The Langton Arms pub where wife died after falling down cellar handed £240k fine

The owners of a pub where a customer died after falling through an unlocked cellar door has been ordered to pay a fine and costs totalling more than £285,000. Julie Hyatt, 57, was having lunch with her husband, Paul, and friends at The Langton Arms at Church Langton, near Market Harborough, in Leicestershire, in May 2023. She hadn't been drinking and was following signs to the toilet, when she opened an unmarked and unlocked door, not knowing it was to the pub's cellar, and fell down a steep flight of stairs. Mrs Hyatt suffered serious injuries from which she died in hospital 12 days later. At Leicester Magistrates' Court, the RedCat Pub Company, based in London, admitted breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act by exposing persons not in its employment to a risk to their health and safety. At the hearing, held on the second anniversary of Mrs Hyatt's funeral, the company was fined £240,000 and ordered to pay costs of £43,633.06p along with a £2,000 surcharge. In determining the level of fine and costs, District Judge Nick Watson said he had taken into account that RedCat's parent company had a turnover of more than £120million. He said he wanted to "bring it home to shareholders and management that they must take health and safety seriously". He added "Any sentence that I impose could not equate to the loss of Mrs Hyatt to her family and friends." In statements read to the court, it was revealed Mrs Hyatt and her husband had been looking forward to retirement and moving to the Norfolk coast. Married since 1987, they shared many interests and a passion for sport with Mrs Hyatt being a Leicester City season ticket holder for more than 30 years. The court heard that Mrs Hyatt's death was foreseeable. The company had failed to properly train staff and had left customers confused by inadequate and inconsistent signs. In a statement read to the court, Richard Lewis, CEO of RedCat Pub Company, expressed his "sincere personal regret" as the death was "entirely avoidable". The company said it accepted full responsibility. "We are genuinely very sorry ... We have plainly failed the Hyatt family. We will do all we can to prevent anything of the like happening again," added Mr Lewis. The court heard the company had since put in place risk assessments and evaluated the way in which it conducts staff training in relation to health and safety. ITV News Central Correspondent Peter Bearne sat down with the Paul Hyatt last year, who is still waiting for answers more than 12 months after his wife's death. In the time that passed, Paul, from Countesthorpe, repeatedly contacted the council for updates on the case, but said he has got nowhere. Paul has learned Harborough District Council have brought in a solicitor from another council to help with the case. In 2024, the council asked Paul for Julie's death certificate, something that the family won't get until after the inquest. ITV News Central is also aware of two other similar cases elsewhere in the country which came to court in 12 months. Speaking to ITV News Central, following the incident, Paul said: "It was hell at the time. I was in some very, very dark places." He added: "I just wish somebody would go in and shake that department up and get this sorted. Enough is enough. All I want is justice...I lost my wife." In response, Harborough District Council say that they sympathise with Mr Hyatt's frustrations. They told ITV News Central this case is a complex and lengthy criminal investigation, and they're unable to comment on its progress. "Specialist legal resource, they added, was allocated without delay. They said they've liaised with Mr Hyatt and his solicitor as much as they can, but there's a limit to what they can disclose."The Redcat Pub Company, which runs the Langton Arms, said: "We have and will continue to fully co-operate with the investigations being carried out by the authorities with regards to this incident."

How Can Russell Wilson Unlock Promising NY Giants Player?

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The presence of Russell Wilson during spring practices has done wonders for New York Giants wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. While it's still way too early to bank on Hyatt being a big-time contributor for the Giants in 2025, the 23-year-old is certainly turning heads at OTAs and minicamp. Recently, Wilson revealed he's not exactly surprised at the fact that Hyatt looks like he's progressing in a big way. The veteran quarterback mentioned that he saw Hyatt perform at a high level at Tennessee and even on tape during his previous runs with the Giants. After two seasons in the NFL, Hyatt still has plenty to prove. So far, the former third-round pick has struggled to live up to being a First-Team All-SEC recipient and a Bilentinikoff Award winner in the NFL. During his rookie season, Hyatt caught 23 passes for 373 yards. Last season, he had eight catches for 62 yards. Heading into year three, Hyatt has yet to find the end zone. Russell Wilson #3 of the New York Giants during a New York Giants practice session at NY Giants Quest Diagnostics Training Center on June 12, 2025 in East Rutherford, New can Wilson help him hit his stride? The veteran quarterback recently issued his thoughts. "I think that the biggest thing is just consistency that I can bring to him every day too and just making sure that I'm always giving him the extra opportunities down the field, but also not just down the field, but in any play we've got and spending extra time on the field," Wilson told reporters this week, via Giants Wire. "He's got great work ethic, Jalin does, and I think he's got a great grit to him. I think that he wants to be great every day, and he's got all the special pieces to it all." Work ethic is half the battle in the NFL, and a little increase in opportunities can go a long way for a young player looking to find a steady role. Right now, the Giants are practicing without the top wideout, Malik Nabers. As Wilson's top target recovers from a toe injury, Hyatt has taken advantage of the increased workload, putting it all together with his new quarterback. So far, Wilson is impressed. "I think what makes a great receiver is his ability to catch the ball and contest the situations—he does a great job of that, and he's got a great opportunity, in my opinion, this year to really set the tone in a great way," Wilson finished. "I've got all the belief in Jalin and who he's going to be and what he's going to mean to us and make clutch plays for us when it really matters in great way. I'm excited for what he's going to do this year and the rest of his career." For more New York Giants and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Hyatt completes $2.6B acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts

This story was originally published on Hotel Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Hotel Dive newsletter. Hyatt Hotels completed its $2.6 billion acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts, an owner, operator and developer of all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, the hotel company announced Wednesday. Hyatt first announced it was in exclusive talks to merge with Playa in December. In February, Hyatt officially entered into an agreement with Playa to acquire all of its outstanding shares for $13.50 per share, or approximately $2.6 billion. Earlier this month, Hyatt obtained all required regulatory approvals on that cash offer. With the deal, Hyatt grows its portfolio of all-inclusive resorts. Industrywide, hotel companies have leaned on brand acquisitions to quickly scale their portfolios and loyalty membership. The deal strengthens Hyatt's 'leadership in the all-inclusive space through a combination of new locations, capabilities, and talent,' according to Hyatt CEO Mark Hoplamazian, adding that Playa's all-inclusive management platform 'complements Hyatt's global scale and brand strength, enabling us to deliver compelling experiences for guests and members while driving strong performance for owners.' Through the acquisition, Hyatt assumes 15 all-inclusive resorts previously managed and owned by Playa, including Secrets La Romana and Dreams La Romana in the Dominican Republic; Dreams Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen and Sunscape Cancun in Mexico. Eight of the resorts are already in Hyatt's system under the Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara brand, which launched in collaboration with Playa in 2013, Hyatt detailed. Hyatt previously expanded its all-inclusive portfolio with its 2021 acquisition of Apple Leisure Group. In 2024, Hyatt entered a strategic joint venture with Grupo Piñero for Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts. Beyond growing physical scale, brand acquisitions and partnerships enable hotel players to expand loyalty capabilities and customer reach, hospitality pros previously told Hotel Dive. 'Hyatt's loyalty program, World of Hyatt, and all-inclusive distribution platform, which includes ALG Vacations and Unlimited Vacation Club, are complemented by Playa's commercial capabilities,' Javier Águila, president of Hyatt's Inclusive Collection, said in a statement. Águila was named to his role earlier this year. Hyatt has used brand acquisition to grow its lifestyle portfolio as well. In August, the hotel company acquired Standard International. That deal followed other tie-ups with Dream Hotel Group, Mr & Mrs Smith and German brand Me and All Hotels. Marriott International and Hilton have also recently expanded in the competitive lifestyle segment via their acquisitions of CitizenM and Graduate Hotels, respectively.
