The Rock explains bizarre WrestleMania 41 absence – and WWE fans are having absolutely none of it

Dwayne 'The Final Boss' Johnson was also unhappy with how some aspects of the John Cena vs Cody Rhodes finale unfolded in Las Vegas
Dwayne ' The Rock ' Johnson has revealed his reason for skipping WrestleMania 41, leaving millions of wrestling fans gutted.
The Final Boss was expected to attend the Las Vegas showstopper for the culmination of six weeks of 'build' for John Cena vs Cody Rhodes.

The Hollywood A-lister was the in-ring mastermind behind Cena's heel turn at Elimination Chamber, which rocked the WWE universe to its core.
But The Rock never appeared in Sin City as, instead, his accomplice and music star Travis Scott helped Cena over the line to lift the WWE belt for a record-breaking 17th time.
Fans came out in their droves to slam his absence with many loyalists convinced the Hall of Famer would appear.
And now he has responded when speaking Tuesday on The Pat McAfee Show - and revealed he never wanted to continue his involvement in one of the biggest storylines in pro wrestling history.
"When we were moving forward with John and this idea of him getting crowned at WrestleMania and becoming 17, and being a heel champion, I knew then the best thing for The Final Boss," Johnson said.
"We've established this idea of Cody's soul. We can always come back to it. I did feel, I made the call, I don't want to be involved in that. Let 'The Final Boss' step back into the shadows.

"Let all the spotlight go to John, let it go to Cody. Let's not make it about Cody's soul or John's soul. Let's let them do what they do."
The storyline began way back after February's Royal Rumble where The Rock made a shock appearance and vowed to take Rhodes' "soul."
But The Rock said his role in the rivalry had ended just weeks later.

"I called John after Elimination Chamber, spoke to him, called Cody, and I said, 'I think 'The Final Boss' work is done. We've established it,'" Johnson said.
"We just pulled off the greatest angle in the history of professional wrestling, other than Hulk Hogan turning heel back in the '90s.

"I said, 'This is amazing. We have six weeks. Now, let's build. You guys go and crush it. I'll be right there with you, and I'm always here if you need me, but I think it's best for 'The Final Boss' not to be involved in that finish. Six weeks to plan for that.'
"I loved the finish of [Sunday's] match. I would have finessed things a little differently in how they got there, but that's just me creatively. There are a lot of minds in the room.
"That's my thought, but still, ultimately, the bottom line was I loved John getting 17. I never had a concern about John pulling this off.

"My thoughts were always to Cody because of what we've established with him and his story, and the kind of babyface he is.
"So, if done right, and I think if finessed right and nuanced right, down the road, that guy not only has an incredible babyface run again as champion, but also just an unheard of rise as a heel down the road."
Although Johnson was satisfied with Scott's involvement, he didn't think it was perfect.

"We can insert 'Final Boss' in the end of this finish, but then where do we go?" Johnson said.
"There's other commitments that I have. I want to also be careful that we're not overstepping and leaning over our skis too much here.
"Can get involved in the finish, but I said, 'Why get involved in that finish when the spotlight should just be on, in my opinion, John, 17, heel champion, what does 2025 look like if this man says he is going to ruin professional wrestling?'

"That, to me, is the anchoring storyline. It's not soul right now. We'll go back to it."
Fans on X were quick to hit back at The Rock's explanation with the census he had misled them.
One said: "The Rock's interview was full of passive-aggressive comments & contradictions Oh to be a fly on the wall for HHH/Rock communications over the past year... Regarding his excuse for stepping back, he is either dumb (he's not) or this was a receipt for derailing his WM40 plans."

Another posted: "The Rock inserting himself in this feud just do do sweet f*** all when it actually matters."
One fan quipped: "The Rock randomly pulls up to a weekly show, blows up creative by inserting himself into a story, then f***s off with no intention to coming back to finish what he abruptly started."
Another raged: "This photo should've been the closing shot of WrestleMania [with a picture of John Cena, The Rock and Travis Scot in the ring]."
John Cena now looks set to rekindle his rivalry with Randy Orton after they came to blows at WWE Raw on Monday.

‘How to Train Your Dragon' tops the US box office as ‘Elio' marks a new low for Pixar

Neither Pixar nor zombies were enough to topple 'How to Train Your Dragon" from the No. 1 slot at North American box offices over the weekend. The Universal Pictures live-action remake remained the top film, bringing in $37 million in ticket sales in its second weekend, despite the sizeable new releases of 'Elio' and '28 Years Later.' , according to studio estimates Sunday. 'How To Train Your Dragon' has rapidly amassed $358.2 million worldwide. Six years after its last entry, the Dean DeBlois-directed 'How To Train Your Dragon' has proven a potent revival of the DreamWorks Animation franchise. A sequel is already in the works for the $150 million production, which remakes the 2010 animated tale about a Viking boy and his dragon. Pixar's 'Elio' had a particularly tough weekend. The Walt Disney Co. animation studio has often launched some of its biggest titles in June, including 'Cars,' 'WALL-E' and 'Toy Story 4.' But 'Elio,' a science fiction adventure about a boy who dreams of meeting aliens, notched a modest $21 million, the lowest opening ever for Pixar. 'This is a weak opening for a new Pixar movie,' said David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm FranchiseRe. 'These would be solid numbers for another original animation film, but this is Pixar, and by Pixar's remarkable standard, the opening is well below average.' 'Elio,' originally set for release in early 2024, had a bumpy road to the screen. Adrian Molina — co-director of 'Coco' — was replaced mid-production by Domee Shi ('Turning Red') and Madeline Sharafian. Back at Disney's D23 conference in 2022, America Ferrera appeared to announce her role as Elio's mother, but the character doesn't even exist in the revamped film. Disney and Pixar spent at least $150 million making 'Elio,' which didn't fare any better internationally than it did in North America, bringing in just $14 million from 43 territories. Pixar stumbled coming out of the pandemic before stabilizing performance with 2023's 'Elemental' ($496.4 million worldwide) and 2024's 'Inside Out 2' ($1.7 billion), which was the company's biggest box office hit. 'Elemental' was Pixar's previously lowest earning film, launching with $29.6 million. It rallied in later weeks to collect nearly half a billion dollars at the box office. The company's first movie, 'Toy Story,' opened with $29.1 million in 1995, or $60 when adjusted for inflation. It remains to be seen whether 'Elio's' decent reviews and 'A' from CinemaScore audiences can lead it to repeat 'Elemental's' trajectory. With most schools on summer break, the competition for family audiences was stiff. Disney's own 'Lilo & Stitch,' another live-action remake, continued to pull in young moviegoers. It grossed $9.7 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its global tally to $910.3 million. . '28 Years Later' signaled the return of another, far gorier franchise. Director Danny Boyle reunited with screenwriter Alex Garland to resume their pandemic apocalypse thriller 25 years after '28 Days Later' and 18 years after its sequel, '28 Weeks Later.' The Sony Pictures release opened with $30 million. That was good enough to give Boyle, the filmmaker of 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'Trainspotting,' the biggest opening weekend of his career. The film, which cost $60 million to make, jumps ahead nearly three decades from the outbreak of the so-called rage virus for a coming-of-age story about a 12-year-old (Alfie Williams) venturing out of his family's protected village. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes co-star. Reviews have been good (90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) for '28 Years Later,' though audience reaction (a 'B' CinemaScore) is mixed. Boyle has more plans for the zombie franchise, which will next see the release of '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' next year from director Nia DaCosta. '28 Years Later' added another $30 million in 59 overseas markets. After its strong start last weekend with $12 million, A24's 'Materialists' held well with $5.8 million in its second weekend. The romantic drama by writer-director Celine Song and starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans has collected $24 million so far. Next weekend should also be a competitive one in movie theaters, with both 'F1,' from Apple and Warner Bros., and Universal's 'Megan 2.0' launching in cinemas. Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'How to Train Your Dragon,' $37 million. 2. '28 Years Later,' $30 million. 3. 'Elio,' $21 million. 4. 'Lilo & Stitch,' $9.7 million. 5. 'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,' $6.6 million. 6. 'Materialists,' $5.8 million. 7. 'Ballerina,' $4.5 million. 8. 'Karate Kid: Legends,' $2.4 million. 9. 'Final Destination: Bloodlines," $1.9 million. 10. 'Kuberaa,' $1.7 million.

Johnny Depp: My friends betrayed me

Johnny Depp, the Hollywood actor, has claimed he was betrayed by his friends after being accused of abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard. The strongly denied claims were first levelled against Depp, 62, by Heard during divorce proceedings in 2016. The actor's failed marriage to the 39-year-old actress made international headlines when details of alleged violence between the pair were aired in courts in the UK and US. Depp has now criticised the behaviour of several close friends at the time and also claimed he had been a 'crash test dummy for the #MeToo movement'. 'I'll tell you what hurts. There are people, and I'm thinking of three, who did me dirty. Those people were at my kids' parties, throwing them in the air,' he told The Sunday Times. 'And, look, I understand people who could not stand up [for me], because the most frightening thing to them was making the right choice.' One individual who spoke out against Depp despite their long working relationship was Tracey Jacobs, his agent of 30 years, who was sacked in 2016. She claimed during Depp's legal battles that studios were 'reluctant' to hire him because of his lateness. Depp said of Jacobs: 'My loyalty is the last thing anybody could question. I was with one agent for 30 years, but she spoke in court about how difficult I was.' His image came under global scrutiny when he brought a libel case against The Sun newspaper after he was described as a 'wife-beater' in a column. Numerous alleged details of the couple's marriage were made public during the case, including claims of the actor having a finger severed, being struck by Heard, passing out drunk and finding her faeces in their bed. Depp said he felt compelled to risk revealing details of his personal life, adding: 'Look, it had gone far enough. I knew I'd have to semi-eviscerate myself. Everyone was saying 'It'll go away'. But I can't trust that.' While a judge ruled against Depp in his High Court case against The Sun, the star won damages for defamation from Heard in June 2022 following a legal battle in the US. But the allegations of abuse levelled against Depp by Heard continued to dog the film star, whose presence at the Cannes film festival in 2023 was opposed by several feminist groups in France. Following a period away from major Hollywood productions, Depp has this year been working on his comeback film Day Drinker. In the thriller, Depp will star as a mysterious guest on a private yacht who finds himself entangled with a criminal, played by Penelope Cruz.
