Vietnam celebrates groundbreaking of US$300mil tech hub in Hanoi

HANOI (Vietnam News/ANN): Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on June 1 attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hanoi CMC Creative Space (CCS Hanoi), a US$300 million technology complex hailed as a key part of Vietnam's push for innovation and digital transformation.
The project, led by private firm CMC Technology & Solution, located on an 11,000 sq.m site in Hanoi, will feature 23 floors above ground and three basements, with a total floor space exceeding 90,000 sq.m.
Following the success of CMC's first creative space in Ho Chi Minh City - CCS Tan Thuan, this second facility will serve as an open artificial intelligence centre, dubbed C.OpenAI. It aims to house a comprehensive tech ecosystem, including a state-of-the-art data centre, research and development labs, training facilities, and a startup incubation zone, employing over 5,000 engineers.
At the heart of the complex is the CMC Data Centre, designed to deploy cutting-edge technologies in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, big data, and next-generation networks. The C.OpenAI ecosystem will also integrate 25 core technologies developed by CMC.
In his address, PM Chinh praised the project as a testament to the private sector's role in advancing Vietnam's technological ambitions, aligning with the Party's policy of making breakthroughs in sci-tech, innovation, and digital transformation.
With Vietnam targeting at least 8% economic growth in 2025 and double-digit expansion thereafter, he called for national unity to drive prosperity, safeguard its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
He urged CMC to lead in sci-tech, innovation and digital transformation, inspiring other businesses, educational establishments, and research centres, particularly young people, to contribute to Vietnam's rapid and sustainable development.
He expressed his hope that CMC would grow into a major multinational corporation integrated into global value chains while prioritising social welfare and equitable access to technology, especially for remote and vulnerable communities.
The Government will always accompany companies, including CMC, and request ministries, agencies, and Hanoi authorities to further support them by promptly removing any obstacles to their growth, he concluded. - Vietnam News/ANN

BIOENERGY-BASED Elridge Energy Holdings Bhd has begun its 1Q FY2025 ended March 31, 2025 with a net profit of RM13.58 mil on the back of RM109.67 mil in revenue that were mainly contributed by customers based in Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia. As the group was only listed on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia in August 2024, no year-on-year (yoy) comparative figures from the previous financial year is available. Palm kernel shells (PKS) remain the cornerstone of the group's operations by contributing RM95.81 mil or 87.36% of total revenue while the remaining RM13.87 mil was derived from the trading and manufacturing of wood pellets. 'Our 1Q FY2025 performance reflects a strong and growing demand for sustainable biomass fuel products in international markets,' commented Elridge Energy's executive director and CEO Oliver Yeo. 'We are pleased to maintain our momentum post-listing and deliver healthy earnings growth in line with our strategic direction.' According to Coherent Market Insights, the PKS industry in Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8.9% from US$308.6 mil (RM1.4 bil) in 2024 to US$366.1 mil (RM1.7 bil) by 2026. The wood pellet market in the region is also forecast to expand at a CAGR of 8.6% to reach USD$12.5 bil (RM57.1 bil) in 2026 from US$10.6 bil (RM48.4 bil) in 2024. 'To support this growing market, we're executing our expansion plan with the development of new manufacturing sites in Pasir Gudang (Johor), Kuantan (Pahang) and Lahad Datu (Sabah),' revealed Yeo. 'These facilities will each house two PKS production lines with a combined annual output of 240,000 metric tonnes per site. The capacity expansion will enhance our ability to secure long-term export contracts and reinforce our position in the regional biomass supply chain.' To-date, a total of RM68.14 mil from the group's initial public offering (IPO) proceeds has been allocated to these projects. The investments form part of Elridge Energy's long-term strategy to capitalise on rising global demand for biomass fuels and to contribute to decarbonisation efforts in energy and industrial sectors. 'With a focused expansion strategy, a solid financial footing and rising demand from international markets, the group remains well-positioned to deliver sustained value to our shareholders and support the global shift towards renewable energy,' added Yeo. Japan rice price falls below US$27 per 5kg for the first time since March
TOKYO (Bernama-Kyodo): The average price of rice in Japan fell below 4,000 yen (US$27) per five kilograms (kg) for the first time in around three and a half months to 3,920 yen, the government said on Monday, with increased distribution of stockpiles likely helping to drive down prices. According to Kyodo News Agency, during the seven days through June 15, the average price of rice sold at supermarkets across the nation fell by 256 yen per five kg from the previous week, dropping to the 3,000 yen range for the first time since the week ended March 2, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Farm Minister Shinjiro Koizumi told reporters that the drop was due in part to the release of additional rice reserves, stating that "a clear message from the government is proving effective." The market share of blended rice, including reserve rice, rose six percentage points to 50 per cent. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has vowed to bring the average retail price of five kg of rice down to the 3,000 yen range by the end of June. Last year, a household consumed 60.20 kg of rice, according to government consumer spending data. Even after the latest fall, the average price of rice remains nearly double that of a year earlier. Japan's core consumer prices in May rose 3.7 per cent from a year earlier, marking the biggest increase in more than two years, with rice prices setting a fresh record for the eighth consecutive month with a 101.7 per cent jump due to a supply shortage. On Monday, meanwhile, measures were put into place prohibiting the reselling of rice bought at retail stores to ensure that consumers have access to rice at stable prices.
