Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster 'held responsible' for spoiling radio host's proposal plans
Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster's wedding anniversary celebrations this weekend brought up an awkward memory for a Heart Radio presenter as he explained the famous pair spoiled his proposal plans.
Sir Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster have been accused of spoiling a Heart Radio presenter's proposal plans. To mark their 18th wedding anniversary this week, the pair boarded the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express to revisit their engagement, wedding and honeymoon spots.
Six years into dating in 2005, the Maggie May hitmaker got down on one knee at the top of the Eiffel Tower. They tied the knot in a small town just outside of Portofino, Italy two years later.
Their 2007 wedding was followed by a honeymoon off the coast, which included celebrations on a yacht. Discussing the couple's anniversary on Heart Radio's Breakfast Show on Friday, Jamie Theakston hilariously accused Rod of ruining his own proposal plan.
Around the same time that the singer asked Penny for her hand in marriage, the presenter recalled being on a train to Paris with his then girlfriend Sophie, who he was about to pop the question to.
Jamie explained his plan had been to propose to his now wife on the Eiffel Tower, until he discovered her true feelings about that idea, Glasgow Live reports.
Speaking to his co-stars Amanda Holden and Ashley Roberts, he said: "I thought the Eiffel Tower might be romantic, at the Eiffel Tower, on one knee, pop the question, job done.
"It was a beautiful weekend, the sun was shining, we'd been to Paris a couple of times before, so it was a special place."
Jamie recalled how "nervous" he was about getting the ring he had secretly packed through customs without Sophie seeing it, which was thankfully a success.
However, his next problem came when he had to rethink his proposal plan.
He explained: "Anyway, she's reading a copy of Hello! Magazine, she goes, 'OMG. Do you know Rod Stewart has just got engaged to Penny Lancaster?' I said, 'Oh, really?'
"She said, 'How naff is this, they did it in Paris on the Eiffel Tower'."
After Amanda and Ashley expressed their shock, he admitted he debated whether to scrap the plan completely.
However, he decided to go ahead with the proposal but carried it out in a more private setting - their hotel room.
He joked: "It wasn't as special as it might've been. So essentially, I hold Rod and Penny personally responsible for the complete collapse of my wedding proposal."
While the engagement he had imagined didn't quite go to plan, the main thing was that Sophie gladly accepted his proposal.
The pair went on to wed in Ditchling, Sussex and now have two sons together; Sidney, 17, and Kit, 16.
As for Rod and Penny, the Loose Women star is the singer's third wife who he has two sons with; Alastair, 19, and Aiden, 14.
Sir Rod has eight kids in total across five different women. His other children are Sarah, 61, Kimberly, 45, Sean, 44, Ruby, 38, Renee, 33, Liam, 30.
Before Penny, he was married to Alana Stewart from 1979 to 1984, followed by Rachel Hunter from 1990 to 2006.

Penny Lancaster admits Sir Rod Stewart left quite nervous after her surprising career change
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Penny Lancaster shared on the We're not getting any younger podcast — hosted by Lisa Snowden and Andy Goldstein — that her husband Sir Rod Stewart was quite nervous when she started as a volunteer member of the police service. Recounting her experiences to the hosts, the 54-year-old said that Sir Rod, 80, was slightly worried about her night shifts. During the podcast chat, Loose Women star Penny explained her role as special constable, which she's been doing for around four years, all kicked off after participating in a TV programme. Eager to expand her involvement, she opted to undergo additional training and dedicate more time to supporting the force. Penny, used to work as a model, also admitted that she'd made two arrests in her short policing career, reports Glasgow Live. Describing how it all began, she said: "I'm a special constable. I did a TV show called Famous and Fighting Crime and they had a bunch of household names involved in this TV show that was based in Cambridgeshire and I was located in Peterborough. "Police officers can only police with the consent of the public, but the public are the police and the police are the public. "It's very hard to remind the public and to gain their trust because there's so many negative things out there about policing and I always see myself as the positive face of policing." Penny added: "So, I was on the frontline with regular police officers and specials seeing all the work they do. And even though there were some really scary moments I was just hooked on it. I got such a buzz and I felt like this was my calling." In her role as a special constable, Penny explained that she volunteers at least 200 hours a year, typically one night shift a week, and is accompanied by a colleague. Sir Rod Stewart, who is appearing at Glastonbury Festival this weekend, was apparently "absolutely s****** himself" according to Penny. Penny explained: "He was, he was. I've been doing it for four years now so he's kind of got used to it and he's met a lot of my colleagues and he respects the amount of training I've done." Regarding her experience with making arrests, Penny shared: "I have, two people, for drink driving and drug driving. Every accident you have to test for drink and drugs. It is an adrenaline rush...I wasn't arresting on live TV."

I'm a travel agent - I couldn't WAIT to leave this popular tourist destination after horrible ordeal that proves the place gets worse every time you go
A travel agent has revealed all the reasons she couldn't wait to leave Egypt, after being 'constantly hassled' while holidaying at the tourist hotspot. Penny, who posts as @pennygoestravelling on Instagram, has taken to the social media site to share her bad experiences with the Midde East country. In a video, she can be seen boarding a plane out of Egypt, looking very excited, along with the caption: 'Reasons why I couldn't WAIT to leave Egypt'. She writes: I've been to Egypt multiple times and each time, my experience worsens. 'I've found the constant lying, hassling for money and scamming culture so exhausting. 'Nothing that was done for us either by tour guides or hotel staff was done as part of general good service but instead was all for a way to extract extra cash on top of what was already paid.' In the video, Penny shares several different ways she was 'hassled' for money in Egypt, claiming the first incident happened at the airport, 'as soon as we landed'. She adds: 'Got scammed by a fake Uber driver. Then got scammed by the real Uber driver.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Penny - Travel Agent (@pennygoestravelling) The video then cuts to a clip of Penny trapped inside an Egyptian tomb, along with the caption: 'Trapped in a tomb for tips.' An Egyptian local can then be seen trying to sell Penny and her friends something as they're trying to get in a car. Penny adds: 'Constantly hassled by locals selling bookmarks, figurines, any old junk for $$, then being met with aggression when we said NO.' The next frustrating part of Penny's Egypt holiday was after she 'paid for a 'luxury cruise down the Nile'' only to end up 'on a dirty old boat driven by a 12-year-old boy'. Penny also claims she was 'sent into a shop by our tour guide and trapped in the store to buy something – TWICE'. Her frustrations even continued up to when she was at the airport to leave Egypt. She says she and her friends had 'airport searches on repeat, requiring personal info and/or money before bags returned,' and were also forced to 'walk miles to the airport lounge which we were told was free, as Amex Platinum card holders, only to then be demanded to pay €175 [£150] for access'. Another reason Penny isn't a fan of Egypt, she says, is the 'hours of haggling'. She finishes: 'If you are low on confidence and have lots of spare cash, don't mind being ogled at, cat called, being constantly asked for money in return for nothing, and if you enjoy your personal space being invaded, then Egypt is perfect. Otherwise, get back on the plane' She explains: 'Prices always start off insanely high whatever you're buying (massages started at €305 [£261] and, after an hour of haggling, prices were agreed at €25 [£21]) and it's time consuming and soul destroying to spend so much of our vacation bartering. 'Nothing is priced reasonably anywhere.' Aside from the money culture, Penny insists 'Egypt is not for the faint hearted woman'. She adds: 'Men will stare and say obscene things to you - I'm not sure what reaction they hope to achieve but nevertheless, these constant comments and looks can make you feel uncomfortable. 'Even though I was travelling with four men it seems that doesn't put the locals off.' She finishes: 'If you are low on confidence and have lots of spare cash, don't mind being ogled at, cat called, being constantly asked for money in return for nothing, and if you enjoy your personal space being invaded, then Egypt is perfect. 'Otherwise, get back on the plane.'
