Beautiful UK beach 'rivals Spanish coastline' with white sands and clear waters

Daily Mirror09-06-2025

A breathtaking UK beach has been named a firm contender for Spain's sandy shores thanks to its beautiful setting and crystal-clear waters
The UK may not always be able to rival the sun-soaked weather you'll find in Spain, but our coastline is definitely giving the holiday hotspot a run for its money.
In fact, there's one breathtaking UK beach that's been hailed as a competitor to Spanish shores, thanks to its pristine white sands, turquoise waters and picture-perfect surroundings that wouldn't be out of place on a postcard. Throw in the plethora of nearby hotels, restaurants and bars, and it's not difficult to see why Porthcurno Beach in Cornwall is such a hit with Brits planning a staycation.
The National Trust site gets its white sands from the soft shells that form its shores, while the crystal-clear waters and freshwater stream make it a must-visit on those hot summer days. Wildlife fans may also want to keep their eyes peeled for the variety of birds that call the region home, not to mention you can even spot basking sharks and dolphins between May and October.
The travel experts at Holidaycottages.co.uk have named it as one of their go-to 'dupes' for Spain, explaining: "If you're looking for a beach in the UK that offers white sand, dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters and lush greenery similar to the Costa Brava in north-east Spain, then head to Porthcurno Beach in Cornwall.
"Reminiscent of a tropical paradise, the beach is framed by towering cliffs, providing a peaceful retreat from the wind, and a scenic backdrop that enhances its secluded and calm atmosphere. Lastly, the beach's clear waters make it ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and exploring marine life."
Over on Tripadvisor, visitors have plenty of positive reviews of the shoreline, although a few have warned that the nearby car park can fill up quickly so you may want to have a few alternatives in your back pocket if you are planning to visit. "What a lovely beach," wrote one happy holidaymaker. "Fairly small bay with clean sand. It has quite a steep drop off so isn't great for children playing in the surf. It has toilets, a cafe and car park very close."
Another added: "A must do on your trip to Cornwall. Parking is difficult so plan ahead. The sea positively sparkles in the sunlight. It's one of the most picturesque spots on the island."
For one holidaymaker, even some bad luck with the weather couldn't affect the beauty of the area. They wrote: "Just stunning. One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. First time at Porthcurno and will definitely be returning. Just hope it doesn't rain this time."
Meanwhile, fans of the hit TV show Poldark may also recognise the spectacular coastline, as it served as a filming location. According to the National Trust, it doubled up as Nampara Cove in the first season, as well as the second series where it provided the backdrop for a dream sequence in which Demelza and Ross enjoy a stroll.
There's plenty to see and do in the area too. One major highlight has to be the iconic Minack Theatre, a unique outdoor theatre that's built into the cliffs and overlooks sea, making for some seriously Instagram-worthy views. Meanwhile hikers may want to don their sturdy boots and take on one of the countless trails along the cliffs; the South West Coastal Path passes through the region if you're looking to tick it off the bucket list!

'I'm riding 1,000 miles to get to Glastonbury - people think I'm crazy'

One festivalgoer has taken his journey to Glastonbury to all new lengths as he's been cycling 100km a day for almost a month in a bid to get to Worthy Farm from Madrid, Spain The countdown to Glastonbury is fast approaching, with mere days to go before hundreds of thousands of festivalgoers pitch up their tents for five days of spectacular performances. While many will be travelling by car, train or coach, one man is so dedicated to the UK's biggest festival that he's riding a whopping 100km a day on his bike to get there! Ollie White, 25, started his lengthy journey at the end of May from Madrid, Spain, where he lives and works as a content creator for La Liga, the Spanish football league. Over the course of almost a month, he has ventured across majestic mountains, the biggest sand dune in Europe, serene coastlines and desert-like landscapes with just a backpack, a tent and his bicycle. ‌ In total, Ollie will travel over 1,600km, or 994 miles, to Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset, racking up 62 miles a day. ‌ With just a few days to go until the gates open at Glastonbury on Wednesday, 25 June, at 8 am, Ollie has almost completed his trek and has been documenting his journey on TikTok and Instagram every day. In his most recent update on Sunday, 22 June, Ollie confirmed that he reached Plymouth before heading to Totnes, Devon, where he'd stay the night. He is hoping to reach Glastonbury by Tuesday, 24 June. When asked by the BBC why he opted to ride from Madrid to Worthy Farm, he simply said: "I have a ticket for Glastonbury, so why not cycle?" Speaking further about his experience, he also shared with the news outlet: "A lot of people think I'm crazy for doing this, but for me it doesn't seem too crazy. "It's just a challenge I've set myself and, at the end of the day, once you've done all the preparation, you just have to get on the bike each day and do the kilometres." ‌ He described his adventure as "absolutely incredible" and that "everything has been really positive". He's spent time camping alone in secluded, yet beautiful spots across Europe and the UK, while taking in nature and the incredible scenery during each leg of his journey. When he finally reaches his end location, Ollie has a list of performances lined up to watch during the weekend at Glastonbury, including Neil Young, Loyle Carner, Kneecap, Caribou, Scissor Sisters and Kaiser Chiefs. He adds that Neil Young has been a particularly good soundtrack while riding through endless countries.

A group of lifeguards and security attempt to intervene, but their efforts amount to nothing as the chair-hurling man seemingly ignores them. The two hurt holidaymakers then stay in the pool surrounded by foes, while their opposition continue to shout at and taunt them. One of the men is even seen mocking the victims as he dances by the side of the pool. A seemingly ironic sign, which reads "Good Vibes Only", can be seen by the side of the pool. The account that posted the viral video captioned the brawl: "The chaos was temporary. The memories? Permanent." Other viewers seemed to find the mayhem absolutely hilarious, and heavy speculation suggested the men were all British. One user commented: "Can smell the Stella, Joop and British passports from here." Another said: "Typical British behaviour." But some viewers were outraged by the fight. One account said: "Doesn't look like good fun happening there. Looks too intimidating and aggressive. No thanks." While another said: "Embarrassingly British." It is unclear if the men were British nationals, and the hotel have not commented on the brawl which left one woman lying on the floor. In 2022, two people ended up in the sea when a mass brawl erupted in Ibiza after Brits were reportedly banned from a party boat. The fight saw brawlers punching each other and rubbish bins being used as weapons in the popular resort of San Antonio. The chair-throwing fight also comes after an EasyJet passenger on board a flight to Ibiza was left petrified after a group of rowdy "drunk" Brits turned her journey into a "nightclub". Furious Spaniard Erika Barrachina claimed she suffered a "panic attack" after having to cope with "scum" passengers. The Ibiza resident blasted that these type of tourists should never have been allowed to board the plane in the first place. Shocking footage showed a packed plane with passengers appearing to bang on luggage compartments and yell: "Come on Ibiza!"

To help holiday makers enjoy their trip without facing any unwanted charges, we have put together a list of the 4 regulations you should be aware of". ‌ He went on to say: "Spain is an incredibly popular tourist destination for British holidaymakers. But it's more important than ever to be mindful and respectful when holidaying. By travelling with awareness of the local culture and regulations, you can contribute to a positive travel experience for yourself and others.
