Karel Geraerts tops Reims' shortlist for new head coach

Yahoo7 days ago

According to a report from L'Équipe, Karel Geraerts tops Stade de Reims's shortlist for their new head coach following the departure of Samba Diawara. The Champagne club reportedly interviewed Geraerts and were convinced by the Belgian's profile.
However, Geraerts, a free agent since September, after he was sacked from Schalke 04, has not yet given Reims a definitive answer. The club are faced with certain issues that could detract from the attractiveness of the role; they will likely have to sell this summer, while the budget will also be tightened after suffering a relegation to Ligue 2 via the playoffs.

Reims had been linked with Philippe Montanier, who has not had a head coaching role since leaving Toulouse FC in 2023 after leading the club to their first-ever Coupe de France title. However, Mohamed Toubache-Ter reported that conversations had cooled between the two parties.
L'Équipe points to Olivier Dall'Oglio as another option if Geraerts cannot be convinced. He had led AS Saint-Étienne to promotion in the 2023/24 season, but was sacked in the past campaign following a poor set of results.

Adrien Dumont de Chassart becomes latest Korn Ferry Tour player to break 60

Adrien Dumont de Chassart called it a 'good day to shoot 59.' As if there's ever a bad day. The 25-year-old Belgian fired the 14th sub-60 score in Korn Ferry Tour history, an 11-under 59 in Thursday's opening round of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open. Dumont de Chassart took advantage of preferred lies and ideal conditions (temperatures in the low 80s, single-digit wind) at Crestview Country Club, which was damaged earlier this week after severe weather ripped through the Wichita area. Dumont de Chassart carded 12 birdies and one bogey as he took the lead by four shots following the morning wave. He hit three greens in under regulation, including on both par-5s. When he birdied the second hole to reach 7 under for his round, he began thinking about breaking 60. Having never broken 61 before in his career, Dumont de Chassart missed a short birdie putt on the par-4 seventh before sticking a 6-iron close at the par-3 eighth for his last birdie of the round. 'I'm glad I had my chance, and I took it,' said Dumont de Chassart, who didn't make a putt longer than 25 feet and missed only three fairways. 'If I can hit the ball in play, I feel like I can compete at any level,' he added. Dumont de Chassart's 59 was the sixth sub-60 score on the KFT in the last three seasons. Cristobal del Solar owns the KFT record for lowest round, shooting 13-under 57 at last year's Astara Golf Championship. Frankie Capan III and Stephan Jaeger have each carded 58s on the KFT. A University of Illinois product, Dumont de Chassart graduated from the KFT after just one summer two years ago. But he made just 12 of 27 cuts and ended up 164th in FedExCup points to lose his PGA Tour card. He's currently 33rd in KFT points entering this week.

OGC Nice's Marcin Bulka unenthused by Galatasaray move

Marcin Bulka (25) looks highly likely to leave OGC Nice this summer. The Polish goalkeeper, a key player for Le Gym over the past two seasons, has been in talks over a contract renewal. However, towards the start of last season, those talks hit a brick wall. There has been a deadlock ever since, and there is little optimism over a renewal of talks. Determined not to lose him on a free next summer, Nice are looking to sell Bulka during the ongoing transfer window. Initial interest in Le Gym's No.1 has come from Turkey and more specifically from Galatasaray, according to a report from L'Équipe. Advertisement However, the publication understands that Bulka himself is not particularly enthused by a move to the Turkish club, even if they will be competing in the UEFA Champions League next season. Galatasaray would be willing to spend €20m on the goalkeeper. Local rivals AS Monaco have also been cited as a potential destination by Foot Mercato. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

'Fleet-footed' Foden impresses at Club World Cup

Manchester City stepped into a new era at the revamped Fifa Club World Cup - but it was one of their old boys who stole the show in Philadelphia. Academy star Phil Foden struggled for form and fitness last season, but scored the opener and assisted Jeremy Doku in City's Group G opener. Advertisement "A new season, fresh me," he told Channel 5 afterwards. "Looking forward to the season now. "[The tournament is] very important, not just for me, but all the players. It is important to get your sharpness now in this big competition. "Playing for a club like City, there are expectations to perform in every game. I've been used to that pressure. Last season was a bit rough for all of us, but it is about going again this season." Foden was fleet-footed on the ball, occupying pockets of spaces outside the box and looking to dictate the tempo as a lot of City's play against the north African side went through him. Advertisement At the end of last season, Foden revealed he had been carrying an ankle injury. He also felt it may be better for him to miss out on the competition in the United States in order to fully recover. However, his opener - the competition's fastest goal so far - had the hallmarks of a player who had regained his confidence, taking a touch and caressing a fine finish into the far corner. "Happy with the performance and happy with the three points," added Foden. "I stayed alive, and the ball fell to me. I put it away nicely, so I am happy." Read the full article here [BBC] Foden looks refreshed and rejuvenated, finding freedom in 'Philly' and stepping up in the first game of the post-Kevin de Bruyne era. Advertisement Questions will be asked about how City replace the legendary Belgian midfielder, who has signed for Napoli on a free transfer, but Guardiola may have the perfect answer in Foden. In total, he had 54 touches of the ball against Wydad Casablanca before being substituted on the hour mark for Rodri - and became the first Englishman to score in multiple editions of the Club World Cup.
