Investigation started into the cause of three vehicle collision which closed A7
AN investigation has begun into the cause of a three vehicle collision, which saw a major road in Carlisle closed during rush hour earlier this week.
Police are investigating a three-vehicle collision that occurred on Eden Bridge, Carlisle, on the afternoon of Thursday, May 15, during rush hour at about 5.05pm. The collision involved a blue Mercedes, a green Volkswagen and a black Audi; the driver of the Volkswagen suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary for treatment. The A7 into Carlisle was closed whilst the casualty was treated by NWAS paramedics and to allow for Cumbria Fire and Rescue to make the vehicles safe before recovery was completed. Protesters clash with police at Palestine Action demonstration
Protesters have clashed with police at a demonstration in support of Palestine Action as the Government moves to ban the group. The crowd surged towards police when officers tried to detain someone in Trafalgar Square in central London, while onlookers chanted 'let them go'. The protest had initially been planned to take place outside the Houses of Parliament, but the location was changed early on Monday morning after the Metropolitan Police imposed an exclusion zone. The Met commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said he was 'shocked' by the planned protest and described Palestine Action as an 'organised extremist criminal group'. The Home Secretary is due to update Parliament following the group's vandalism of two planes at an RAF base. The rally started at midday and must end by 3pm, Scotland Yard said. On Sunday, Cabinet minister Jonathan Reynolds said he could not rule out the possibility of a foreign power being behind Palestine Action Speaking at the protest, Palestine Action spokesperson Max Geller said there had never been any evidence of such claims. 'I can't overstate how absurd and disappointing that accusation is,' he told the PA news agency. 'I want to make very clear that there has never been any evidence offered to support such a claim, and if we were allowed to be a legally recognised group, that man would be being sued right now for libel.' Asked about Sir Mark Rowley's comments, he said: 'It's really troubling that the head of the Met would pre-empt the government and ban us from protesting (at the Houses of Parliament). 'It's a frustrating turn for democracy in this country.' Yvette Cooper will provide MPs with more details on the move to proscribe the group, making it a criminal offence to belong to or support it, in a written ministerial statement. Belonging to or expressing support for a proscribed organisation, along with a number of other actions, are criminal offences carrying a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. The decision comes after the group posted footage online showing two people inside the base at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. The clip shows one person riding an electric scooter up to an Airbus Voyager air-to-air refuelling tanker and appearing to spray paint into its jet engine. Speaking on Sunday, the head of the Met said he was 'shocked and frustrated' at the protest, but that until the group is proscribed the force had 'no power in law' to prevent it taking place. 'The right to protest is essential and we will always defend it, but actions in support of such a group go beyond what most would see as legitimate protest,' he added. 'Thousands of people attend protests of a different character every week without clashing with the law or with the police. The criminal charges faced by Palestine Action members, in contrast, represent a form of extremism that I believe the overwhelming majority of the public rejects.' Proscription will require Ms Cooper to lay an order in Parliament, which must then be debated and approved by both MPs and peers. Some 81 organisations have been proscribed under the 2000 Act, including Islamist terrorist groups such as Hamas and al Qaida, far-right groups such as National Action, and Russian private military company the Wagner Group. Palestine Action has staged a series of demonstrations in recent months, including spraying the London offices of Allianz Insurance with red paint over its alleged links to Israeli defence company Elbit, and vandalising Donald Trump's Turnberry golf course in South Ayrshire.

Man in court charged with murder of partner found stabbed after house explosion
A man has appeared in court charged with murdering his partner who was found stabbed following a gas explosion at her home. Annabel Rook, 46, was found with multiple stab wounds in the living room of a house in Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, north-east London, on June 17. Clifton George, 44, of Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, who was charged on Sunday with Ms Rook's murder, spoke only to confirm his personal details when he appeared in the dock at Thames Magistrates' Court on Monday. He was also charged with arson with intent to endanger life. George was arrested at the scene shortly after officers arrived and taken to hospital with slash injuries. He was later released into police custody before being charged, the Metropolitan Police said. Ms Rook was the co-founder of the refugee and women's organisation MamaSuze, an arts-based unit which helps victims of forced displacement and gender-based violence. Prosecutor Cathryn Evans repeated the organisation's tribute, telling the court Ms Rook was 'a shining light who dedicated her life to supporting others'. 'She spent the last 20 years of her career bringing joy and creativity to marginalised people and she cared deeply about improving the lives of vulnerable women and children.' George was remanded in custody to next appear at the Old Bailey on June 25. Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who is in charge of policing for the Central East Basic Command Unit, said: 'Our thoughts continue to remain with the family and friends of Annabel as they navigate this devastating loss. 'We ask that the public refrain from speculation and respect their privacy at this time, and we thank the Hackney community for their ongoing support.' In a statement previously issued via the Metropolitan Police, Ms Rook's family said they were 'struggling to come to terms with this terrible tragedy'. 'We have lost our beautiful daughter, sister, friend and mother. Annabel was a truly wonderful woman,' the tribute read. 'She touched the hearts of so many. 'She gave her life to helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged whether it was in refugee camps in Africa or setting up MamaSuze in London, to enhance the lives of survivors of forced displacement and gender-based violence. 'We would really appreciate it if our privacy could be respected.' Police were called at 4.57am on June 17 to reports of a gas explosion with a person trapped inside the property. The front bay window of the property was completely blown out that morning, with debris including plants, wooden shutters and glass scattered across the street. Two children, aged seven and nine, were taken to hospital as a precaution following the incident but are not thought to have been inside the home when the explosion happened. Six fire engines and 40 firefighters were also called to the scene.
