Canadian dad goes shopping in Lidl supermarket and prices leave him gobsmacked
A Canadian man was gobsmacked after visiting a Lidl supermarket in the UK and seeing the cost of food products – as he never expected the prices to be like this While many of us Brits often complain about how much food products burn a hole in our bank accounts every week, a Canadian man insists the prices are cheap in UK supermarkets. A young Canadian woman, named Tara, is currently studying at university in Edinburgh. And recently, her dad came to visit. The pair took a trip to Lidl together – and the father could not believe what he saw. Amused by his reaction, Tara decided to film him walking up and down the aisles. The Canadian was flabbergasted at how affordable the products were – including a litre bottle of cola for 49p. He exclaimed: "What the f*** is that? That is f***ing crazy." He went on to do a big food shop and could not wait to show his partner. After picking up a cheap packet of eggs, he added: "You could probably buy your own rooster or hen for the price of a f***ing dozen eggs where I am from. It's true." The dad warmed people's hearts – especially when he proudly took a snap of all of the food products laid out on the counter, still in awe of the prices. In the comments section, he added: "There was a time when ours was decent but now its insane [in Canada]." Many people could relate to this struggle – as according to Money Corp, the average price of a litre of milk in the UK is £1, while in Canada it is £1.66. Plus, the average price of chicken breasts in the UK are priced at £5.70. In comparison, you would be paying around £8.93 in Canada. The price of groceries is 26.9% lower in the UK compared to Canada. One of the few exceptions in this aspect of the cost of living in Canada vs UK are restaurant prices, which are 5% higher in the UK than in Canada. Shocked by the difference, one individual commented on Tara's video: "Imagine thinking UK is cheap, what's going on?" Another said: "Imagine his reaction to the prices before the pandemic." And a third added: "Take him to the pound shop." Fellow Canadians also chimed in. One wrote: "As a Canadian in UK I can confirm his excitement. The cost of living and quality of life back home is not comparable to UK. I know our wages are much smaller but we live better off what we earn." Meanwhile, another said: "The prices in the UK are so much cheaper . We get ripped off in Canada and prices don't come down. It's an absolute joke."

UK holidaymakers can now use eGates at 14 major destinations
The opening of a raft of eGates at airports across Europe means less queues for British tourists this holiday season Holidaymakers heading to popular destinations can breathe a sigh of relief with the news that a host of eGates have now officially opened in time for the summer season. It should mean less queueing for Brits abroad, who, until now, have had to line up for manned immigration booths and have their documents stamped. Portugal announced the opening of their eGates at Faro Airport at the start of the month after the Prime Minister Keir Starmer struck a deal with EU leaders. And now France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and eleven other EU countries have officially reopened fast-track eGates for British tourists. According to Travel and Tour World, passengers will now be able to breeze through 14 airports using the electronic system which will scan UK passports and replace the need for stamping them. Exiting border control through these automated gates was something Brits could do before Brexit. After leaving, that access was restricted. British travellers were then reclassified as "visa-exempt third-country nationals" and initially lost their ability to use e-gates at many European airports. Until now, UK holidaymakers have only been able to use eGates at limited airports in Spain and Portugal. It's led to reports of 'nightmare' queues before peak summer season - July and August - has even arrived. At Faro Airport, prior to the opening of the eGates, we reported on passengers waiting for three hours at the hub to have their passports stamped. This week Sofia Airport in Bulgaria also opened for British fliers. And Tallinn Airport in Estonia has also relaxed the ban and will now allow Brits to use the gates. The amendment to the eGate regulations now mean 49 destinations will allow Brits through their security system, the Sun said, with popular countries such as Paris, Rome, Lisbon and Tenerife on the list. There had been fears that gates would not reopen for Brits before this summer with initial timescales set at October 2025 with the roll out taking place over six months from then. Over the years, experts have come out with a whole host of - often ineffective - methods to combat these garden pests. From splashing beer and sprinkling eggshells on crops to surrounding veg patches with copper tape. But one savvy expert believes they have found a cheap, store cupboard hack that could rid gardens of these pests once and for all. And at just 22p a bulb, this could be the cheapest hack yet. Garlic wash involves boiling two whole bulbs of garlic in two litres of water until they soften, then pulping them to make a juice. After removing the garlic skins, the concentrated liquid should be diluted with water and put into a spray can which can be used over plants. Advertisement The liquid should then be sprayed on plants across the summer right into October. A gardening expert wrote: "We use garlic wash as a slug deterrent on the nursery. 6 ways to get rid of slugs and snails "Please find below the recipe that we use and find very effective. The quantities aren't exact and you can always alter them as you wish." If the smell of garlic is too pungent Homes & Garden writer, Thomas Rutter, suggests using cucumber instead. Advertisement Stopping slugs and snails using the cucumber hack is surprisingly simple. While it may not eradicate these pests, it can help gardeners control their numbers. Rutter said: "First, raid your fridge drawer and retrieve a cucumber, before slicing it thinly. "Don't worry about the quality of the cucumber here, in fact, it is best to use those that are past their best." Advertisement Rutter then advises to place the slices near your more vulnerable plants in the evening. Slugs and snails will be lured to the scent and moisture of the cucumber. Then, after a few hours or the following morning, you can collect the pests and dispose of them. It's not too dissimilar from companion planting or trap plants for pest control. Londoners face record-breaking temperatures for the second day running after the mercury hit 32C in Heathrow, west London, yesterday. Temperatures in York are expected to reach as high as 29C, with Gloucester also set to register the same heat today. Some areas on the west and east coast will be slightly cooler at 24C, but people will still be able to soak up the rays. Spectators at sporting events such as Royal Ascot and the Queens Club tennis tournament will be able to top up their tans in the sun. By this afternoon, a number of areas in Britain are expected to have passed the heatwave criteria, according to the Met Office. An official heatwave is recorded when areas reach a certain temperature for three consecutive days. Thresholds can vary from 25C to 28C in different parts of the UK. Met Office weather forecaster Dan Stroud said: "We're expecting the hot and dry conditions to continue, it does turn a little bit hazier in the west during the course of Friday. "We're still expecting temperatures to reach the low 30s, 31C, 32C fairly widely, maybe seeing 33C." The warm weather will spread to the south and east of the country on Saturday, with 32C predicted in London and 31C in Cambridge. Mr Stroud confirmed that Sunday will slightly cooler, but another warm day across the country - with temperatures likely to hit the late to mid 20s. Over the last few days, Brits have flocked to the seaside and rivers so they can take a quick dip to cool off. Others have been spotted sunbathing in parks instead and making the most of their lunch breaks. UK's 5-day forecast Today: Dry with sunny spells once again, although somewhat cloudier than yesterday. Breezy along southern and eastern coasts. Feeling very warm, and locally hot. Sunday to Tuesday: A fresher and breezier spell of weather from Sunday and into next week. Whilst showers are possible at times, prolonged dry periods are likely with warm sunny spells at times. It comes as an amber heat health alert has been issued for the whole of England from 12pm on Thursday until 9am on Monday. Officials have warned that soaring June temperatures could mean a "likely rise in deaths in those 65 and over". The alert - a step up from the yellow heat health alert issued earlier this week - warned that "significant impacts are likely" across health and social care services because of high temperatures. One Royal Ascot spectator was taken to hospital yesterday, with 42 others given medical attention on site for heat-related illness during the prestigious horse racing event. The UK's June temperature record stands at 35.6C, which was set in Southampton in 1976. Current forecasts suggest the record is unlikely to be broken this time - but it will come close. A warning against wildfires has also been issued by the Fire Brigade, as firefighters have responded to more than 500 across England and Wales this year so far.
