Homes Under the Hammer's Martin Roberts says 'I failed on every level'

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts has been working to transform a rural Welsh pub into a tourist destination, but the building is still in dire need of renovation
Homes Under the Hammer star Martin Roberts openly confessed to hitting rock bottom in his latest endeavour, as he struggles with the mammoth task of converting a down-at-heel Welsh pub into a holiday hotspot. Currently faced with the enormous challenge of refurbishing the rural Hendrewen Hotel in Rhondda Valley, the premises are far from ready, with parts of the building close to collapse.
Once confident that a two-year timeline and a £500,000 budget would suffice to revive the eight-bedroom inn, 61 year old Roberts now finds himself dealing with major delays two years into the renovation. Speaking to The Sun, he shared: "I'm still smiling but, oh my word, what a challenge it's been."

He candidly admitted: "I'll be honest, it's the first commercial property I've ever done. There have been lots of residential houses and flats, but commercial properties have a lot more complications."
Roberts estimates that the project is about "60%" complete and remains optimistic that the work will "come together really quickly" as he approaches the home stretch. His goal is to have the doors open by next Easter at the absolute latest, subject to overcoming hurdles such as planning permission related to local flood risks.
The TV personality recounted the numerous obstacles he's encountered, saying there were "lots of hoops to jump through", and initially finding the building plagued by slanted walls, collapsing windows, and bats roosting in a leaking roof, reports the Express.
In a surprising twist, Roberts revealed he hadn't even shared the news with his wife Kirsty about purchasing the dilapidated pub while in Wales recuperating from a heart operation.
The local watering hole is set to become the star of a ten-part ITV documentary series next year, cheekily titled Oops!

I Bought A Pub. Taking inspiration from Jeremy Clarkson, plans are afoot to dangle a Rolls-Royce upside down from the dining room ceiling, mirroring the chrome tractor feature at Jeremy's establishment, The Farmer's Dog.
Guests will have the chance to stay in one of the venue's eight uniquely themed bedrooms, each named after different TV shows and designed with an "individual feel".
There's also a new bar and restaurant in the works for the property.

The pub aims to bring about 30 jobs to the area, including a teaching kitchen where celebrity chefs will impart their knowledge to the youth.
And for those with musical aspirations, there will be a stage area to showcase their talents.

Fans stunned as they spot Simon Cowell cycling around South London with no security as they quiz lost star on his safety

SOUTH London locals were left shocked as they spotted Simon Cowell cycling by himself on a busy high street. The media mogul and BGT judge even had the gobsmacked fans panicking for his safety as he went without a helmet for the bike ride and admitted to being "lost" to passers-by. 6 6 6 In a clip shared by one stunned pair to TikTok, Simon can be seen pulling up next to their car on his bicycle as he stops for a quick chat with the inquisitive fans. Despite the heatwave currently sweeping the UK, with temperatures largely staying above 30 degrees in the capital over the weekend, Simon opted to wear a large puffer coat for his cycle. As he pulled alongside the car, a man from inside the vehicle shouted out: "Yes Simon!" His companion was left in utter disbelief at the celebrity encounter as she said to the former The X Factor judge: "Are you really on a bike, I can't believe it. "Why are you like this?," she beckoned to him. She then questioned if he was "scared" travelling solo on the busy roads of South London. Looking bemused Simon then revealed how he'd actually got lost on his travels but appeared to be going in the right direction now. He said to the fans: "Well, I got lost but it [the bike] is quicker!" Wishing him well, the perplexed woman added: "Please just go with God, okay?! "We love you Simon, yeah man, bye darling." Watch the moment 'cocky' BGT singer claps back at Simon Cowell after dodgy Freddie Mercury tribute - leaving fans fuming- Simon then flashed the duo a smile and put his thumb up before biking off in front of their car. The clip went viral on TikTok racking up just shy of half a million likes. Fans were instantly left questioning his safety as they praised the woman in the clip for making sure to check if he was okay. One wrote in the comments section of the clip: "I love how nice the lady was in this video. It was just all about him and his safety." 6 6 As another asked: "Whys he just out? no security?" Someone else went on to write: "Why does he have a PUFFER jacket in this weather." A fourth penned: "Why is man wearing a puffer jacket in this heat." Whilst another said with a laughing face emoji: "Asking Simon Cowell 'why he's like this' like he's your brother or something." Simon hasn't had the best luck when it comes to using bikes and has previously suffered a serious injury after taking a tumble from one just a few years ago. The Sun told how in 2020 he was almost left paralysed and was left needing surgery after hurting his back in a shocking accident. He crashed off his electric bike and broke his back in three places before undergoing six hours of surgery. He missed injuring his spinal cord by a centimetre. A source said at the time: 'He could have been looking at a life in a wheelchair.' Simon Cowell fell and broke his back after trying out a powerful new electric bike — and accidentally pulling a wheelie. His son Eric, then aged six, and his partner Lauren Silverman's teenage lad Adam watched in horror as Simon fell backwards and smashed down onto a concrete floor at his Los Angeles home. 6

Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster 'held responsible' for spoiling radio host's proposal plans

Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster's wedding anniversary celebrations this weekend brought up an awkward memory for a Heart Radio presenter as he explained the famous pair spoiled his proposal plans. Sir Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster have been accused of spoiling a Heart Radio presenter's proposal plans. To mark their 18th wedding anniversary this week, the pair boarded the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express to revisit their engagement, wedding and honeymoon spots. Six years into dating in 2005, the Maggie May hitmaker got down on one knee at the top of the Eiffel Tower. They tied the knot in a small town just outside of Portofino, Italy two years later. ‌ Their 2007 wedding was followed by a honeymoon off the coast, which included celebrations on a yacht. Discussing the couple's anniversary on Heart Radio's Breakfast Show on Friday, Jamie Theakston hilariously accused Rod of ruining his own proposal plan. ‌ Around the same time that the singer asked Penny for her hand in marriage, the presenter recalled being on a train to Paris with his then girlfriend Sophie, who he was about to pop the question to. Jamie explained his plan had been to propose to his now wife on the Eiffel Tower, until he discovered her true feelings about that idea, Glasgow Live reports. Speaking to his co-stars Amanda Holden and Ashley Roberts, he said: "I thought the Eiffel Tower might be romantic, at the Eiffel Tower, on one knee, pop the question, job done. "It was a beautiful weekend, the sun was shining, we'd been to Paris a couple of times before, so it was a special place." ‌ Jamie recalled how "nervous" he was about getting the ring he had secretly packed through customs without Sophie seeing it, which was thankfully a success. However, his next problem came when he had to rethink his proposal plan. He explained: "Anyway, she's reading a copy of Hello! Magazine, she goes, 'OMG. Do you know Rod Stewart has just got engaged to Penny Lancaster?' I said, 'Oh, really?' ‌ "She said, 'How naff is this, they did it in Paris on the Eiffel Tower'." After Amanda and Ashley expressed their shock, he admitted he debated whether to scrap the plan completely. ‌ However, he decided to go ahead with the proposal but carried it out in a more private setting - their hotel room. He joked: "It wasn't as special as it might've been. So essentially, I hold Rod and Penny personally responsible for the complete collapse of my wedding proposal." While the engagement he had imagined didn't quite go to plan, the main thing was that Sophie gladly accepted his proposal. ‌ The pair went on to wed in Ditchling, Sussex and now have two sons together; Sidney, 17, and Kit, 16. As for Rod and Penny, the Loose Women star is the singer's third wife who he has two sons with; Alastair, 19, and Aiden, 14. Sir Rod has eight kids in total across five different women. His other children are Sarah, 61, Kimberly, 45, Sean, 44, Ruby, 38, Renee, 33, Liam, 30. Before Penny, he was married to Alana Stewart from 1979 to 1984, followed by Rachel Hunter from 1990 to 2006.

Justin Timberlake fans gutted after Isle of Wight set 'not allowed' on TV

Justin Timberlake fans hoping to watch his Isle of Wight Festival performance on Sky were left disappointed on Sunday night. The American popstar, 44, has four UK number one singles to his name and was one of the biggest names who headlined the festival in 2025. He was joined at the top of the bill over the weekend by the likes of legendary Police frontman Sting and Welsh chart-topping band Stereophonics. Fans who hadn't been able to see the Rock Your Body hitmaker in person had hoped to catch coverage of his set on Sky Arts, which now has a partnership with the festival. But they were made to go without on Sunday night when it was confirmed live on air that Sky Arts wouldn't be able to broadcast Justin's set from Seaclose Park. Edith Bowman, hosting Sky's TV coverage from the festival, let fans and viewers know that the channel wasn't allowed to broadcast any footage from Justin's set. While an official statement wasn't read out on air, users on social media and dedicated TV forums speculated as to the reasons why the SexyBack singer's set was kept private. @MissTracey_Dav commented on X: 'Edith Bowman has confirmed Sky are not allowed to show the Justin Timberlake set – he'll never get booked for Glastonbury then!' @DarryBunne said: 'Sky Arts not showing the Justin Timberlake set tonight at the Isle of Wight Festival (through no fault of theirs by all accounts).' Elsewhere, @TheGlamaMama explained her disappointment: 'Gutted that Sky Arts aren't broadcasting Justin Timberlake. Why?' On Facebook, Edward Coppock asked: 'Anyone one know why they're not showing the final day Isle of Wight Festival headline act Justin Timberlake on Sky TV on Sky Arts tonight?' On the Digital Spy forums, user Dodrade asked, 'Are Sky showing Justin Timberlake's set tonight? He isn't listed on the EPG?' to which they were told that the set would not be broadcast. ManUtdFan17 told Dodrade, 'Nope. Edith just confirmed at start of broadcast,' before speculating whether the decision had been made by Justin's team. FlakeWhip then expanded the discussion to speculate that 'certain acts insist on not being televised, or having control over what is televised, if they so wish'. This weekend will see Neil Young headline Glastonbury, with fans of the legendary rock musician unsure whether his set from the Pyramid Stage will go out on the BBC. More Trending Earlier this year, the 79-year-old music icon surprised everyone by saying he was pulling out of the festival after finding out that the BBC was a 'partner in Glastonbury and wanted us to do things in a way we were not interested in'. However, Neil retracted that statement and said: 'Due to an error in the information received, I had decided to not play the Glastonbury festival, which I always have loved. 'Happily, the festival is now back on our itinerary and we look forward to playing! Hope to see you there! Love, Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts' View More » Metro has contacted Isle of Wight Festival for information. Got a story?
