Footballer receives 13-match ban for homophobic slur towards opponent
Tranmere Rovers midfielder Sam Finley has been given a 13-game suspension for making a homophobic comment to an opposition player.
The 32-year-old admitted using 'abusive and or insulting' language towards Walsall forward Jamille Matt during a League Two match on January 11.
Finley was sent off during that game after just 38 minutes as Tranmere went on to lose 5-1.
The Tranmere midfielder has accepted the charge, which has resulted in the Football Assocation handing him a significant suspension, plus a £2,000 fine. He has also been ordered to complete an education programme.
The lengthy ban is one game above the 12-match limit for an aggravated breach involving 'abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour' because of Finley's previous offences.
In 2016, Finley received a four-match ban and a fine for a homophobic remark to a referee while playing for AFC Fylde.
Finley was also banned for eight games for an offensive comment to a Rochdale player when he was playing for Accrington Stanley in April 2020.
A statement from the FA read: 'An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a 13-match suspension, £2,000 fine and mandatory education programme on Sam Finley for a breach of FA Rule E3 during the EFL fixture between Tranmere Rovers and Walsall on Saturday 11 January 2025.
'It was alleged that the midfielder's language towards a Walsall player around the 23rd minute was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper contrary to FA Rule E3.1. More Trending
'It was further alleged that this constitutes an 'aggravated breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to sexual orientation.
'Sam Finley subsequently admitted the charge against him.'
A statement from Tranmere read: 'Finley's suspension will begin immediately. He has also been fined £2,000 and ordered to complete an education programme.
'The club condemns all forms of discrimination and will deal with the matter internally. '

Kevin Thomson opens up on Rangers coaching future as he insists ball is in new Ibrox regime's court
Thomson returned to Gers academy coaching set-up earlier this year Kevin Thomson admits he doesn't know if he will continue his role in the coaching set-up at Rangers next season. The former midfielder returned to the club back in January to work alongside U18s boss Steven Smith at Ibrox back in January after initially leaving Gers to become manager of Kelty Hearts back in 2021. Despite leading the Fife side to the League Two title in his first season, Thomson opted to step away from the job, turning his focus to media commitments. Thomson had been linked with a position on former teammate Barry Ferguson' s coaching team when the ex Light Blues captain replaced the sacked Philippe Clement back in February, but was omitted in favour of Neil McCann, Allan McGregor and Billy Dodds. New boss Russell Martin has been joined at Ibrox by one-time Rangers goalkeeper Matt Gilks and performance analyst Rhys Owen, who both worked with him at previous club Southampton. And with Thomson current contract with Rangers set to expire on June 30 - he says he is yet to learn if he will remain a part of the new owners 49ers Enterpises plans going forward. Speaking on BBC Sportsound. he said: "Obviously in that time there's been a takeover, a new manager. "My contract finished on June 30. As of yet I've not really had much dialogue with the club. "I'm just waiting to see what's what. "Moving forward, if there's an opportunity there then brilliant. "If there's not, then you know what I'm like, I just bash on and keep grafting away." Ker says Wrexham are all set to head to 'the Wild West'
A return to the second tier seemed an impossible dream during the Reds' decade-and-a-half non-league exile, however Phil Parkinson's side will be tackling the likes of Southampton, Sheffield United and Leicester City on an equal footing during the forthcoming campaign. Since being appointed into the hotseat by co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in July 2021, Parkinson has led Wrexham to three promotions and they are now preparing for a first tilt at the second tier in more than four decades. Looking ahead to the step-up to the Championship, Reds' community director Humphrey Ker told Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman on The Sports Agents podcast: "That was the Wild West for us! We always thought, League Two, League One, that's within our powers to deliver. "But, kind of, Championship... that's when you're swimming with the really big fish and Rob and Ryan - well, particularly Rob - had been going on about the Premier League. "Of course, we say... we talk about the Premier League, but really, you know, League One, let's focus on that and then, suddenly, here we are. "One promotion away from the Premier League. It's quite daunting in many respects." While the promotions have been celebrated by fans and players alike, they've also been well deserved, with plenty of hard work taking place behind the scenes. Ker added: "I think we do, collectively, pinch ourselves a lot. But then, ultimately, you find yourself going 'well yes, but of course we did work very hard' and we put the time in and we put in place our structure that we thought would get us to where we wanted to go. "Then (we) have been rewarded by, you know, you select the right people, you empower them, you support them and then, actually, it's not that surprising that they deliver in a way."
