‘How to Train Your Dragon' tops the US box office as ‘Elio' marks a new low for Pixar

Independenta day ago

Neither Pixar nor zombies were enough to topple 'How to Train Your Dragon" from the No. 1 slot at North American box offices over the weekend. The Universal Pictures live-action remake remained the top film, bringing in $37 million in ticket sales in its second weekend, despite the sizeable new releases of 'Elio' and '28 Years Later.' , according to studio estimates Sunday. 'How To Train Your Dragon' has rapidly amassed $358.2 million worldwide.
Six years after its last entry, the Dean DeBlois-directed 'How To Train Your Dragon' has proven a potent revival of the DreamWorks Animation franchise. A sequel is already in the works for the $150 million production, which remakes the 2010 animated tale about a Viking boy and his dragon.
Pixar's 'Elio' had a particularly tough weekend. The Walt Disney Co. animation studio has often launched some of its biggest titles in June, including 'Cars,' 'WALL-E' and 'Toy Story 4.' But 'Elio,' a science fiction adventure about a boy who dreams of meeting aliens, notched a modest $21 million, the lowest opening ever for Pixar.
'This is a weak opening for a new Pixar movie,' said David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm FranchiseRe. 'These would be solid numbers for another original animation film, but this is Pixar, and by Pixar's remarkable standard, the opening is well below average.'
'Elio,' originally set for release in early 2024, had a bumpy road to the screen. Adrian Molina — co-director of 'Coco' — was replaced mid-production by Domee Shi ('Turning Red') and Madeline Sharafian. Back at Disney's D23 conference in 2022, America Ferrera appeared to announce her role as Elio's mother, but the character doesn't even exist in the revamped film.
Disney and Pixar spent at least $150 million making 'Elio,' which didn't fare any better internationally than it did in North America, bringing in just $14 million from 43 territories. Pixar stumbled coming out of the pandemic before stabilizing performance with 2023's 'Elemental' ($496.4 million worldwide) and 2024's 'Inside Out 2' ($1.7 billion), which was the company's biggest box office hit.
'Elemental' was Pixar's previously lowest earning film, launching with $29.6 million. It rallied in later weeks to collect nearly half a billion dollars at the box office. The company's first movie, 'Toy Story,' opened with $29.1 million in 1995, or $60 when adjusted for inflation. It remains to be seen whether 'Elio's' decent reviews and 'A' from CinemaScore audiences can lead it to repeat 'Elemental's' trajectory.
With most schools on summer break, the competition for family audiences was stiff. Disney's own 'Lilo & Stitch,' another live-action remake, continued to pull in young moviegoers. It grossed $9.7 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its global tally to $910.3 million. .
'28 Years Later' signaled the return of another, far gorier franchise. Director Danny Boyle reunited with screenwriter Alex Garland to resume their pandemic apocalypse thriller 25 years after '28 Days Later' and 18 years after its sequel, '28 Weeks Later.'
The Sony Pictures release opened with $30 million. That was good enough to give Boyle, the filmmaker of 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'Trainspotting,' the biggest opening weekend of his career. The film, which cost $60 million to make, jumps ahead nearly three decades from the outbreak of the so-called rage virus for a coming-of-age story about a 12-year-old (Alfie Williams) venturing out of his family's protected village. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes co-star.
Reviews have been good (90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) for '28 Years Later,' though audience reaction (a 'B' CinemaScore) is mixed. Boyle has more plans for the zombie franchise, which will next see the release of '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' next year from director Nia DaCosta.
'28 Years Later' added another $30 million in 59 overseas markets.
After its strong start last weekend with $12 million, A24's 'Materialists' held well with $5.8 million in its second weekend. The romantic drama by writer-director Celine Song and starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans has collected $24 million so far.
Next weekend should also be a competitive one in movie theaters, with both 'F1,' from Apple and Warner Bros., and Universal's 'Megan 2.0' launching in cinemas.
Top 10 movies by domestic box office

2. '28 Years Later,' $30 million.

Naomi Campbell, 55, shares rare snaps of her daughter, four, and son, two, on a family day out as she gushes over 'my heartbeats, my blessings'

Naomi Campbell has shared a rare snap of her children as the family enjoyed a day out in the woods. The supermodel, 55, revealed last year that she welcomed both of her children via surrogate, in 2021 and 2023. In sweet snaps shared by Naomi on Instagram on Monday, Naomi was seen holding hands with her tots as they went tree hugging. Other snaps showed Naomi strolling through the woods with her son as she wore a white smock dress. 'In the woods, hugging trees — surrounded by my heartbeats, my blessings, my children. ❤️❤️,' she wrote. Naomi became a mother for the first time in 2021 aged 50 and posed with the newborn on the cover of Vogue. The supermodel shocked the world when she announced the surprise birth her daughter followed by a son in 2023, both of whose names the catwalk queen has not made public. Naomi previously admitted that her daughter wasn't adopted before clarifying that she hadn't been pregnant herself as she discussed how much her children mean to her. Telling The Times: 'My babies are everything to me. It's made me fear for the future.' Naomi went on to explain that she was never looking for a father for her kids and is happy being 'a single mother of a single mum'. When asked whether she used a surrogate she replied: 'I did. I hope for a better world for my children. 'They are 110 per cent my priority. I have to be there for them on their first day at school.' Her daughter's arrival sparked widespread speculation that she used a surrogate, a popular approach among older celebrity mothers. This was because she was not spotted with an obvious baby bump in the months leading up to the birth. Naomi also spoke of her concern that younger generations are not interested in having children. She also insisted parenthood is always 'worth it', no matter how difficult the circumstances. She said: 'I have heard a lot of young girls saying that it is too expensive to have children and they may not want them, and I have said, "You will change your mind. You will want to be a mum"'. 'I understand economically it is tough. But my mum had nothing and she made it work. It's worth it. It is so amazing'. She continued: 'We have to depend on the younger generation to change this world. I trust my children more than us to do the right thing.' Elsewhere in the interview, she revealed that she won't let her daughter go into the world of work at 15 like she did, after starting her own career in her teenage years when she did her first cover shoot. The beauty, who was whisked abroad to model in her first photoshoot for Elle in New Orleans aged 15, said she would be uncomfortable with her now three-year-old to start working so young. The mother-of-two said: 'I'm not sure I would let her start working at 15. It's a ruthless world.'

Mariah Carey's $75,000-a-month rented Connecticut estate now for sale at $12.4 million

A Connecticut mansion rented by Mariah Carey for nearly two years is now available for purchase. The 56-year-old music artist — who was spotted out in London last week — splashed out $75,000 a month for the 18,000 sq ft property, built in 1929, beginning in July 2023. The New Canaan estate, which Carey once featured in a music video, has hit the real estate market for $12.4 million, according to Mansion Global. Listing agent Danielle Malloy told the outlet, 'The quality and scale of this home are like no other.' It boasts a four-bedroom guesthouse, wellness center with a gym, yoga studio, bar and lounge, sauna and massage room. Carey reportedly worked on parts of her forthcoming 16th album, unofficially called MC16, at the palatial residence. In its nearly 100 years, the home has only had four owners including Carlos Hank Gonzalez, a Mexico City mayor. In the 80s he contributed the nine-ft-tall, 1,500ft-long brick and limestone wall at the front. Then, in the 1990s, the structure underwent $8 million in renovations that included a 10,000 sq ft expansion where a new kitchen, outdoor courtyard and great room were designed, per Mansion Global. 'You can see New York City on a clear day,' Malloy told the publication of its 35 ft ceilings, two-story windows, mezzanine level and turret. The listing says the great room was inspired by the 1999 film Entrapment, starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. In the movie the actor and actress rehearse their choreography for an art heist in Castle Duart, situated on the Isle of Mull in Scotland. The latest homeowners scooped up the fanciful mansion in 2014 for $6.5 million before investing the equivalent in renovations over three years. Known as Orchards End, the homeowners enlisted architect Dinyar Wadia to execute their vision. In addition to modernizing it, 'They wanted to preserve the integrity of the home,' Malloy said. The original design was by New York architect William B. Tubby, whose repertoire included Waveny House in New Canaan, Dunnellen Hall in Greenwich, Connecticut, and the William H. Childs House in Brooklyn, Mansion Global noted. Tubby incorporated 'a slate roof, a mix of hardwood, marble and limestone floors, high ceilings, detailed millwork and plasterwork, iron-framed windows, moldings and baseboards, wide and tall doorways, and built-ins.' The first-floor rooms in the listing consist of an entry parlor, library, a game room, plus the great room. There is also a kitchen complete with a marble island and heated marble floors, a dining room with murals painted by hand, a gallery foyer, butler's pantry and a conservatory with a terrace. Meanwhile, the home's second floor is where potential buyers will find an office and eight bedrooms. On the third level there is another game room, while the basement level is designated for media and wine rooms. In total, the sprawling property offers 20,000 sq ft of indoor space — tallying the main and guest house. There are a whopping 12 bedrooms, 12 full bathrooms and four half baths. On the 6.26-acre lot there is a heated pool and spa and the wellness center is 5,000 sq ft. There's a four-car garage, sports court, balcony, central vacuum, various terraces, a home theater, 12 fireplaces, a wine cellar and fountains. About the neighborhood, Malloy confirmed, 'Oenoke is one of the most coveted and prestigious roads in New Canaan.'
