SANDAKAN: The District Schools Sports Council (MSSD) Athletics Championship is an important platform for grassroots sports development, said Sandakan MP Vivian Wong. According to her, such championships provide opportunities for young talents to shine and contribute to the nation's future athletic growth. Advertisement Speaking when officiating at the 65th Sandakan MSSD Athletics Championship 2025 last Tuesday, Vivian expressed her pride in seeing nearly 600 student athletes from 28 contingents taking part in the three-day meet which runs until June 19. 'I believe the active participation of students in this championship is a positive sign for the advancement of co-curricular activities and local sports development. 'Their achievements also bring pride to the schools, zones, and families they represent,' she said. Vivian also conveyed her appreciation to the Sandakan District Education Office, the organising committee, and Sandakan District Headmasters Association for their strong commitment and thorough preparations in organising the championship. Advertisement She stressed that such events require full cooperation from all parties and are a significant investment in identifying and nurturing young talents who have the potential to compete at international levels. Vivian highlighted the Federal Government's commitment to strengthening national sports development through substantial budget allocations aimed at improving facilities, training programmes, and youth talent development. 'This clearly reflects the government's commitment to ensuring the continuity of the nation's sporting excellence,' she said. She also acknowledged the key role of teachers and coaches, describing them as the backbone of young athletes' success. 'Teachers and coaches are not just educators, but also mentors who shape the future of our national athletes. Their dedication and guidance are crucial in maximising the potential of these young talents,' she said. Vivian urged all athletes to stay passionate, uphold sportsmanship and strengthen camaraderie throughout the championship. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Stop destructive political tactics: DAP tells Elopura Assemblyman
Published on: Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 18, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Vivian (left) accused Calvin (right) of repeatedly manipulating the issue with inflammatory and misleading statements driven by political theatrics rather than constructive intent. SANDAKAN: Sabah DAP Secretary cum Sandakan MP Vivian Wong called on Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong to stop using destructive political tactics and return to the spirit of healthy democracy, following his repeated attacks on the Esteel green steel plant project. 'If you truly want to champion the people, first understand the real facts about this project, then channel your views through appropriate and constructive means,' Vivian said, criticising what she described as Calvin's 'theatrical' police reports and unfounded allegations aimed at creating political propaganda. Advertisement She said the Esteel steel plant project is one of Sabah's most strategic foreign industrial investments in recent years, having received comprehensive approval from the Federal Government and all relevant agencies. The project's legitimacy was further demonstrated when the Prime Minister himself conducted the ground-breaking ceremony. 'This project will stimulate transformation in Sabah's industrial sector, create thousands of job opportunities and help local companies join the global supply chain. It is an invaluable economic leap opportunity for the State,' she said. She accused Calvin of repeatedly manipulating the issue with inflammatory and misleading statements driven by political theatrics rather than constructive intent. 'If he genuinely wants to scrutinise and critique, he should use official channels, including raising questions in the State Legislative Assembly to the State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe rather than creating negative public perception without solid facts,' she said. Vivian noted this pattern of behaviour is not new, pointing to Calvin's previous irresponsible statement urging foreign investors not to invest in Sandakan. 'Now he is not only backstabbing Sandakan but also damaging Sabah's image and future in the eyes of outside investors. If such actions continue, investors will think twice before choosing Sabah as an investment destination,' she said. She said the people of Sabah and Sandakan should not become victims of irresponsible political games, calling for rational, responsible and globally-minded representatives instead of those who 'enjoy stirring political drama for cheap publicity. 'Do not let cheap publicity sacrifice development opportunities that Sabah desperately needs. Sabah should not lose to endless internal squabbles like this and Sandakan can no longer afford to be betrayed by its own representative,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Communications Ministry Ready To Help Pulau Berhala Women Become e-Entrepreneurs
SANDAKAN, June 17 (Bernama) -- The Communications Ministry is ready to assist a group of women in Pulau Berhala here to become e-entrepreneurs, leveraging their handmade sewing products and the island's strong internet connectivity. Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching said the women had acquired sewing skills through classes held at the Kampung Pulau Berhala Women's Community Centre, an initiative by Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee. 'It is time to create opportunities for these women to venture into e-commerce. With the island's reliable 4G coverage, they can market their products not only locally but also abroad if there is demand. 'If this initiative takes off, I can invite platforms like Shopee, Lazada or TikTok Shop to hold training sessions here to help the women learn how to sell their products online,' she told reporters after visiting the community centre with Vivian today. Teo said the handcrafted products made by the Bajau women, including pillows, hair ribbons and traditional Bajau attire, had strong commercial potential. Meanwhile, Vivian said the two-year effort to establish the community centre had paid off, with local women showing keen interest in the sewing activities offered there. 'We want Pulau Berhala women to become financially independent. Besides sewing classes, we plan to introduce lessons in cooking, traditional pastry making and batik painting. We have already identified instructors willing to teach,' she said. Housewife Rina Rameo Abdullah, 51, said the centre had greatly benefited her by helping her develop sewing skills and earn income while spending her time productively. 'I sew traditional Bajau attire known as 'Sablai'. In the early morning, I sell kuih, and after that, I come to the centre to sew clothes that are worn during festive occasions,' she said.

Elon Musk's daughter makes drag debut at anti-ICE fundraiser
Elon Musk's transgender daughter made her debut drag performance in Los Angeles last week at an immigration fundraiser. Vivian Jenna Wilson, 21, hit the stage at The Bellwether on Friday night in a black catsuit and metal corset using the name Vivllanious. The crowd went wild for Musk's eldest daughter as she strutted on the stage, proudly waving a transgender pride flag over her head. The performance was part of the benefit event 'SAVE HER! – an Environmental Drag Show', organised by acclaimed drag artist Pattie Gonia. Vivan Wilson waves a flag while performing as Vivllanious Credit: Supplied At one point during the performance, the social media personality kicked her high-heeled boot behind her head in a striking show of flexibility. Vivian later took to Instagram to thank the event organisers, saying her participation in the performance was 'a life-changing experience'. Unsurprisingly, Elon Musk was missing from the show's audience. Musk's strained relationship with his daughter has been no secret, with the businessman taking to X last year to claim that Vivian's transition was due to her being 'tricked' by the 'woke mind virus'. Vivian told Teen Vogue earlier this year that she thinks Musk is a 'pathetic man-child' who she 'didn't give a f*** about'. Other drag artists who performed at the weekend's event included Vera!, Nina Coco, Jacob Ostler, and Trudy Tective. All of the money raised at the event was donated to legal defences for immigrants impacted by ICE raids.
