Liverpool make damning Darwin Nunez decision after transfer U-turn
Darwin Nunez looks likely to leave Liverpool this summer, with reigning Serie A champions Napoli interested in bringing the striker to Naples to provide support for Romelu Lukaku
Liverpool have reportedly lowered their asking price for Darwin Nunez, with the Reds keen to quickly seal the forward's exit. Liverpool broke their transfer record when they forked out around £85million to sign Nunez from Benfica back in 2022.
However, he has struggled for game time under Arne Slot, with the Uruguay international making just eight Premier League starts last season. He also struggled in front of goal, netting just seven times in 47 appearances across all competitions.
And Slot publicly criticised Nunez's attitude and work-rate after a disappointing miss against Aston Villa in February. "For the second time in a row I wasn't happy with his work effort, against Wolves and against Villa," Slot said at the time.
"I always try to be honest with my players and be honest as I can to you guys as well where I always try to protect my players so I don't say he never worked hard. I know him differently. I know him at Villa at home where he made a 100 metre sprint and scored a goal, I know him when he came on at City at home and was pressing really aggressively and wins the ball back and we score.
"But I can't accept if a player doesn't give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once but twice was a bit too much."
As a result, Nunez has been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield this summer and reports from Italy claim that Liverpool are willing to accept offers of around €50m (£42.7m) plus add-ons for the striker.
Liverpool did reject an approach from Al-Nassr in the January transfer window, despite the Saudi Pro League side being willing to pay around £70m for Nunez. The report adds that Napoli have already made an offer worth around €43m (£37m) and are hoping to conclude a deal soon.
Napoli claimed their fourth Serie A title under Antonio Conte last season and are moving to strengthen their squad ahead of their defence, having already signed Kevin De Bruyne on a free transfer from Manchester City.
Romelu Lukaku was their leading goalscorer last season, netting 14 league goals in 36 games, and Napoli are keen to take some of the burden off the former Chelsea and Manchester United striker.
Victor Osimhen is expected to be sold by Napoli this summer, having spent last season out on loan at Galatasaray. The Turkish side are hoping to sign him permanently, but Manchester United have also been linked with the 26-year-old.

Kylian Mbappe leaves hospital after missing Real Madrid's first Club World Cup match with acute gastroenteritis
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has left hospital after missing his side's first game at the newly-expanded Club World Cup after suffering from gastroenteritis. Mbappe, 26, was a surprise omission from the first starting line-up to be named by new manager Xabi Alonso against Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal on Wednesday. The Frenchman was sorely missed by his team-mates as they drew 1-1 after Federico Valverde missed a golden chance to win the encounter in stoppage time when his penalty was saved. Following the match, Madrid released a statement on Thursday in which they clarified why Mbappe was absent. The club said that he had been taken to hospital on the day of their match against Al-Hilal to undergo tests, adding that he had made a return to the team's camp. On Friday, Real also confirmed that Mbappe was in the team hotel and undertaking aerobic work as he recovered from illness. Manager Xabi Alonso is unsure if he will be fit enough to feature in his side's next game When prompted to give an update on Mbappe's health on Tuesday, Alonso said: 'Kylian was feeling a bit better in the morning, but not good enough because it's too hot. 'We're going to wait for him until the last moment, we'll decide tomorrow.' After the draw against Al-Hilal, the Spaniard added: 'I don't know if Mbappe will be back for the next game. 'We'll see. He wasn't doing well in the last two days. He's sick.' In Mbappe's place, Alonso opted to start 21-year-old striker Gonzalo Garcia who scored 25 goals in 36 matches for Real Madrid Castilla last season. He notched the opener against Al-Hilal on Wednesday before former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves ensured the spoils were shared.

Manchester City open to letting Ilkay Gündogan join Galatasaray
Galatasaray are considering a move for Ilkay Gündogan, with Manchester City open to a transfer for the 34-year-old midfielder. The Turkish club are believed to have inquired about Gündogan's availability in the winter window but City did not want him to leave midway through the season. But with Pep Guardiola having signed Nico González in February and Tijjani Reijnders in this window, with Rodri again fit after a serious knee injury and Mateo Kovacic expected back from an achilles problem in mid-September, game time for Gündogan may be limited. Although the one-year extension on Gündogan's contract was triggered towards the end of last season after he played a certain number of minutes, he may be allowed to leave without a fee. The German, whose parents were born in Turkey, is believed to have a desire to play for Galatasaray, the Super Lig champions. The former Germany international, who turns 35 in October, suggested he still had much to offer. 'There seems to be a trend at the moment in football where people are saying: 'This player is too old,' or: 'Another one cannot run any more.' But we always have had this in football. 'You need experienced players on the pitch. I know that when I was 18 or 19 I was looking up to those experienced players. Just by watching what they did – and how they did it – I learned. It wasn't always necessary for them to say anything. All young players need some experience around them. Sometimes you don't have to work harder but work smarter.'
