Hyatt completes $2.6B acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts

This story was originally published on Hotel Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Hotel Dive newsletter. Hyatt Hotels completed its $2.6 billion acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts, an owner, operator and developer of all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, the hotel company announced Wednesday. Hyatt first announced it was in exclusive talks to merge with Playa in December. In February, Hyatt officially entered into an agreement with Playa to acquire all of its outstanding shares for $13.50 per share, or approximately $2.6 billion. Earlier this month, Hyatt obtained all required regulatory approvals on that cash offer. With the deal, Hyatt grows its portfolio of all-inclusive resorts. Industrywide, hotel companies have leaned on brand acquisitions to quickly scale their portfolios and loyalty membership. The deal strengthens Hyatt's 'leadership in the all-inclusive space through a combination of new locations, capabilities, and talent,' according to Hyatt CEO Mark Hoplamazian, adding that Playa's all-inclusive management platform 'complements Hyatt's global scale and brand strength, enabling us to deliver compelling experiences for guests and members while driving strong performance for owners.' Through the acquisition, Hyatt assumes 15 all-inclusive resorts previously managed and owned by Playa, including Secrets La Romana and Dreams La Romana in the Dominican Republic; Dreams Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen and Sunscape Cancun in Mexico. Eight of the resorts are already in Hyatt's system under the Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara brand, which launched in collaboration with Playa in 2013, Hyatt detailed. Hyatt previously expanded its all-inclusive portfolio with its 2021 acquisition of Apple Leisure Group. In 2024, Hyatt entered a strategic joint venture with Grupo Piñero for Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts. Beyond growing physical scale, brand acquisitions and partnerships enable hotel players to expand loyalty capabilities and customer reach, hospitality pros previously told Hotel Dive. 'Hyatt's loyalty program, World of Hyatt, and all-inclusive distribution platform, which includes ALG Vacations and Unlimited Vacation Club, are complemented by Playa's commercial capabilities,' Javier Águila, president of Hyatt's Inclusive Collection, said in a statement. Águila was named to his role earlier this year. Hyatt has used brand acquisition to grow its lifestyle portfolio as well. In August, the hotel company acquired Standard International. That deal followed other tie-ups with Dream Hotel Group, Mr & Mrs Smith and German brand Me and All Hotels. Marriott International and Hilton have also recently expanded in the competitive lifestyle segment via their acquisitions of CitizenM and Graduate Hotels, respectively. Hyatt Strengthens Leadership in All-Inclusive Segment with Acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts N.V.

Acquisition Expands Hyatt's Inclusive Collection with Iconic Beachfront Resorts, Meeting Guest Demand for All-Inclusive Stays and Reinforcing Brand Strength CHICAGO, June 17, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) today announced the completed acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts N.V. (NASDAQ: PLYA), a leading owner, operator, and developer of all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. This transaction includes the acquisition of 15 all-inclusive resorts previously managed and owned by Playa. Of these, eight were already represented within Hyatt's system as Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara properties. As part of the transaction, Hyatt expands its all-inclusive portfolio with the addition of several resorts located in premier beach destinations, including Secrets La Romana and Dreams La Romana in the Dominican Republic; Dreams Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen and Sunscape Cancun in Mexico. "As we welcome Playa into the Hyatt family, we are strengthening our leadership in the all-inclusive space through a combination of new locations, capabilities, and talent," said Mark Hoplamazian, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hyatt. "Playa's all-inclusive management platform complements Hyatt's global scale and brand strength, enabling us to deliver compelling experiences for guests and members while driving strong performance for owners." Hyatt's all-inclusive growth journey began in collaboration with Playa in 2013 with the launch of the Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara brands and accelerated with the transformative acquisition of Apple Leisure Group in 2021. In 2024, Hyatt further expanded its portfolio through a strategic joint venture with Grupo Piñero for Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts. The acquisition of Playa solidifies Hyatt's position as a leading provider of all-inclusive travel experiences. "Playa has spent nearly two decades building a reputation for delivering outstanding all-inclusive experiences," said Bruce Wardinski, departing Chairman & CEO, Playa Hotels & Resorts. "This acquisition is a natural evolution of our longstanding relationship with Hyatt, and we're confident these outstanding resorts will continue to flourish under its leadership." Solo traveller in Tenerife says her glass of wine 'disappeared' during dinner - after family at resort claimed they 'didn't want their children exposed to a woman drinking'

A woman enjoying an all-inclusive holiday in Tenerife claims her glass of wine was taken away from her after she was falsely accused of being underage by a fellow guest - all because she was drinking and dining alone. The solo traveller, who took to Reddit to share her story, said the incident unfolded at her resort while she was seated near a family of five - only for the mother to object to her drinking; seemingly purely on the grounds that she was a woman by herself. Posting in the popular Am I The A**hole forum, the woman explained that she'd chosen an all-inclusive resort 'to save having to look for places to eat by herself'. She described how the hotel operated club-style seating, meaning all meals were served at tables of eight in an effort to 'encourage a sense of community and conversation.' 'Last night, I was seated first and had a glass of wine,' the post continued. 'A family of five got seated at my table, two adults and three children. The mother turned to me and said "We do not wish to expose our children to women drinking alcohol." 'I smiled and said perhaps they should ask to move tables if it was an issue but I would be drinking the wine.' She claimed the family then made passive-aggressive remarks about her being on her own. But when she returned from helping herself to food, presumably from a buffet, she discovered her wine had vanished. 'A waiter came over and asked to see my wristband (for the all-inclusive) and said the family had told them I was underage and must have sneaked away from my parents. 'He was very apologetic and returned with a fresh glass of wine just as the family came back with their food. 'Am I the a**hole for then requesting the waiter bring me the full bottle along with a couple of shots of vodka? The family stormed out of the restaurant when I drank the shots as they arrived at the table!' The post has since gone viral, receiving more than 30,000 'likes' and thousands of comments. The story struck a nerve, with many commenters focusing on the bizarrely specific objection to women drinking, rather than alcohol itself. One person wrote: 'It's just WOMEN drinking alcohol. What the heck is that about? It's clearly not an issue with alcohol as much as it is with women. Sheesh.' Another added: 'I was just about to ask the same thing. Is it okay for us men to drink alcohol but not women? If that's the case I find it extremely sexist and not tolerable.' Others took issue with the hypocrisy of the mother's actions, pointing out the mixed message she was sending her children. 'I can't believe this situation. She doesn't want to expose her children to seeing someone drink alcohol, but she's willing to expose her children to her own lying!' one commenter said. Another agreed, writing: 'Lying or hypocrisy? Bet the husband drinks and maybe she does when the kids are in bed. 'Trying to control someone else is sheer arrogance. Get another table, lady, and eat blindfolded.' Many couldn't believe the unrealistic expectations the family appeared to have in a resort setting. 'What family goes to an all-inclusive in Tenerife and doesn't expect to see women drinking alcohol! They will have to blindfold the children.' And another joked: 'Isn't Tenerife basically about being drunk and British? They should have gone literally anywhere else.' Although some called the poster's response 'petty', others praised her boldness. 'You are an absolute legend for requesting the full bottle of wine and vodka shots. This level of pettiness is something we should all aspire to.' one supporter commented. Another wrote: 'Were you petty? Absolutely, and I am living for it. This was fantastic, and I would have done the same. 'I cannot stand parents who believe they can police other people because they want to shield their children unnecessarily from perfectly normal aspects of life.' The post has since sparked widespread debate on the etiquette of shared holiday spaces, with the overwhelming majority backing the solo traveller's right to enjoy her holiday on her own terms. Tenerife remains one of the UK's most popular destinations for solo travellers, couples and families alike, but even in an apparent sunny home-from-home for Brits, conflict can arise.
