SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), in collaboration with the Sandakan Parliamentary Service Centre, held a memorial ceremony, on Friday to commemorate the 'Double Six' tragedy at Taman Chong Tain Vun, Jalan Trig Hill. The event drew leaders and community representatives, including Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee, MPS President Walter Kenson, several State Assemblymen, agency officials, NGOs and family members of the late Datuk Chong Tain Vun.

Walter said the memorial was a joint initiative between MPS and Vivian Wong to remember one of Sabah's darkest days and in particular, to recognise the contributions of a prominent figure from this district who died in the crash. 'He was a respected lawyer and public servant. This ceremony is a step toward ensuring the tragedy and the people we lost, are never forgotten,' he said. He also expressed gratitude to all who attended, regardless of political affiliation, and noted the strong support from local organisations despite the short notice.

Vivian hoped the council would continue the initiative, saying it was important for younger generations to learn about the tragedy and its significance in the state's history. Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon said the memorial served not just to recall a national loss, but to honour the sacrifices of leaders who dedicated themselves to Sabah's development. Jetama Chairman Liau Fui Fui agreed, adding that the legacy and leadership of those who perished must continue to be honoured. The tragedy occurred on June 6, 1976, when a plane carrying several Sabah leaders crashed in Kg Sembulan after departing from Labuan to Kota Kinabalu. Among the victims were Chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens, Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Chong Thien Vun and Assistant Minister Darius Binion. Also killed were pilot Captain Gandhi Nathan, Johari Stephens (eldest son of Tun Fuad), Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Wahid Peter Andau, Economic Planning Unit Director Dr Syed Hussein Wafa and Isak Atan, private secretary to Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Only two Apas Rumah Mesra not ready yet

Published on: Sunday, June 22, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 22, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Nizam handing over the house keys to the recipients. TAWAU: Only two out of 60 Rumah Mesra SMJ allocated for the Apas state constituency between 2022 and 2024 have yet to be completed, due to technical issues such as land ownership and site conditions. However, Assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan expressed confidence these two homes would be completed soon, once the related issues are resolved. He said the delay was caused by technical challenges, including land ownership and uneven terrain, which posed difficulties as the construction of SMJ homes requires level land or modifications to the site. Nizam was speaking to the media after handing over house keys to recipients in Kg Kuala Balung, Kg Inderasabah, Kg Wakuba and Kg Sungai Gading. He said over the past two years, a total of 58 SMJ homes in Apas had been fully completed, with most recipients already receiving their keys, which he personally handed over. He extended his gratitude to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor for the initiative, saying the Rumah Mesra SMJ programme had greatly benefited those in need, particularly the B40 group. Advertisement 'These recipients own land but are unable to build homes due to various life constraints. On behalf of the people of Apas, I thank the Chief Minister for his concern and commitment to launching this initiative,' he said. Among the recipients was single mother of three, Norliza Suliman, who expressed her gratitude upon receiving her house key during Nizam's ground visit. She said although she had land, she had not been able to build a home due to financial difficulties, compounded by the rising cost of building materials. 'I hope this Rumah Mesra SMJ initiative will continue to be implemented by the Government to help more people in need and give them the chance to live more comfortably in a home of their own,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
