a lot more work to do,' Biden told the nearly 1,700 attendees. 'Let's keep marching. Let's keep the faith.' President Trump does not have any public events listed for Thursday. A White House official told The Hill that the president plans to sign a proclamation declaring June 19, 2025, as 'Juneteenth Day of Observance.' The Hill has reached out to Biden's office about his plans. Updated at 5:35 p.m. EDT Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trump on Juneteenth: US has ‘too many non-working holidays'
Related video: Juneteenth: Safety, politics lead to downsized or canceled celebrations | Morning in America President Trump said the country is losing money due to the number of federal holidays on Thursday, which marks Juneteenth, the newest addition to the U.S. holiday calendar. 'Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed,' the president wrote in a Truth Social post. 'The workers don't want it either,' he added. Government employees are traditionally given the day off on federal holidays while receiving pay. Juneteenth, created to celebrate the freedom of enslaved Black Americans, was designated as a federal holiday in 2021 by former President Biden. 'Soon we'll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!' Trump wrote on Thursday. The president did not participate in any Juneteenth events or celebrations. Biden, while in office, hosted a celebratory concert on the South Lawn with famous Black performers and invited a range of elected officials to attend the formal gathering. This year, the former president participated in a commemorative event in Galveston, Texas. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Biden in Juneteenth remarks rips ‘efforts to erase history'
Former President Biden during a speech Thursday night to mark Juneteenth, the holiday that commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the U.S. in the 1860s, blasted 'efforts to erase history.' 'I took the view as president, we need to be honest about our history — especially in the face of ongoing efforts to erase our history,' Biden said at a church in Galveston, Texas, founded by slaves in 1848. Biden also took a swipe at President Trump's decision to restore the names of military installations that honored Confederate generals. 'I played a role in changing names of all those military camps with names tied to slavery,' Biden said. 'What are they doing now? Reinstating those names.' 'Folks, darkness can hide much but can erase nothing, and only with truth can come justice and healing,' he added. Congress passed bipartisan legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021, and Biden signed it into law. 'Democrats and Republicans came together in overwhelming numbers memorialize this profound moment in American history,' Biden recalled late Thursday. 'The events of Juneteenth are of monumental importance to the American story.' Trump, who vowed on the campaign trail in 2020 to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday, didn't formally recognize the holiday Thursday, as he had during his first term. He posted on social media that there are 'too many non-working holidays.' 'Soon we'll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked during Thursday's press briefing whether Trump planned to sign a Juneteenth proclamation. 'I'm not tracking his signature on a proclamation today,' she said. 'We are working 24/7 right now.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Iran supreme leader responds to Trump: ‘We will never surrender'
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei early Wednesday declared his nation 'will never surrender' to threats from Israel's allies, including President Trump, amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. 'It isn't wise to tell the Iranian nation to surrender,' Khamenei said in a post on the social platform X. 'What should the Iranian nation surrender to? We will never surrender in response to the attacks of anyone.' 'This is the logic of the Iranian nation. This is the spirit of the Iranian nation,' he added. The response comes a day after Trump called on Iran to agree to an 'unconditional surrender,' signaling earlier this week a ceasefire agreement wasn't enough. The president has also doubled down on his request for a deal with Tehran to dismantle its nuclear program. While Trump has left open the possibility of U.S. troops getting involved in the conflict, he has not, thus far, supported plans to target Khamenei. 'We know exactly where the so-called 'Supreme Leader' is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there,' Trump said Tuesday. 'We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now.' 'But we don't want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers,' he added, alluding to Iran's suggestion that it could target U.S. bases should the Trump administration choose to step in. 'Our patience is wearing thin. Thank you for your attention to this matter!' Iran has consistently rejected calls to surrender after launching a counterattack following Israel's initial strike and mounted plans to continue the development of nuclear weapons while warning against U.S. interference. 'The US entering in this matter [war] is 100% to its own detriment,' Khamenei added Wednesday in a separate X post. 'The damage it will suffer will be far greater than any harm that Iran may encounter.' 'The US President threatens us. With his absurd rhetoric, he demands that the Iranian people surrender to him,' he added in another post. 'They should make threats against those who are afraid of being threatened. The Iranian nation isn't frightened by such threats.' The Iranian death toll is above 500, and injuries have soared to more than a thousand, according to the Washington based group Human Rights Activist. Trump and Israeli forces have encouraged all who are able to evacuate the Iranian capital of Tehran, predicting additional air raids and a high increase in casualties. 'Iran should have signed the 'deal' I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life,' Trump wrote earlier this week on Truth Social. 'Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON.' The president added, 'I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
