Japan rice price falls below US$27 per 5kg for the first time since March

TOKYO (Bernama-Kyodo): The average price of rice in Japan fell below 4,000 yen (US$27) per five kilograms (kg) for the first time in around three and a half months to 3,920 yen, the government said on Monday, with increased distribution of stockpiles likely helping to drive down prices.
According to Kyodo News Agency, during the seven days through June 15, the average price of rice sold at supermarkets across the nation fell by 256 yen per five kg from the previous week, dropping to the 3,000 yen range for the first time since the week ended March 2, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Farm Minister Shinjiro Koizumi told reporters that the drop was due in part to the release of additional rice reserves, stating that "a clear message from the government is proving effective."
The market share of blended rice, including reserve rice, rose six percentage points to 50 per cent.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has vowed to bring the average retail price of five kg of rice down to the 3,000 yen range by the end of June.
Last year, a household consumed 60.20 kg of rice, according to government consumer spending data. Even after the latest fall, the average price of rice remains nearly double that of a year earlier.
Japan's core consumer prices in May rose 3.7 per cent from a year earlier, marking the biggest increase in more than two years, with rice prices setting a fresh record for the eighth consecutive month with a 101.7 per cent jump due to a supply shortage.
On Monday, meanwhile, measures were put into place prohibiting the reselling of rice bought at retail stores to ensure that consumers have access to rice at stable prices.
Under the ban, those who sell rice at a higher price than they paid face up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 1 million yen (US$6,767), or both. -- BERNAMA-KYODO

Rising demand for sustainable biomass products to drive Elridge Energy's growth prospect in FY2025

BIOENERGY-BASED Elridge Energy Holdings Bhd has begun its 1Q FY2025 ended March 31, 2025 with a net profit of RM13.58 mil on the back of RM109.67 mil in revenue that were mainly contributed by customers based in Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia. As the group was only listed on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia in August 2024, no year-on-year (yoy) comparative figures from the previous financial year is available. Palm kernel shells (PKS) remain the cornerstone of the group's operations by contributing RM95.81 mil or 87.36% of total revenue while the remaining RM13.87 mil was derived from the trading and manufacturing of wood pellets. 'Our 1Q FY2025 performance reflects a strong and growing demand for sustainable biomass fuel products in international markets,' commented Elridge Energy's executive director and CEO Oliver Yeo. 'We are pleased to maintain our momentum post-listing and deliver healthy earnings growth in line with our strategic direction.' According to Coherent Market Insights, the PKS industry in Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8.9% from US$308.6 mil (RM1.4 bil) in 2024 to US$366.1 mil (RM1.7 bil) by 2026. The wood pellet market in the region is also forecast to expand at a CAGR of 8.6% to reach USD$12.5 bil (RM57.1 bil) in 2026 from US$10.6 bil (RM48.4 bil) in 2024. 'To support this growing market, we're executing our expansion plan with the development of new manufacturing sites in Pasir Gudang (Johor), Kuantan (Pahang) and Lahad Datu (Sabah),' revealed Yeo. 'These facilities will each house two PKS production lines with a combined annual output of 240,000 metric tonnes per site. The capacity expansion will enhance our ability to secure long-term export contracts and reinforce our position in the regional biomass supply chain.' To-date, a total of RM68.14 mil from the group's initial public offering (IPO) proceeds has been allocated to these projects. The investments form part of Elridge Energy's long-term strategy to capitalise on rising global demand for biomass fuels and to contribute to decarbonisation efforts in energy and industrial sectors. 'With a focused expansion strategy, a solid financial footing and rising demand from international markets, the group remains well-positioned to deliver sustained value to our shareholders and support the global shift towards renewable energy,' added Yeo. At 4.56pm, Elridge Energy was unchanged at 59.5 sen with 2.38 million shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM1.19 bil. – May 27, 2025

Rwanda exhibition focuses on innovation for sustainable agri-food systems

KIGALI, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan farmers are showcasing a wide range of innovations transforming the country's agriculture sector at the ongoing 18th National Agriculture Show in Kigali, the capital. Running from June 18 to 27, the exhibition attracted about 500 exhibitors, according to Rwanda's Ministry of Agriculture. From smart irrigation systems and high-yield crop varieties to modern machinery, smart farming tools and climate-smart solutions, visitors can see real farming solutions in action which have been tested, proven, and ready to adopt. Also on display are tractors, precision seeders, harvesters, and other impressive machines that showcase how mechanization is transforming agriculture in Rwanda. Fredy Karegeya, head of seed production at a local seed company, said that the adoption of smart systems and innovation has enabled their seed production to thrive and make a real impact on food systems in the country. "We work on three crops including maize, beans and soybeans, the major one being maize. In maize seed production, we have almost four varieties and others in the pipeline coming soon after the performance trial. One of the maize varieties we developed is suitable for dry lands, a variety that produces high yields ranging from nine metric tons to 12 metric tons per hectare," Karegeya told Xinhua in a recent interview. "This maize variety is new and has the capacity to withstand the changing climate with a shorter maturity period of three months. This variety plays a key role in ensuring sustainable food systems, whereby farmers get high quality production and get seeds in time," he added. Earlier, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources Mark Cyubahiro Bagabe said the annual event offers a platform for showcasing technologies, innovative practices, and partnerships that address the challenges in agriculture from climate change to post-harvest losses.

IPPTAR Plays Role In Shaping Gen Z As Ethical Communicators

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) – The Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR) plays a key role in shaping the new generation—referred to as Gen Z—to become ethical communicators, said its Director, Roslan Ariffin. He said that in pursuit of this goal, emphasis and guidance on communication ethics must be nurtured from an early stage in tandem with the advancement of digital technology, so that the voices of the new generation become a positive force in communication. 'Today's generation is incredibly fast—everything is fast, speech is fast, WhatsApp is fast—and their voices and ways of connecting transcend boundaries… so we need to give them proper guidance and emphasis, with the hope that they communicate ethically. 'This also aligns with the theme of IPPTAR's Open Day celebration tomorrow, which is 'Suara Generasi, Kuasa Komunikasi (Voice of the Generation, Power of Communication),' he said when appearing as a guest on BERNAMA TV's Ruang Bicara programme tonight. Commenting further, Roslan said that IPPTAR Open Day, now in its second year, serves as a platform to attract young people to come and learn more about the institute. 'The content we have prepared is largely aimed at drawing in this group, most of whom today aspire to be influencers—but to become influencers, they must first be good communicators. 'By getting to know IPPTAR, they may one day come to regard it with affection and pride as an institution that educates and trains them in the world of communication,' he said. He added that in facing the latest technologies, including the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI), IPPTAR continues to progress and evolve to become a leading training institution in the field of communication to meet current needs. In conjunction with IPPTAR Open Day 2025 tomorrow, the public will have the opportunity to explore and understand AI technology and its significance to the media and broadcasting industry, in addition to participating in various engaging activities.
