Londoners take graffiti covered Tube trains into their own hands

A group of people took Tube graffiti into their own hands by giving carriages a scrub themselves.
Recent months have seen a dramatic increase in defaced carriages, with Underground trains frequently seen covered with graffiti both on the inside and outside.
Joe Reeve, from Looking for Growth, led a team to spruce up trains on Sunday morning.
He told Metro: 'We are seeing this [graffiti] every single day. I take the Bakerloo Line every day. I see someone push through the barriers, and then every carriage is covered in graffiti.
'It's one of the those things that bugs people.'
He added: 'Londoners are fed up and the cavalry is here. We are not going away.'
His team used an environmentally friendly water-based graffiti remover to clear the writing plastered all over the carriages, including on the doors, floors and ceilings.
But he explained that while some stains came off on the first wipe, others took far longer to remove, suggesting they had been left for weeks.
He said: 'It comes off in the first wipe if it's under a week. When the graffiti's older it sticks more. By not dealing with it right away, it makes it much harder and more expensive to remove it later.'
They're hoping to return to the fleet on Tuesday, and this time Joe hopes they will cover a full carriage every 30 minutes.
In the last few months, graffiti has become a common sight on the Tube in recent months, specifically on the Bakerloo and Central lines.
Both happen to have some of the oldest rolling stock on the network, with Bakerloo line trains having been continuously in service since 1970 – the oldest fleet still operating in Britain today.

But the problem has spread onto other lines and newer trains, with even the brand new Piccadilly Line stock, which has yet to begin service, covered in artwork on arrival from Germany last year.
Many commuters have said the graffiti reminds them of the New York Subway in the 1980s, when the system was well-know for being hotspot for crime and tagging.
London Assembly member Bassam Mahfouz said that as well as making trains look a 'complete eyesore' the artwork was making passengers feel less safe.
He said: 'If it is removed within a reasonable period of time, then that minimises the number of people who see it and therefore, there is no point putting even the sliver of effort to my artwork if it's not going to be seen, and I'll move somewhere else.
Last month, TfL explained that a faulty automatic train washer was partly responsible for the uptick in graffiti visible on trains, but later clarified that the problem had been rectified.
However commuters are increasingly convinced the problem is a symptom of the network's ageing rolling stock, with some suggesting that a shortage of trains on both lines means TfL is unable to take sets out of service to rid them of graffiti.
One user commented on Reddit: 'TfL's current budget constraints means less money is being spent on low-level maintenance requirements such as graffiti removal, so it's not being removed much, and more graffiti is encouraging more graffiti and so on.'
Another factor is the lack of CCTV coverage on both lines, with the exception of some refurbished Central Line trains, so vandals are rarely caught on camera. More Trending
Joe blames a combination of poor procurement and management at the top, in particular the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
TfL said that it works to remove graffiti quickly, but added that where it cannot be wiped down easily it is covered wherever possible before being attended to during engineering hours, in order to keep trains in service.
Siwan Hayward, director of security, policing and enforcement said: 'The safety of our customers and staff is our top priority. We are working closely with the police to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour on the network, with over 2,500 police and police community support officers and 500 TfL enforcement staff patrolling the network at all times.
'We work hard to ensure that our customers and staff feel safe when travelling on the network and continue to strengthen our capability to deter and detect fare evaders and ensure our trains and stations remain a pleasant and clean environment for passengers.'

The decades-old fibreglass play equipment was taken away from Trevor Robinson's home after complaints from neighbours, he claims. The 71-year-old had the 8ft tall slide delivered after spotting sub-contractors preparing to remove it from a nearby leisure park in Gillingham, Kent, two months ago. Trevor had initially planned to create a pond in his back garden for the slide, nicknamed Ellie, so children in the neighbourhood could use it. But Ellie was too heavy to carry into the back garden, so the retired forklift driver assembled it in his driveway instead. Now, Medway Council has removed it after multiple complaints and has deemed it an 'unsafe' structure. Trevor said: 'I saw them taking it away [from the leisure park] and said, 'no I will have it.' They thought I was joking. Then he delivered it to my house for free. 'People loved it. I wanted to let kids and their parents come round and use it and give the money to charity.' Trevor had hatched a plan to use a crane to lift Ellie over his house to become the 'crowning glory' of his collection of garden ornaments. However, on Thursday last week, one of the subcontractors came by, saying that due to neighbour complaints, the council had ordered him to take the slide away, he claims. Trevor, who has been attending the Strand leisure park – Ellie's former home – since he was a child, says that the elephant is part of his fondest memories. Now, the self-proclaimed 'eccentric' says that he is willing to pay anything to get Ellie back – even to give up one of his Jaguar cars. 'I think it is diabolical. All the kids loved it. If they haven't broken it up, then I will pay to get it back. I miss it; it has been a part of my life for so long,' he said. 'Everyone is really upset that it is gone. I want to get it back, I don't care what it costs. I will pay any money – I just want her back. If they let me have it back, then they can have my Jaguar.' More Trending The pensioner said he believes 'jealousy' and a dislike for the Union Flag, which is painted on the slide, resulted in the tragic result. 'It was painted with Union Jacks on the side. There are a few neighbours who don't like me, but all their kids were waiting to have a go on it,' he said. A Medway Council spokesperson said: 'During our annual health and safety audit of The Strand, the slide, which is now more than 30 years old, was not deemed to be safe, so we took the decision to remove it. 'Medway Norse arranged for a subcontractor to remove the structure. Once we became aware that a resident had the slide following complaints, we arranged for it to be picked up so it could be safely disposed of, as it is an unsafe structure.' Neil Cotton, 57, works as a school crossing patrol officer in Howden, East Riding of Yorkshire, where he had been giving local pupils high-fives at a busy turning known locally as Cross Keys Corner. But he has been told by his local council that the gesture could prevent children from learning to cross the road safely. East Riding of Yorkshire Council said an officer had reminded Mr Cotton of 'the need not to have distractions' while crossing. And in a now-deleted social media post, Mr Cotton reportedly wrote that drivers were also frustrated about having to wait extra time at the crossing. 'I have been instructed that I can no longer high-five children any more whilst crossing the road,' he wrote, according to the BBC. 'This is because it upsets some drivers having to wait another 10 seconds.' Local lorry driver Andy Heath, 49, told Metro that he passes the corner sometimes when Mr Cotton is working. 'It's not delaying me as a driver at all,' he said. 'It's political correctness gone mad.' 'He helps the truckers out as its a blind corner and he lets us know if it's safe to proceed or not,' Mr Heath added. 'He always seems to have a cheerful disposition.' Lollipop men and women have the power to stop traffic to help adults and children cross the road. The workers, also known as school crossing patrols, usually tell drivers to stop using their round 'stop' sign, and motorists must do so by law. Current legislation does account for high-fives, but parents and children are still advised by local councils to stay aware when crossing the road with a lollipop person's help. And they should not follow them into the road until the traffic has stopped on both sides. Penny Walker, a Facebook user, posted on a local community board that Mr Cotton is a 'lovely man who loves what he does the kids respect him'. 'I say leave him alone,' she added. Another user, Becky Barlow, said: 'I can't imagine being so miserable to complain about him giving high fives to kids. 'And why on earth the decision was made to side with those misery complaints is beyond me. 'My kids look up to him. We tell them he keeps everyone safe and they love seeing him. 'He's teaching kids to cross safely, we should be encouraging it, not taking away from it.' Kirsty Wilcox told BBC Look North: 'I think it's wrong. Why shouldn't he, what's wrong with it? A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said that lollipop men like Mr Cotton are 'pillars of the community, and do a very important job'. But they added: 'It is vitally important that children learn to cross the road safely, concentrating without any distractions, walking carefully and being vigilant of the traffic. 'In this particular case, one of our officers spoke with this crossing patrol and simply reminded them of the need not to have distractions while children are crossing.'
