(Photo: Miranda Sharp) The family of Ashton Wilson, who was hit and killed by a semi in Edmonton on Tuesday, is remembering him as a brave, loving father and partner. 'It is important that what is remembered of him is not just some guy that got hit on the road, but what he meant to everybody, what he did,' his fiancee Miranda Sharp said on Thursday. 'He was a true, true light and it's important people see that.' Wilson, according to police, was hit by the semi after he pulled his van onto the shoulder of Whitemud Drive and got out to check it. He died at the scene. His four-year-old step-daughter Charlize was in the back, but was not seriously hurt. (Sean McClune/CTV News Edmonton) Sharpe, Charlize's mother, said she had spoken with Wilson half-an-hour before the crash and knew they were on the way home. When he didn't arrive, she knew something was wrong. She got in her car and started driving to the Whitemud to where Google Maps was showing an accident. 'I was saying my prayers and just thinking of Charlize … It didn't really even cross my mind that Ashton would be the one that wasn't going to be here.' 'It's about love' Sharp said Wilson's death comes at a time of big change for him and his family. The couple had just got engaged in April and were planning for a wedding next summer, as well as starting the process of growing their family. Wilson, a carpenter who always wanted to teach, was leading classes at the DIY Training Centre in Edmonton and had recently secured a contract to teach at a school for deaf people. '(It was) something that meant the world to him, not only because he could use his signing skills, but because inclusion and accessibility were values he lived by and carried into our family,' Sharpe said. (Photo: Miranda Sharp) Inclusivity was important to Wilson, Sharp explained, because of their daughter's autism and because he was transgender. 'I know that being correctly seen, especially in a moment like this, where his legacy is being honoured, would mean the world to him,' she added. 'Getting it right here isn't about politics, it's about love, respect and truly seeing him.' 'His proudest role in life' Wilson had been in Charlize's life since she was four months old and was a devoted father to her, Sharp said. 'His proudest role in life was being a papa,' she said. 'She was the absolute centre of his universe.' After speaking with her daughter, Sharp doesn't believe Charlize saw Wilson get hit, but she knows he died in the crash. Miranda Sharp and Ashton Wilson Miranda Sharp's daughter Charlize graduated from pre-Kindergarten on June 19, 2025, just a few days after her step-father Ashton Wilson was killed in a crash. (Photo: Miranda Sharp) Despite the difficulty of losing a partner and father, mother and daughter celebrated Thursday at Charlize's pre-Kindergarten graduation. It's what Wilson would have wanted, Sharp said. 'Our daughter was our world and he wouldn't want me to slow down. I need to be there,' she said. 'Even though this is killing me, losing him, he left me with a support system. 'He left me with tools. He set me up for a really good future.'
