Photograph: Andrew Boyers/Action Images/Reuters Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association in regards to comments he made about Jürgen Klopp. Coote was suspended from his role by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) in November after a video leaked online showing him making foul-mouthed comments about Klopp. The 42-year-old was sacked the following month after a second video, published by the Sun, allegedly showed him sniffing what appeared to be white powder. Coote has, however, been cleared of any gambling misconduct following claims he discussed issuing a yellow card to a player before the match in question. Coote denied the allegations, describing them as 'false and defamatory'. Coote was banned by Uefa in February from officiating in European competition until 30 June 2026. The previous month he said struggles with his sexuality contributed to the 'really poor choices' that cost him his job.

Shamed Premier League ref David Coote hit by FA charges over social media video
David Coote has been charged by the Football Association over his comments about former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, which emerged in a video leaked on social media. He has been cleared of misconduct related to gambling. The video, which appears to have been filmed several years ago during the Covid-19 pandemic and was posted on X in November, appears to feature Coote talking to a man while sitting on a sofa. In the footage, he allegedly called Liverpool "s***" and Klopp a "German c***". Coote was immediately suspended by the PGMOL after the video emerged. He was then sacked by the Premier League in December, with the PGMOL saying Coote's actions made his position "untenable". When he was suspended, the FA also launched an investigation into the official's conduct. That investigation has now concluded and has led to Coote being charged with acting in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words. Because Coote was discussing Klopp's nationality, the FA believe the threshold of an 'aggravated breach' has been met. It will now be up to Coote to either accept or fight the charge. An FA statement read: "David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jurgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1. "It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality. No charges have been issued in relation to allegations of gambling misconduct against David Coote, which were also fully investigated." Coote has been a Premier League referee since 2018, having overseen EFL games for eight years before that. He was sacked in December, with PGMOL insisting he had 'seriously breached' his contract. "David Coote's actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract," the PGMOL said. "Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare." The video appears to have been filmed the evening after a Liverpool game with the other man asking: "What did you think of the Liverpool game earlier?" Coote allegedly responded by saying: "Liverpool were s***." The other man then asked: "What do you think of Jurgen Klopp?" To which Coote replied: "C***. Absolute c***. "Aside from having a right pop at me when I refereed them against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying then had a right f****** pop at me." Referring to a second match in which he was acting as fourth official, he continued: "I've got no interest in speaking to someone who's f****** arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. James Milner's alright. "You can see me there [in a picture on his phone] with a mask on. Got to careful right, we're social distancing, we're two metres apart. But my God, German c***. F*** me." Coote then made a plea to whoever was being sent the video to not share it. He added: "Just to be clear, that f****** last video can't go anywhere. Seriously."

EFL star hit with 13-MATCH ban for 'discriminatory abuse regarding sexual orientation'
Tranmere Rovers midfielder Sam Finley has been hit with a lengthy suspension and a fine after he was found to have made a homophobic comment during his side's 5-1 defeat to Walsall League Two midfielder Sam Finley has received a 13-match suspension after he admitted to making an "abusive and/or insulting" comment towards Jamille Matt during a game between Tranmere Rovers and Walsall in January. The Tranmere star was sent off in the first-half of the game after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession, with Walsall going on to win the game 5-1 after Matt netted a brace. Finley has also been hit with a £2,000 fine and is required to complete an education programme following a hearing by the Football Assocation's independent regulatory commission. An FA statement read: "An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a 13-match suspension, £2,000 fine and mandatory education programme on Sam Finley for a breach of FA Rule E3 during the EFL League Two fixture between Tranmere Rovers and Walsall on Saturday 11 January 2025. "It was alleged that the midfielder's language towards a Walsall player around the 23rd minute was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper contrary to FA Rule E3.1. It was further alleged that this constitutes an 'aggravated breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to sexual orientation. "Sam Finley subsequently admitted the charge against him. The Regulatory Commission imposed his sanctions following a hearing." In a statement, Tranmere said the club "condemns all forms of discrimination and will deal with the matter internally". Players who are found guilty of an "aggravated breach" of FA rules regarding "abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour" typically receive a ban of between six and 12 games. However, Finley has been hit with a 13-match suspension because of previous offences. The 32-year-old was previously banned for four games and fined £250 back in 2016 after he was found to have made a homophobic comment towards a referee while playing for AFC Fylde. He also received an eight-match ban and an £850 fine after he was found to have made an offensive comment towards a Rochdale player while he was at Accrington Stanley in 2020. Tranmere are battling to stay up and currently sit four points above Carlisle United with two league games remaining. They will be back in action on Saturday when they host Crewe Alexandra and Tranmere boss Andy Crosby is confident his side have what it takes to stay up. "It will be great to be back home on Saturday, the crowd have been amazing with us home and away," Crosby said after Tranmere's 0-0 draw with Barrow on Monday. "We want Prenton Park rocking. "I want the crowd to be right behind the players. Those feelings aren't going to go away, they're going to intensity, but we've got good players and I want them to play with some freedom, to be themselves, trust themselves, be creative in the final third. "The players are giving everything. They desperately want to do so well for the club. Eleven games we set out what we wanted to do – no points total, just prepare for the next game, and that's exactly what we'll do for Saturday."
