F1 star suffers Canadian GP nightmare as passport and computer stolen by thieves
Formula 1 star Gabriel Bortoleto is chasing his first points of the season in Montreal but was hit by significant disruption when having dinner in Switzerland days before the GP
Formula 1 star Gabriel Bortoleto saw his preparations for the Canadian Grand Prix disrupted by a theft which deprived him of his passport. The thieves are understood to have struck when he was in Switzerland in the lead-up to the race, with a computer also stolen.
Bortoleto, 20, is in his first season as an F1 driver. He joined Sauber ahead of the 2025 season and has yet to score a point, but a 12th place finish in Spain in May was his best result to date.
The youngster is still able to take part in Canada, but it was touch-and-go-for a while. Thieves broke into his car and stole documents, some of which have been recovered, but he was forced to travel to Canada with a second passport as he aimed to minimise the disruption.
'I had gone to dinner one day in Switzerland and they ended up opening the car and taking my backpack," Bortoleto told Brazilian media. "I had my passports, everything inside, my computer, all my running gear,' Bortoleto described.
"It was chaos, but we managed to find the guy. Everything worked out in the end, I have my passports. We didn't find everything, but we did find some things,"
While Bortoleto is still waiting for his first point of the season, team-mate Nico Hulkenberg impressed with a fifth-place finish in Spain. The German now sits 11th in the drivers' standings wit 16 points, having opened the season with seventh place at the Australian Grand Prix.
Last year, Sauber were represented at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit by Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas, with both finishing outside the points in Canada. The 2024 race was won by eventual world champion Max Verstappen, with Lando Norris and George Russell completing the podium.
'It's a street circuit, so I think that always makes the weekend a little bit more competitive – I don't know if that's the right word. I think it makes mistakes a little bit less acceptable,' Bortoleto told reporters ahead of the 2025 race in Montreal.
This year's Canadian Grand Prix will also see Lance Stroll return to action after missing out in Barcelona. The Aston Martin driver withdrew from the Spanish Grand Prix after qualifying, and has undergone a medical procedure on his wrist ahead of his home GP in Canada.
'I started to feel some pain in my wrist and hand a couple of months ago, but I wanted to keep racing,' Stroll said. 'However, the discomfort just became too much, and we made the decision to have medical intervention.
"Naturally, I was disappointed to miss the race in Barcelona but it was the right call at the time, and I'm looking forward to getting back to racing this weekend… [The wrist's] feeling good.'

Jurgen Klopp's three-word response to huge Florian Wirtz transfer speaks volumes
Liverpool confirmed the signing of top transfer target Florian Wirtz on Friday, having agreed a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign him for a British-record £116million fee Jurgen Klopp has offered his seal of approval to Liverpool's new £116million signing, Florian Wirtz. The German playmaker, 22, has joined the Reds on a five-year contract after completing a British-record move from Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz was Liverpool's top target going into the summer transfer window and they've managed to beat Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to his signature. The deal is comprised of £100m paid to Leverkusen upfront with a further £16m in potential add-ons. It's by far the biggest signing made since Klopp departed Anfield, with his successor, Arne Slot, having led the Reds to the Premier League title in his first season. Slot's reward is to work with a top talent like Wirtz and Klopp has no doubts that he'll be 'really, really great' on Merseyside. During an interview with to German broadcaster RTL, the former Liverpool boss was asked to give his verdict of the transfer. "It will be really, really great," Klopp replied. "I'm sure of it." The legendary manager went on to say: "It's very difficult to strengthen them when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed that. They've signed an exceptional talent in Florian Wirtz." Wirtz had the pick of some of Europe's best clubs but he and his family felt that Liverpool was the perfect next step. "I just thought that it was the right point in my career to make the next step and of course I wanted to get to a club that is from the top three in the world, and in my opinion Liverpool was one of them," the 31-time Germany international explained. "Yeah, I just saw myself in the best hands in Liverpool. I was really convinced by the people here, by the idea, and everything what the club offers me was really good. And in the end [it was] also easy to be excited for me to come to Liverpool. Will Florian Wirtz live up to his £116m price tag at Liverpool? Give us your prediction in the comments section. "It was not that easy for me, for sure, because I am a German player, I play for the Germany national team. So, it was not easy for me to decide but I think the talks with the coach and Richard [Hughes, Liverpool's sporting director] and everybody were, from the start or from the very first time, so good and it just kept going like this. "Every time I spoke to one of the [people from] the club I felt like, 'this is the place I want to be' and so in the end I was really 100 percent convinced I want to join Liverpool and it was the best choice." Brighton and Forest locked in Cuiabano transfer battle after three rejected bids
Brighton and Nottingham Forest are going head-to-head for Botafogo left-back Cuiabano, who is currently away at the Club World Cup Brighton are refusing to give up on the signing of Botafogo left-back Cuiabano - despite seeing three bids rejected for the 22-year-old Brazilian. Nottingham Forest have also attempted to sign Cuiabano and their interest in the player remains strong. The Tricky Trees have already agreed a £30million package deal with Botafogo for striker Igor Jesus and centre-back Jair Cunha, who will both move to the City Ground following their participation in the Club World Cup. However, so far, they've been unable to strike an agreement for Cuiabano and the race for his signature remains open. Brighton's latest offer was worth in the region of £7.7m including add-ons but it was still not enough to satisfy Botafogo's valuation. The defender has been used from the bench in both of Botafogo's Club World Cup fixtures including the impressive 1-0 scalp over European Champions PSG. Brighton are exploring the signing of a new left-back despite handing Tariq Lamptey a new contract as Pervis Estupinan has told the Seagulls that he's open to a new challenge. Estupinan told El Canal Del Futbol while away on international duty: 'The truth is they have been three years in Brighton with a lot of learning. But this will be a transfer market with a lot of movement. The club know that I would like to grow, that I would like to keep growing. 'The club have understood this. I've spoken to the club. The club have given me this bit of freedom to be able to make a decision. Now we will try to see better what is on the table and to see where we can go." Meanwhile, Forest boss Nuno Espírito Santo has signed a new three-year Nottingham Forest contract until the summer of 2028. The Portuguese boss guided the Tricky Trees to their highest league finish in 30 years to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. Next season will be the first time the City Ground has staged European football since the 1995-96 campaign. Nuno replaced previous boss Steve Cooper in December 2023 and later guided Forest to survival on the final day of the season before securing a seventh-place finish. Forest also reached the FA Cup semi-finals this term. The 51-year-old said upon penning his new deal: "I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club. "Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the club, which helped us achieve great things last season."

Man Utd chiefs backed into corner over four deals crippling Ruben Amorim budget
Manchester United are determined to push through a number of high-profile sales this summer to bolster Ruben Amorim's spending power but the process is already proving complex for the Old Trafford hierarchy Jadon Sancho's salary is once again complicating his Manchester United exit. Italian champions Napoli and Juventus are both courting the 25-year-old winger but currently, would only be willing to pursue a loan that would enable them to share a percentage of his wages, worth £250,000 per week plus bonuses, with United. The Red Devils are adamant another loan is not feasible and are pushing for a sale after Chelsea paid a £5million penalty clause to send the England international back to Old Trafford. It's understood Sancho is open to a new experience in Serie A having previously held discussions with Juventus last summer before a deal collapsed over financials. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford faces being left in limbo as Barcelona are working to finalise the arrival of Athletic Club attacker Nico Williams. Rashford has been holding out for a move to Catalonia following his six-month loan spell at Aston Villa but if Barca get the signing of Williams over the line, a deal looks off the table. Como are the latest club to make enquiries for £81.3m flop Antony but the Brazilian currently favours a return to Real Betis, who want to secure another loan for the 25-year-old. READ MORE: Antonio Conte makes statement about Man Utd transfer he did not think would happen United believe now is the perfect time to sell Antony following his eye-catching form in Spain, there has been loose interest from Bayer Leverkusen but his desire to rejoin Betis threatens to back the Red Devils into a corner. Earlier this month, Rasmus Hojlund also outlined his desire to stay and fight for his place at United while away on international duty with Denmark. Ruben Amorim is not actively looking to sell the 22-year-old but the Red Devils would be willing to sanction his departure for the right price if it enabled them to upgrade their forward options. Inter Milan were keen to explore a loan-to-buy deal which would have required United to take a significant hit on the £72m fee they paid Atalanta for the Dane in 2023 but they're now in advanced talks to sign Parma striker Ange-Yoan Bonny, instead. Hojlund's commitment to fulfilling his contract and potential under Amorim means a departure is not a given, particularly when sellable assets such as Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony actively want out. Rashford - valued at £40m - is willing to return to United training next month, if suitable offers for his services fail to materialise. It's been well documented that United must sell-to-buy following the £62.5m arrival of Matheus Cunha but to date, there has been little progress regarding departures.
