Mazraoui: No Soda, More Minutes at Manchester United

Morocco World19-05-2025

Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui says cutting out fizzy drinks has helped him deliver the most consistent season of his career.
The Morocco international has made 55 appearances in all competitions this term – his highest-ever tally – surpassing his previous best of 48 for Ajax in the 2018–19 campaign.
'I'm not drinking any sodas anymore. Fizzy drinks. It changes a lot, I think, because the sugar, you don't get it in your body anymore. So, just water makes a huge difference eventually,' he said in an interview with the Daily Mail.
Mazraoui took the decision himself, rather than relying on advice. 'It was just to try to see if there's any difference,' he said. 'I know sugar is really bad for your body, but it's really nice to have a little drink of it with dinner.'
The 27-year-old, who joined United from Bayern Munich last summer for $17 million, has played 2,828 Premier League minutes – more than any United outfield player apart from Bruno Fernandes – and featured in seven different positions under head coach Ruben Amorim.
'To play No. 10? Yeah, it was a surprise,' he said. 'I did it a really long time ago before that moment.'
Mazaroui is still figuring out his roles as center-back and wing-back in Ruben Amorim's system. 'In the right center-back, I really like to go forward with the ball, so in the build-up and break the lines. I'm comfortable on the ball,' he said.
'Wing-back, a lot of times you come in a right wing position. For that, you really need like Amad one-v-one skill. That's maybe not my biggest strength.'
Mazraoui admitted adapting to Amorim's system took time, especially in his roles, but says the structure is now more familiar.
'In the beginning, some things were not going automatically… But after a couple of months, everybody knows what to do.'
Despite United's struggles in the league – they currently sit 16th after an eight-game winless run – Mazraoui believes victory in the upcoming Europa League final against Tottenham would define the season.
'Winning a trophy is never easy,' he said. 'If we win on Wednesday, I think that's what you're going to remember more than the failure in the Premier League.'
Should United beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, Mazraoui will 'of course' allow himself some alcohol-free sugary reward. Tags: Manchester UnitedmazraouiMorocco

FC Barcelona Signs Goalie Joan Garcia

Rabat – FC Barcelona have announced a deal with Joan Garcìa as their first signing of the season. The 24-year-old goalkeeper joined with a $25 release clause from city rivals Espanyol. The six-year contract runs until 2031 and was accepted by La Liga on Tuesday evening. García has attracted Premier League interest, especially from Arsenal. But, he chose to join Barcelona, becoming the first player to move directly from Espanyol since Igor Korneev in 1994, despite the intense rivalry between the two Catalan clubs. Barcelona's sporting director Deco called the clause 'a market steal.' Flick pushed for new competition after Barcelona conceded 39 league goals and 11 goals in the Champions League. García led the league with 146 saves and played every minute of Espanyol's 38 matches, helping the Espanyol avoid relegation. Analysts credited his sharp reflexes (73.7 % save rate). In Hansi Flick's second season, Barcelona wanted new goalkeeper options. They used Garcìa's low release clause, which didn't affect Financial Fair Play rules inside the club. García is seen as Ter Stegen's long-term replacement. Stegen's high salary, injuries, and poor form led Barcelona to look for a new goalkeeper. Although he's the captain and under contract until 2028, the club is now pushing him to leave. With García's arrival, Flick now has four goalkeepers: Ter Stegen, García, Szczęsny, and Iñaki Peña. But the club knows that this strong lineup can't continue. Either Szczęsny or Peña is expected to leave before the transfer window closes. Tags: FC BarcelonaFC Barcelona and Real Madrid

Wydad Casablanca's Mehdi Benabid Shows Resilience as Man City Registers Victory

Rabat — Manchester City registered its first win during the FIFA Club World Cup, taking on Morocco's Wydad Casablanca – the only Moroccan club representing the country during the competition. Phil Foden scored the first goal for Manchester United in the second minute of the match. Morocco's superstar Nordin Amrabat exerted his magic, playing both in defense and the attacking field to level up the team's performance during the competition. In the 31st minute of the game, Wydad Casablanca missed a huge opportunity to score an equalizer as Thembinkosi Lorch lost balance in the penalty area. During the first half, Wydad Casablanca showed glimpses of hesitation, with players often circling the penalty area whenever Manchester City had possession. The Moroccan club, however, showed some balance and caution, wary of Guariola's attacking system. Wydad Casablanca's goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid, played an expected role, intervening in key moments to halt some of the opponent's dangerous attempts. In the 42nd minute of the game, however, Manchester City strengthened its position with a second goal from a corner shot seized by Jeremy Doku. Manchester City faced challenges as Wydad Casablanca put five players in defense. The English club's first goal, however, made it easier for the team to play comfortably and at ease during the first half. The second goal gave them control over the match. Despite the defeat, Wydad Casablanca was cheered on by its fanbase, who chanted different slogans and chants – including the famous 'ole, ole, ole.. Wydad, Wydad.' Manchester City's Foden celebrated the win, saying he is happy with the three points secured during the competition. Meanwhile, Wydad Casablanca's Meijers Bart said, 'It's a good start in the tournament,' expressing pride for being part of the team.

Kevin De Bruyne Set to Join Napoli

Rabat – Kevin De Bruyne is on the verge of ending a decade at Manchester City after reaching a verbal agreement to join Napoli on a free transfer once his contract expires on 30 June. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano says final paperwork is being completed today, clearing the path for the Belgian player to become Antonio Conte's headline signing of the summer. The 33-year-old will fly to Napoli on Thursday for medical tests before signing a two-year contract that includes an option for a third season. According to multiple Italian outlets, the contract will pay about €6 million net per year for the first two campaigns, dropping to €5 million in the optional third, plus a signing-on bonus befitting his free-agent status. De Bruyne departs England as one of the Premier League's defining players: 422 appearances, 108 goals and 177 assists for City, with six league titles and the club's first Champions League crown on his career. Even in an injury-interrupted 2024-25 season, he produced 4 goals and 7 assists in 28 Premier League matches, still averaging a direct goal involvement every 155 minutes. Napoli coach Antonio Conte, who won Serie A in his debut season, sees De Bruyne as the creative core to reinforce his 4-3-3 formation. The Belgian can drop deep alongside Scott McTominay and Andre Anguissa to control the tempo, or push forward behind Lukaku to break defenses. For Napoli, the move is opportunistic. By bringing a Champions League-winning playmaker without paying a transfer fee, if De Bruyne delivers a bit of his Etihad form, he can help Napoli defend their Serie A title and mount a deep Champions League run.
