Hyatt Hotels completed its $2.6 billion acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts, an owner, operator and developer of all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, the hotel company announced Wednesday.
Hyatt first announced it was in exclusive talks to merge with Playa in December. In February, Hyatt officially entered into an agreement with Playa to acquire all of its outstanding shares for $13.50 per share, or approximately $2.6 billion. Earlier this month, Hyatt obtained all required regulatory approvals on that cash offer.
With the deal, Hyatt grows its portfolio of all-inclusive resorts. Industrywide, hotel companies have leaned on brand acquisitions to quickly scale their portfolios and loyalty membership.
The deal strengthens Hyatt's 'leadership in the all-inclusive space through a combination of new locations, capabilities, and talent,' according to Hyatt CEO Mark Hoplamazian, adding that Playa's all-inclusive management platform 'complements Hyatt's global scale and brand strength, enabling us to deliver compelling experiences for guests and members while driving strong performance for owners.'
Through the acquisition, Hyatt assumes 15 all-inclusive resorts previously managed and owned by Playa, including Secrets La Romana and Dreams La Romana in the Dominican Republic; Dreams Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen and Sunscape Cancun in Mexico. Eight of the resorts are already in Hyatt's system under the Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara brand, which launched in collaboration with Playa in 2013, Hyatt detailed.
Hyatt previously expanded its all-inclusive portfolio with its 2021 acquisition of Apple Leisure Group. In 2024, Hyatt entered a strategic joint venture with Grupo Piñero for Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts.
Beyond growing physical scale, brand acquisitions and partnerships enable hotel players to expand loyalty capabilities and customer reach, hospitality pros previously told Hotel Dive.
'Hyatt's loyalty program, World of Hyatt, and all-inclusive distribution platform, which includes ALG Vacations and Unlimited Vacation Club, are complemented by Playa's commercial capabilities,' Javier Águila, president of Hyatt's Inclusive Collection, said in a statement. Águila was named to his role earlier this year.
Hyatt has used brand acquisition to grow its lifestyle portfolio as well. In August, the hotel company acquired Standard International. That deal followed other tie-ups with Dream Hotel Group, Mr & Mrs Smith and German brand Me and All Hotels.
Marriott International and Hilton have also recently expanded in the competitive lifestyle segment via their acquisitions of CitizenM and Graduate Hotels, respectively.

'We're not getting enough people through the door': Village pub closes

A village pub has closed less than a year after being taken under new management. Ben's at The Legion in Blackrod posted on social media that it had closed with "immediate effect" this week. The former Heroes of Blackrod, on Manchester Road, was taken over by husband and wife Ben and Nikki Haydock in October 2024. The post states: "It's with great regret that we have to announce that Bens at The Legion has closed permanently with immediate effect. (Image: Ben Haydock) "We would like to say a huge thank you to all our staff for their hard work and dedication and also express my gratitude to all of our customers for your support during our brief stay. "If you got a taste for our ale you're more than welcome to visit us at Ben's Tap & Bottle Shop where we also have a great selection of craft cans and even more on our website (Image: Ben's Brewery) "To be frank it doesn't feel great to be yet another of the growing numbers of pubs closing but we'll dust ourselves down and crack on. "Thank you for some good memories Blackrod and all the best for the future." The building was formerly the Blackrod Royal British Legion Club before closing its doors in August 2012. The family's microbrewery, Ben's Tap and Bottle Shop, remains open in Chorley town centre. The Bolton News attempted to contact the pub's management, but they had no further comment to make. In 2024, close to 300 pubs closed down across England and Wales — a rate of around six per week — according to the latest figures from the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA). The association, which represents more than 20,000 establishments, revealed that 289 pubs shut over the past year, leading to the loss of over 4,500 jobs.

Report: Audi Might Build a U.S. Factory in Response to Tariffs

Audi is discussing the construction of a new factory in the United States, according to a new report from German publication Der Spiegel via Automotive News. Audi is said to be looking at the southern U.S., and the German news site's sources said it could cost around $4.6 billion to build. There's no word on what would be built there, but the popular Q5 SUV, currently made in Mexico, seems like a likely choice. The tariffs on imported vehicles implemented by the Trump administration have shaken up the car industry and led several automakers to investigate investing more heavily in production stateside. Now Audi may be considering building a new factory in the United States, as reported by German news website Der Spiegel via Automotive News. The move is reportedly being discussed as a potential way to appease President Trump in regard to tariffs. The report states that Audi is looking at the southern United States for its new factory, and that company sources estimate a cost of around $4.6 billion. We've reached out to Audi for comment and will update this story when we receive a response. It's unclear what this factory could be destined to build, but the compact Q5 SUV (pictured at top) seems like a good candidate. The Q5, which just entered a new generation for the 2025 model year, is Audi's bestseller and is currently assembled in Mexico. Other possibilities include the Q3, currently built in Hungary, and the Q7, assembled in Slovakia. Audi 2026 Audi Q3. Marc Urbano | Car and Driver 2025 Audi Q7. More Brands Looking to U.S. Plants This isn't the first time there have been rumors about Audi and U.S. production. In May, a report from German newspaper Automobilwoche suggested that Audi could produce cars at three different locations in the U.S. by making use of parent company Volkswagen's existing facilities. Volkswagen currently builds the Atlas SUV and the ID.4 EV at its factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and is constructing another factory for the incoming Scout brand outside Columbia, South Carolina. Audi isn't the only automaker investing more into building cars in the U.S. Earlier this month, GM announced it was adding production of the Mexico-made Equinox to its Fairfax plant in Kansas in 2027. The Blazer, also made in Mexico, will also be added to the Spring Hill, Tennessee, facility in 2027. Meanwhile, Honda is shifting U.S.-market CR-V production away from Canada and towards its factories in Indiana and Ohio, and Nissan is reportedly thinking about moving Sentra assembly out of Mexico.
