Kean to miss Italy qualifers against Norway, Moldova
ITALY will be without Fiorentina striker Moise Kean for their two opening World Cup qualifying matches, away against Norway on Friday and at home against Moldova on Monday, the Italian football federation said.
Kean sustained a muscle strain in his right thigh during training on Wednesday, the federation said, adding that he had returned to his club for recovery.
The 25-year-old enjoyed the best season of his career in 2024-25 with Fiorentina, a club he joined last summer from Juventus, scoring 19 goals to finish second in the Serie A goal scorers' standings.
Italy coach Luciano Spalletti will also be without a pair of defenders, Alessandro Buongiorno missing the Norway match through injury while Francesco Acerbi, who was in the Inter Milan side that lost the Champions League final, declined a call-up.
Italy, who failed to qualify for the last two World Cups, face a tricky start against Erling Haaland's Norway on Friday before hosting Moldova three days later in Reggio Emilia.
Norway lead Group I after winning their two opening matches against Israel and Moldova in March.

Speedy Tigers bitten by underdogs Wales
KUALA LUMPUR: This is really embarrassing. The national men's hockey team lost to Wales in the Nations Cup at Bukit Jalil today. Yes, unfancied Wales, this is not a typo. World No. 17 Wales, playing for the first in the tournament, did not wilt in the scorching afternoon heat. It was Malaysia who melted instead at the National Hockey Stadium. The dogged Europeans came back from a goal down to stun world No. 12 Malaysia 2-1 to claim fifth placing. It's hard to swallow, and this must be Malaysia's worst ever defeat in hockey history. Coach Sarjit Singh's men paid the price for missing a number of chances and also conceding 11 penalty corners. It was Wales' first ever win over Malaysia in six meetings since the World Cup qualifier in Invercargill, New Zealand in 2009. Defender Syed Syafiq Syed Cholan gave Malaysia the lead off a penalty corner in the 20th minute. But in the 42nd minute, Wales equalised through Rhys Bradshaw, who sounded the board off their eighth penalty corner. Wales kept up the pressure and they scored through yet another penalty corner by Gareth Furlong in the 50th minute. The Speedy Tigers looked shaky in defence and tame upfront. Coach Sarjit was disappointed with his players' performance. "Today's game was not up to the mark. I think we were slow. We had the chance to kill the game, but we did not kill it. "We made mistakes in defence and they scored two penalty corner goals. "All the teams are more or less balanced in this tournament. Whoever takes the chance to win, will win the game. "I will resign from the job if Malaysia don't qualify for next year's World Cup," said Sarjit. Meanwhile world No. 19 Japan fought back from a goal down to upset world No. 13 South Africa 2-1 to avoid finishing last in the tournament. Calvin Davis gave South Africa the lead in the seventh minute, but Japan rallied with two goals through Ryosuke Shinohara (35th) and Kosei Kawabe (42nd).

MotoGP: Marquez claims 100th career pole with lap record in Italian GP qualifying
ROME, June 21 — Marc Marquez took the 100th pole of his career on his Ducati debut at the Mugello Circuit at their home Italian Grand Prix today in a qualifying session where the lap record was broken several times. It was Marquez's sixth pole of the season and the 72nd MotoGP pole of his career to go with his 14 poles in Moto2 and 14 more in the 125cc World Championship. 'I'm super happy because it was a real pole position, it was without (using) the slipstreams, alone and just trying to find my limits,' Marquez said. 'The pace was not bad but (I have to) be patient because in the afternoon with a warm temperature, it can change everything. But at the moment we are there and ready to fight for the sprint and main race.' Marquez initially took provisional pole when he slotted in behind his brother Alex and used the Gresini bike's slipstream to his advantage. As Alex crossed the line with the fastest time, Marc snatched top spot from him less than a second later with a lap record. Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo then broke the record but before he could celebrate, Marc's Italian team mate Francesco Bagnaia went even faster on his home track where he has won the last three Grands Prix. However, Marc had one more flying lap left in him and when the Spaniard crossed the line, he set a time of one minute and 44.169 seconds to pip Bagnaia to pole by 0.059 seconds. Alex will join them on the front row. 'I tried everything in qualifying, Marc was in super shape and it's tough to beat him. I wanted to start on the front row and this was the best result in qualifying (for me) this season,' Bagnaia said. Quartararo was only fourth fastest despite breaking the lap record and he will be joined on the second row by KTM's Maverick Vinales and VR46 Racing's Franco Morbidelli. — Reuters
